Unrelated to your autistic interpretation, but am I the only one who hated him? He was so incredibly annoying. I stopped playing I got so sick of him constantly popping up to interrupt my game play.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Hated him too. He was annoying and felt really hamfisted. Then again, I hated a lot of BW because it tried to have a plot and it fell flat + shitty pokemon.

BW2 were significantly better and N wasn't nearly as annoying.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayrt I'll take your word for it! I never got bw2 because I just did not want to deal with more N flipping all over the place. Dude wouldn't let up or let it go, borderline creepy stalker IMO. At least in older games team rocket only tried to recruit you once or twice. N was relentless in heckling you.

I just realised hah! He was like the animal rights activists you find on the street corner who follow you while you're just trying to do your thing. I might agree but dear lord you're annoying, fuck off!

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
DA. Considering that Plasma is based on PETA, that's probably what he's intended to be.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
N thankfully fucks off at the end of BW and only shows up at the VERYYYYY end of BW2 to give you the other dragon because PLOT and is not an annoying special snowflake twat anymore.

TBH, Cheron bothered me too in BW because they tried to make him Blue/Silver-lite minus the dickish qualities that made them endearing by giving THOSE qualities to N with an annoying soapbox to stand on thus giving us two annoying rivals and forgettable Bianca.

BW2 improved A LOT of my grievances with BW and tbh if I ever have to replay the fifth generation again I would much rather skip right to BW2 because there's barely anything salvageable from the original. BW for me is up there with D&P for being straight up unenjoyable. Platinum still good tho.

I totally felt the same about BW (though I did like a lot of the pokes, including my fave starter), the attempts at a plot fell sooo flat for me. Your comment makes me wonder if I should give BW2 a shot.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Do it!!! I was grinding my teeth at the thought of having to play BW2 when it initially came out but played it years later and it is soooooo much better. It's the Platinum o B&W's D&P.

They gave up on trying to plot deep and serious and just went HERE STANDARD STORY, had better pokemon distribution in addition to previous gens, and was challenging but not mindnumbingly so like BW and if it was too easy there were plenty of post game challenges and has honestly the best post game campaigns. Also i felt Unova was much better fleshed out in BW2.

BW was just a chore to get through and is probably the only pokemon games i will never replay (along with D&P), but I would happily play BW2 from scratch again :)

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
No, my brother gave up on White Version at Nacrene City because of "the stupid green-haired guy" and asked if I'd swap him one of my games for it.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayrt

Oh thank god. Must be the circles I run in

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
He is one of the reasons I dislike Gen 5 in general.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I was ok with him in the games, but his fanbase is deranged.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-04-27 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
But he's not autistic? His dad was just an asshole and isolated him from most people.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you miss the word "think" in OPs secret? They're allowed to have an interpretation and share it without word of gods definite yay or nay on how canon it is.

Welcome to fandom. Not everything people talk or think about gas to be written in stone canon.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-04-27 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Why are you taking what I said personally?

I don't ascribe to headcanons because I just take canon at face value and don't feel the need to project on to or diagnose fictional characters.

Chill, dude.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
unless you don't write or produce anything for fandom it's impossible for you not to have headcanons since we don't see every aspect of a character's life

How come everytime someone disagrees with you and points out your intentionally blind reading, you act like they must be taking it personally and get all condescending?

Perhaps you need to learn to comprehend better. Words mean things. Headcanon or interpretation, people are going to do it whether you "ascribe" to it or not - but acting like their interpretations where they literally use the word think (a common indicator of personal opinion) is a statement of fact so you have a straw man to be whiny about will be pointed out.

You going for the personal/chill man rebuttal because you can't handle disagreement in 3...2...1

Fandoms are always headcanoning sheltered characters as autistic. One of my other fandoms does it too. I mean yeah, they could be autistic in addition to the shelteredness, but it's like people ignore that there's a canon reason the character doesn't know how to interact with people, and it's not autism.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-04-27 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I find that part of fandom special and wish the term headcanon would go away because all it is is fan speculation, even if it involves ignoring canon explanations for a character's personality.

I mean that doesn't mean he's not autistic, but yeah, I think severe isolation from humans is more likely to be the reason for his awkwardness and lack of social skills here.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-04-27 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I haven't played BW all the way through, but I do know N's backstory, so when people say he's autistic, I'm just like, did you even pay attention to what Ghetsis did to him?

I wouldn't really call it representation since it isn't canon. It would be interesting to find out if his autistic-like traits are due to actual autism or if they're learned behaviors, or a mix of both.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, having read the first few comments....am I the only one who loved N? He was the first real attempt to have a character with some depth, and I thought they did a good job.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
No, I loved him too. By the end of the game, I just wanted to see him get out of Plasma and go do whatever he wanted. I was so happy that he seems so chilled in BW2, like you just know that he's getting on a lot better.

I mean, I get where everyone is coming from that he's annoying, but he's no worse than a standard rival who pops up right after a challenging route or cave to battle you, other than that he has some speech prepared for you to listen to. That you can skip. He talks so fast, he's pretty easy to ignore.

Personally, I absolutely despise the headcanon that he's autistic. I can see where people are coming from with it, but autistic headcanons ALWAYS feel like people are doing them SOLELY for brownie points because they're easy. Just find a character who has poor social skills and is awkward and bam! Instant autism brownie points for you. My younger brother is autistic and there's so much more to him than just "isn't good socially". It just doesn't sit right with me when people do it and it's always so obvious that they've never met someone with it and don't know what they're talking about.
