Threads like this always make me feel rather accomplished for managing to get this heavy without really ever drinking soda.

Same.

And then I wonder if people are trying to eat healthier so they can eat more because they're hungry all the time.

When you start eating healthier you generally tend to eat a lot less, actually.

This happens for a few reasons:

1. Eating more complex carbs and less processed sugars means your blood sugar is more even and you don't suffer the crashes which lead to sugar cravings (usually translated as being hungry by your brain).

2. Eating better usually means a better intake of micronutrients. When you have a lot of deficiencies happening you tend to be less satiated and prone to specific cravings which cause people to overeat.

That's nice.

I spent a year eating 1500 calories a day of lean protein, whole grains, vegetables, and very limited sugar.

I lived in a near constant state of hunger, cold, and constipation.

1500 calories a day is pretty low, you probably needed much more than that if you were constantly hungry.

Oh my. One whole year in decades without stuffing yourself full of empty calories and processed shit?

You're so brave.

Don't be such a fuckhead, so have no idea what their diet's been "for decades."

lol Go whine elsewhere. I'mma reply to a smarmy comment with snark if I feel like it.

don't do that sort of diet. it's stupid. try eliminating (or at least reducing to a pont where it's only a rare exception) stuff like sodas, reduce portions of sweets (smaller slices of cake) first. Have a look at where else you might be eating unneccessary amounts of fat or sugar on a regular basis, like eating a lot of deep fried stuff or processed meats, fruit or vegetables with added sugar and try substituting these with regular fried and unprocessed stuff. Try eating only stuff that tastes good and not force yourself to eat steamed vegetables because "they're healthy" if you don't like them. Pan-fried with olive oil is completely healthy.
Then, start doing something in the way of exercise. It will help with the cold and constipation-thing. Just walking is a great start. maybe cycling because your radius is bigger.
Once you've found a diet you can live with you can try and reduce a bit of calory intake in a way that is compatible with your lifestyle. Like, I could never not eat after 6 in the evening, so I'm never even trying that "foolproof" method of losing weight. Instead, because I used to have uni at 10, I would not eat breakfast but drink coffee and water in the morning, and get right to lunch after class. one meal less with a bit of hunger in the morning, but I had lunch to look forward to. Lost 10 kilos in a year without ever feeling like I was on a reduced diet.

You're right, that sort of diet is stupid and unsustainable. Now I'm trying to take steps like those you mention here, and it's working better.

People like Herpy love to preach their One True Way, but one type of diet doesn't work the same way for everyone. I've found that a diet proportionally high in fats keeps me feeling fuller and keeps my bowels moving, even when I eat less.

Yep. I eat a lot less now that I'm not eating much junk food because what I eat actually fills me up and keeps me full longer so I don't feel that constant urge to snack.

I'm the anon who mostly gave up soda. I am still definitely overweight, though not obese. But I feel like I'm probably healthier for not drinking it because it has so much sugar. The benefits aren't just related to weight.

Re: eating healthier

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure it has many benefits besides weight. I've just never drank it because I don't like the taste much, so I built my weight up other ways (burritos mostly).

If you drink a lot of fruit juice, it's the same as soda calorie wise. People think it's healthier though :(

Re: eating healthier

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I primarily drink water and coffee or tea (usually black, maybe with a splash of milk). This has pretty much been the case for, like, a decade or more

I just eat a lot of fatty food because I'm awful

Re: eating healthier

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I know, that was more of a general PSA

So many people encourage others to drink juice because it's "healthy" and all that processed fruit flavored sugar water might as well be a coke

Re: eating healthier

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
we~ll it *should* be unprocessed juice. then it had vitamins, flavonoids and it might even have some fiber left.
I think though that we should look at it this way: nature has given us 100 varieties of 100% fruit soda. why would you spend your money on an inferior synthesized product like coke? Of course It's easier to produce and costs less money to make so it's a great win for the companies selling it. It's also engineered so you can drink more of it at once than you would juice while still having the same amount of sugar, so even though they can easily afford to make it cheaper than juice if you look at the price/litre, you will pay more in the end. A bottle of coke for me lasts one day, the same amount of juice lasts at least 3, and costs only double.

LOL, ditto. It's frustrating because that's often the first piece of advice to people who are trying to diet. Well, I can't give up soda because I don't drink it. Next!
