Changes in adaptations that you like

90% of How to Train Your Dragon. The books aren't bad, they're just really different. Arguably, the movie takes a more conventional and standard story.

In LOTR-

Making Arwen actually have a role. She was awesome in Fellowship. It got a little obnoxious in Return of the King but overall I think her inclusion was really positive.

Most of the pacing stuff. Basically everything they did cut, I respected.

I think the Hunger Games movies did an excellent job taking advantage of not being trapped in Katniss's head the whole time to show off the world. I liked most of the parts from other POVs that were added. Especially the parts showing the people working behind the scenes on the Games. The way they were just casually doing their job as if it was any other mundane job was really effective for me.

This! I really loved that we were able to explore a bit more of what wasn't said in the books.

The Hunger Games movies are some of my favorite adaptations. I still haven't seen Mockingjay - I'm resentful of them making it two freaking movies - but I have great hopes that getting out of her head will make everything more bearable and interesting

Same, I tried to read through the Hunger Games books and couldn't even get anywhere with Catching Fire. I liked the movies a TON though!

I'll say this EVERY time. The changes to the My Sister's Keeper movie completely fixed that shitty, insufferable ending from the book.

Also, I liked that in The Watchmen, they changed the big attack to bombs instead of...space squids.

I thought having Mary die with the rest of the sisters instead of lingering for a month in the movie verison of Virgin Suicides was a good choice. It wasn't my favorite part of the book (although I understand the bookend nature of it), and I think it would have been hard to translate to the screen.

Pretty much every change in Stardust.

Yes, seconding this one. Didn't love all the movie visuals but it'd be hard to put Charles Vess' artwork onscreen.

I hate the Hobbit movies but I liked Bard's kids (wish Tilda and Sigrid had more to do than scream in terror).

I actually liked all the characterization changes in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice movie.

I was coming here to say that. So much agreement.

A Little Princess. Emphasizing Sara's kindness and creativity instead of her superiority. Making Becky black and then adopting her as a sister. I could be remembering wrong but I think in the book Becky becomes Sara's servant? Ugh. Not a perfect movie but so gorgeous and distinct from the source material...

Seconding this. Particularly the sister vs servant, and emphasizing her kindness. The original book is so classist, I had a hard time with it after having seen this version of the movie.

I like most of those changes you mentioned. However, I still wish Sara's intelligence had come across. A huge part of her character is that she's the smart girl. Also, I hated the changed ending (except for the removal of Becky becoming Sara's servant, though at the time the book was written that was actually a good ending for Becky). I didn't like that the father was still alive and all the added scenes with him. And I thought the change of settings to New York and a later time period was stupid.

Re: Changes in adaptations that you like

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I hated those changes. They were too cutesy and anachronistic. A white girl who grew up in India wouldn't have Sara's wide-eyed color- and class-blindness (the scene where Lottie tells her they can't talk to Becky because she's a servant and black, and Sara goes "Soooo?" nearly made my eyes rollout of my head. It doesn't make her look ahead of her time, it makes her look stupid. I understood this when I was ten). And her father being alive was just another tired example of having to change things because the original wasn't "happy" enough. That's right, all you kids whose parents died, nobody who adopts and loves you will ever be as good as your bio parents. The movie sayeth so.

Sorry I'm bitter because I used to love that movie and then I read the book and it was so much better.
