What's creepy about him?

Non the secretmaker, but probably because he's a sex positive character, and an enthusiastic one at that. These days that's 'creepy'.

Boy have times changed.

Well, he does tend to come onto characters without gauging whether they are interested or at all sex positive themselves. I personally chalk that up to him being used to a time when everyone was sex positive and not understanding modern social cues and don't find him creepy. But I get where the OP is coming from.

Lol! I didn't find him creepy exactly, but I can see why others do. Gun-training as an excuse to grope your new staff, snogging someone while they're unconscious. No matter how good looking my boss was I'd never want them thinking they were entitled to grope me because of that fact. I don't think that has anything to do with being a puritan.

Yes, in real life, such behavior would be unacceptable.

I can't figure out how that makes it unacceptable on TV.

Enjoying sex unapologetically and groping on everyone whether they want you to or not aren't really the same thing though.

I'm pretty sex-negative, but I still really enjoy Jack as a character.

I'm just tired of hearing about John Barrowman himself, though.

I haven't watched Torchwood but isn't it supposed to be absolutely riven through with consent issues?

Yeah. I suppose it is. But it's part of the boundary challenging 'more adult' storytelling. Frankly, it didn't always work.

I think it might have worked better if the consent issues had been intentional and not a by product of ill-thought out writing.

I can't remember if Captain Whatsisface was a rapist, but Burn Gorman's character was one. Torchwood was fucked up.

Owen used a pheromone enhancer in one episode. It made him irresistible to women. (And possible men. Whether he got in the taxi with the couple was vague.) But Owen didn't actually rape anyone, and Jack didn't either.

Worse a rapist they didn't even mean to make a rapist even though they have the woman in question make it clear all she wants to do is sit at the bar and wait for her boyfriend and isn't remotely interested in Owen and only has sex with him because he sprays something on himself that compels her to want it. At least if they tried for some ambiguity I'd understand their confusion at people's response to the scene, but both with her and later with the angry boyfriend they make it very clear they only want to have sex because the spray compels them to feel that not for any other reason.

So basically the fun stuff. No wonder people hate it now.

Torchwood hit most of the interesting H/C bingo card sweet spots. Executed them in frustrating ways, most of the time, but that made it a rich vein for fic opportunities.

Not OP but (rolling my eyes at the people above - maybe that is why the OP found him creepy, but this is a 'puritanical' decade? Lol... anyways...) I found him a bit creepy in his first appearances because he comes off as very smiley, almost too perfect, very 'constructed'.
I think it is very much a remnant of Barrowman's theatre acting that he does't shake when he's on camera - the way he talks, the way he holds himself, and the way he emotes feels like he is a cardboard cut-out* that has accidentally landed in the scene, and it can be a bit uncanny valley.

* Not saying his acting is bad, but just imagine a cardboard cut-out that runs through several poses like clunky stop-motion animation, with an unmoving mouth and permanent smile, occasional glower, occasional teary eyes, with a voice-box on the back that spits out lines.

If you compare people's attitudes from even five years ago, in the main they are much more vanilla and uptight. It's been interesting, if somewhat disheartening, to watch, especially all the policing in fandom circles.

He was a con man, wasn't he? Being somewhat less-than-genuine would seem normal.

He was, yes. Amongst other things.

Jack was actually a really interesting character who was often given short shrift by both the fans and the show.

Dude. Every time I turn around, someone is talking about how morally wrong a TV show is. Yes, I do feel like I'm living in Salem.

I love him so bear that in mind.

That said...he looks kinda plastic. Like, he's VERY made up in DW. They caked the makeup on. Add that to the fact he already looks like a doll IRL. It took me a while to warm to him partially because of that.
