eating healthier

What are some small things you do to eat healthier without feeling g gou're completely overhauling your diet in one go?

Keep unhealthy foods out of sight. Out of sight often is out of mind, and there are many times you probably wouldn't have reached for something unhealthy if you never saw it in the first place.

--Yogurt with granola
--Strawberries with some sugar sprinkled over them
--Peanut butter
--Chocolate chip chewy bars
--Salads with lots of croutons and hard boiled eggs and cheese on top
--100 calorie snack packs
--All kinds of juices

Because even though those snacks aren't "perfect," it's better than grabbing a candy bar or a soda or pop tart or something of that nature.

actually it's best to avoid juices as they don't have much fiber to slow down the absorbtion of sugar (ie don't drink your calories)

water's your best bet basically

Having raw veggies on hand. I just like to eat them that way, and I go "Oh shit, don't want those to spoil" and eat a handful of green beans

Re: eating healthier

drink only water or tea

I was just scrolling quickly past and my first thought was "OMG LIQUID DIETS ARE TERRIBLE ADVICE!!" but then I realized you probably meant as opposed to juice, soda, etc. XD

Carbs are an issue for me, but I also eat out a lot (a lot of fast food and fast-casual).

At Chipotle I transitioned to burrito bowls instead of burritos and then transitioned to a bowl with half the rice and added fajitas veggies. I probably won't go no rice, because I like rice, but that'd be the next step if I want/need to.

At Pie Five, I only eat tbe thin whole-grain crust, and I make a poi t to get the farmer's market (veggie) pizza periodically.

At Panda Express, I went from chow mein as my side to half-fried/half-white rice, and as I type this, I'm trying half-fried rice/half-steamed veggies, and I think it's a keeper.

I also started taking g fresh veggies with hummus and maybe some pretzels to work for a snack instead of hitting up the vending machine for chips.

Gave up soda for the most part. I just get water if it's possible. In some places, it's cheaper too.

Replacing snack foods with healthier ones. Veggies for crunchy, fruits for sweets. Stuff like that.

Slowly stop buying things that you want to cut out of your diet*.

For me, I stopped eating at fast food chains entirely. Then I stopped drinking soda. Then I stopped drinking bottled/mixed drinks and fruit juices that weren't actually fruit. Then I stopped eating chips (and snack crackers).

Then I told myself if I wanted a dessert, it had to be something I made myself.

I also slowly cut out meat from my diet. I stopped eating pork chops, then steak, then sausage, then fatty cuts of meat. When I stopped eating meat entirely I was only eating lean meats.

Currently working on kicking the candy habit, which is going rather splendidly actually.

*I still allow myself to buy some of these things on a once in a blue moon basis, or I'll indulge at parties (e.g. chips and soda). I'll never eat a fast food burger again if I can help it though.

Threads like this always make me feel rather accomplished for managing to get this heavy without really ever drinking soda.

-eat a good filling breakfast low on carbs, I reccommend fruits, eggs, and nuts; it sets you for the rest of the day so you don't stuff yourself later
-switch to drinking water, I like having ice in mine so I have something to chew on
-gum's a good option too

Drinking tea instead of soda
not buying junk food
reaching for carrots/celery instead of chocolate or chips.
Add more vegetables or "colors" into my meals. When I'm in a healthy mood, I try to keep to the five color minimum and that helps a lot.

Re: eating healthier

I am definitely NOT a healthy person, so every teensy difference I can make in my diet I am pretty proud of.

- drink more water: this is an obvious one, except I rarely had the willpower to replace my drink of choice by plain boring water. So instead when I'm at home, I try to get my usual drink (soda, ashamed to say) and then get a waaaaaaaaay bigger glass full of water at the same time. Then I let my laziness do the job for me. I mean, I could get up and refill my (almost) empty soda, or I could simply drink this huge glass of water that's right there.

- when getting a snack, stop and ask yourself this question: am I snacking because I'm actually hungry or because I'm bored and need a distraction? If you're actually hungry, eat something filling like a sandwich or something, instead of a cookie. If you're bored, go find another distraction. I'm amazed how often I'm looking through my fridge when I'm not really hungry, I just felt like a walk around the house and that's where I wound up.

I don't buy snack foods (or have just one thing of junk food on hand at a time, but something okay like crackers) because I don't trust myself to portion it out.

I also slowly upgraded my sandwiches over a year (replaced white bread with whole grain, mayo with hummus, added lettuce, then bell peppers, then subtracted the ham). I liked doing it this way because it wasn't a whole new thing at once and it gave me time to experiment while having a solid base.

Eat fruit daily - I love fruit.

Buy snackable veggies. Pack them for lunch because then I know I will eat them.

I avoid soda except for a once-a-week-or-less diet Pepsi. (Yeah I know diet is still shit for you, but I like the taste better and it's still a once-in-a-while drink, not daily.)

I buy single serving cups of ice cream so I don't wind up eating three servings at once.

I focus on eating really healthy for lunch and splurging a little more for dinner, because I know if I try to do it the other way around I will not be motivated to eat healthy for dinner.

Cut back on soda, or completely eliminate it.

Integrate vegetables and fruits into your diet. Add some vegetables to dinner, eat a fruit salad for lunch.

Try to avoid take out/processed/pre-made food as much as you can. Home-made means you can control the amount of fat or salt going into your food.

Drink as much water as needed (Different bodies/lifestyles need different amounts.) or tea if you like some flavor.

Try to eat more protein and fiber, as opposed to carbs.

Cut back on portion size.

The key is to change things one step at a time.

My first step was to make sure I ate breakfast every day, because I was really bad about it. I ate whatever I wanted for breakfast, the important part was that I ate something.

After that was a habit, I started changing what I ate for breakfast. I went from sausage biscuits and sugary cereal every morning to low-fat omelets with veggies, granola and fruit, etc.

After that was a habit, I started adding veggies to my lunch. I ate whatever I wanted - hot dogs, hamburgers, potato chips - but I always ate a salad with it. Spinach, broccoli, bell peppers, and tomatoes, with vinaigrette dressing. After making a salad to go with lunch was second nature, I started in on my entrees - lean proteins, whole grains, and fruit to go with my salad. Etc, etc, etc.

Just pick one thing at a time to change, keep doing it until it becomes a habit, and then move on to the next.

This is the same system I used to get started on an exercise routine.

Don't buy Reese's peanut butter cups. Not even "for a friend, or for later, or to eat slowly and keep in the freezer." Just don't buy candy or chocolate at all, and you'll be less likely to eat it.

I read some good advice from someone who lost a lot of weight. He ate very healthy, but he didn't tell himself he couldn't have a treat. He could have any treat he wanted--he just had to want it badly enough to get up, drive out, and buy ONE and eat it. Not keep it on hand at all. I thought that was very sensible, and might help a lot.

Slowly increasing the ratio of vegetables to meat/starch in meals and adding vegetables to sauces/dishes that don't call for them. Spinach is my go-to veggie for that (mostly because I can't stand spinach on its own).

Replacing soda with water has been a good switch for me, despite my work always having soda in the fridge. It's a huge temptation to grab one when that 2 o'clock slump hits.

1) Take responsibilty for your thoughts and actions. For me a big change in thinking was when instead of saying to myself "I need to eat this", I said "I want to eat this". In other words, I questioned the cravings instead of mindlessly going along with them. Also, I'd advice getting familiar with mindfulness, meditation or any other thinking technique that helps you to face your feelings instead of trying to eat them away. For an emotional eater such as myself, being able understand why I ate, or why I had to numb my feelings, was a real life changer.

2) Replace bad habits with good habits one habit at a time, like for example, switch sweets to fruits. It's actually the small things and changes you do, not the big ones where you cut out everything, that will last a lifetime. Changing habits is an extremely slow process, as it should be, because it's based on endless repetition. You're re-programming your brains and to strengthen those new neural pathways, it's going to take a while before a new habit becomes a routine that you don't even have to think about. But, when those good habits become a routine, your life will get a whole lot easier.

If you find healthy takeaway food, cling to it. I am very fond of Vietnamese ricepaper rolls, especially if they have decent amount of salad vegetables in them, and no Japanese mayo. (I still feel sad that the sushi place in the mall where my supermarket is changed hands and the new people ha terrible ricepaper rolls. I'm just glad a better place opened up at the Hyperdome.)
