Travelling to Seattle

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll be in the downtown Seattle area for a few days. Does anyone local, or anyone familiar with the area, have suggestions for things to? Thanks!

Don't touch hipsters, you'll get infected.

Former Seattle-it's here
Ballard Locks and the Fremont Troll are both good

Lunchbox Laboratory is the best burger in Washington state according to food network (and myself). Apparently it hasn't been the same since they franchised, but I've been told it's still good.

As someone who has been craving it for a year, Dick's burgers are a must.
Also get some seafood at Chinnook's or little Chinnook's.

I remember the Pacific Science Center being fun even as an adult, but you'll just want to go and walk around Seattle Center a bit. Like Place Market, too, but you might already know it.

If you're in to music or sci fi, the EMP and Sci Fi museums next to the Space Needle are really enjoyable.

I always love doing the tourist thing and loved the Space Needle if you have no fear of heights.

If you have the time, a round trip ferry ride is $8. Just make sure to bring a warm jacket, no matter the temperature on land. I went on one; didn't actually explore the city that I went to (...I just wanted to ride the ferry), and I saw two seals! (Or the same seal twice idk).

I personally don't like the aquarium in Seattle, but I may be biased because my local aquarium is really cool! And I feel like Seattle's isn't. |D

I like wandering Pike Street Market; the fruit places sell some really good muscat (?) grapes. (Tiny wine grapes? IDK if they're in season).

Seconding the EMP/Sci-Fi museum. They've added a fantasy section that was neat! And you can ride the monorail from westlake center to it, which is always fun IMO. |D

Personally, I found the Space Needle overrated unless you can spend some time at the restaurant, though the playground below it is really cool.

Go to the Space Needle area and play with ALL OF THE FREE THINGS! There are giant singing flowers near the front of the Chihuly museum/gallery, more musical things at the playground behind the EMP, and usually a lot of fun buskers in the area plus weekend concerts/events starting up at the mini outdoor amphitheatre behind Chihuly. That's just what I've found so far.

Experience Music Project is TONS of fun, even if you're not a huge music nerd like me. You can view their exhibits, and make music of your own at the stations on the second floor. Leave lots of time for that, tho, and STICK TO YOUR LINE. It's suuuper popular, and takes some time to get on an instrument. There are also booths up the stairs - one each of bass, drums, vocals, and guitar - so don't be afraid to venture upwards!

Their new Sci-Fi/Fantasy area is... less fun to me than their previous version, but still pretty interesting. A bunch of movie/show artifacts, doc-loops, and a couple buttons to push.

Chihuly museum rocks. This time of year, don't both with the day/night pass -- it stays light too late to really be worth it, as the garden doesn't light up the same way in the twilight, and they close before sunset. Their glass blowing demos are fun, too!

Seriously consider their combo-pack ticket offer, if you think you want to do more than one thing in a day. It'll save you a few bucks. Individually, the EMP and Chihuly tickets are good for in-and-outs, but I haven't done the combo pack yet.

The Chihuly restaurant is tastyyyy, if a bit on the pricey side.

There's a public market-type-thing there, too, that's fun to explore.

If you're driving, the parking lot right there by the EMP, off 5th, is the cheapest I've found so far. I parked a couple blocks away in a parkade, then wished I'd parked at the lot because it was a few bucks cheaper and you could park for, like, 10hrs, or something ridiculous. Otherwise, the parkade at Mercer and 4th is where I went that's the second cheapest.

Outside the Space Needle area, there are a lot of restaurants, coffee shops, and comedy clubs, and the buskers are starting to come out of the woodwork since the weather's been so nice. So come with some spare change and time to wander!

What types of things do you like to do? Indoor or outdoor activities? What types of food do you like?

Pike Place Market (http://pikeplacemarket.org/) is pretty much always my go to rec. There's lots of fun stuff to look at/buy and there's a ridiculous amount of awesome food!

I'd also recommend the EMP/Sci-Fi museum (http://www.empmuseum.org/). Playing w/the instruments is super fun and the fantasy, sci-fi and horror exhibits are all pretty great.

The Seattle Underground Tour is fun if you want to walk around Pioneer Square and learn some old timey Seattle history.

If you like books, head up to Capitol Hill and check out The Elliott Bay Book Company (http://www.elliottbaybook.com/). Also, there's a lot of great food and drinks around that area.

If you like going to the movies, check out what's playing at the Cinerama (https://www.cinerama.com/) (500+ seats, 1 huge screen with super new comfy seats, cool concessions, and real movie/TV costumes on display in the lobby).

If you like sports try to catch a Mariners game or a Sounders FC or Reign FC match.

If you like board games, I'd suggest checking out Card Kingdom/Cafe Mox (http://www.moxboardinghouse.com/ballard/).

If you have time for a day trip and like the outdoors I highly recommend Mt. Rainier or the Olympic National Park.

I'm going to tell you this now so that you're not shocked: we have an incredibly huge homeless population here, many with profound mental illnesses. You'll run into tons of them, and you might see/hear some scary things. You'll likely be asked (some more politely than others) for change. Your choice on whether to give it or not.

That said, Seattle is actually a rather safe city, crime-wise. The majority is property crime (so, don't leave a bike unattended, basically), and only a few spots are what I'd call too sketchy to be around at night. (The junction of 3rd and Pike where the McDonalds is should probably be avoided, for instance.)

As for stuff to do that hasn't been mentioned already, the International District is small but fun to poke around (if you're into retro gaming, stop into Pink Gorilla, they're super awesome people-- and there's a karaoke bar in the same building), and there's a two-story toy store in Pioneer Square that I'm quite fond of. If you're going to be around on Sunday, definitely get up over the canal to Fremont to go to the Sunday Market. It's food and trinkets and music and all kinds of awesomeness crammed into a couple of blocks. Gas Works Park is amazing, too, if the weather holds.
