Guys, can we all dial down the loving descriptions of weaponry and brutal wounds please. It is getting creepy at times the way so many nerds are just so into military power fantasies and revenge-torture stories. It'd just be supergreat if you could dial down the amount of revenge-rape stories too, that gets thrown around too.

I'll give that a plus one.

+1

The amount of firearms fetishism is way creepy right now.

What is the current obsession over guns, and describing them in such almost sexual detail anyway?

Re: Peeves about nerds, geeks, and our own ilk

I know that some love the power that comes with owning and using one. Power certainly has a sex appeal to it for some people. And guns do have a rather phallic look to them, though, so I suppose it's not that surprising they'd take on a sexual allure as a result of that, too.

If the fetishing were just relegated to fiction, it'd be creepy, but okay, it's fiction. But given real life tragic events of late, the gun obsession has gone well beyond creepy into downright frightening.

Probably a paranoid manifestation of the "Obama/the government gonna take my guns!!!!!" mindset.

Current? That's always been a thing, at least for my lifetime. Back in the early 90s, there were entire comic books that were just pictures of the Punisher's guns and his personal reviews of them. Not kidding.

What I was baffled about, was here in Belgium (okay, so for the record, this was after the airport got blown up by terrorists and the country is like in stage 3 or stage 4 lockdown or whatever that means anymore), there's still people parading around cons with realistic-looking weapons, going there on public transport and whatnot Honestly t hat point I'd be worried i'd be shot by the cops. scratch that, shot by the army

It is the fetishizing of the Marine Corp that worries me right now. You'd think they were a legion of perfect supermen the way some people keep lauding them and venerating them. Sorry guys, but they are just people like you and me, and no better or worse at being soldiers than anyone else.

Blame NCIS for that one.

Don't the Marines in particular have a fairly toxic military culture going on?
