So I finally watched blazing saddles. My review, in a word: UGH.

Fuck no.

I hear people say things like "This film was so great but it couldn't be made today" and if this is an example of such a film, I have to say, FUCKING GOOD.

I don't even have the words for what this film was. Gross just doesn't cover it. It shouldn't have even been made back then! Was there really a time when we were this fucking backwards?

/Rant.

What about you all. "Films that couldn't be made today" and your opinions on that?

If so... a 1970's movie about a black man set (set up really) to become the sheriff in a town where the powers that be want him to fail. The town is about as racist as you'd expect... Fortionately, they are all very stupid

I remember watching it before I knew what being triggered was. I remember the sweating, the palpitations, the feeling of vomit rising. The feeling faint and giddy, so I totally agree.

Obviously, if it triggers you, you oughtn't watch it. The question to me is whether enjoying it makes you a bad person or whether anyone should watch it.

Huh. My best friend growing up recommended that movie to me when we were in...high school? ish?

I think maybe it has issues with race? I never got around to watching it and don't know much about it. I feel like I should watch it because it's one of those films everyone and their mother has seen, but I'm really bad about watching movies.

(In my friend's defense, a lot of social stuff sailed over my head when I was younger and probably did for her too)

The Super Mario Brothers Movie. It literally can't be made it's basically the reason Nintendo won't license their franchises for anyone to go all free for all terrible on it. Well. Wait. Technically if it was made now there'd be no reason all those years ago for it to not exist but—

Also, Nintendo, and even the Mario name, just don't have that same hype for kids as it did at the time when merch and shows (and shows inspired by) based on their properties were produced so easily outside of Japan. Anime and shorts are one thing, but an American live action adaptation, and allowed to be loose on interpretation, just wouldn't work because no one wants that or cares enough anymore to want it. i'd love another tmnt style mario movie though. or even a serious metroid one. base it on prime!

Now a metroid movie, that SHOULD be made. As long as the idiots who did Other M are stuffed in a closet somewhere when it's time to put people in charge of it.

The Super Mario Brothers movie is a great movie. I love watching it because it's just so random.

But yeah, I understand that it definitely would not be made at all today, at least not where it's so loosely based and not at all the plot of the games.

Song of the South couldn't be made today and in fact you can't even get it in the US.

It's a Disney film that was criticized even at the time of its release but the music is still really popular and Splash Mountain was based on it.

Heathers. At least not in the exact form it is, post Columbine. The scene where JD pulls a gun out at school and then barely gets in trouble because it isn't loaded is so weird today. Even the musical changed that scene to a fistfight.

oh yeah, when I watched that for the first time i was trying to figure out if no one caring about him pulling a gun out at school was a hollywood is unrealistic thing or a pre-columbine people actually wouldn't care thing

I've seen most of it in bits and pieces. I can't sit through it. I like the idea of it, some of the parts are intensely funny, but the rape jokes are so disgusting to me, I just can't watch it.

I love that it has a black hero in a historical, that racists are the bad guys, and to be honest, I kind of love the scene where the theater guy yells, "You beast you beast you beast!" and then gets a hug, because it's so over the top and weird.

But overall, the movie is not something i hope to try to watch. Some things just aren't worth it, Ya know?

Not that it couldn't be made, but I really feel like Aladdin wouldn't have been made if they had the idea for it after 9/11. So I guess I'm glad it was made when it was.

Black male chiming in. Can't really speak on how the movie treats women or Native Americans since it's been a bit since I watched it but I've enjoyed the hell out of Blazing Saddles. Mel Brooks is one of my comedy heroes and Blazing Saddles is just one of many reasons why. I love how he ridiculed racists and sent up western tropes. I wish Clevon Little had gotten to be in more high profile films. It's great he got this one film to shine in but he should have been in more.

I feel like it couldn't be made today not because of the subject matter but because of the ending. WHAT THE SHIT WAS THAT? They leave the Old West and tumble out into a movie lot?

Anyway, I feel like a series that couldn't be made today is The Six Million Dollar Man. Nowadays that's a painfully common fee for advanced medical bills, and you sure won't come out of any of it a superhero. He'd have to be at least the six BILLION dollar man.
