It was the perfect level of pain for what I want in a Marvel movie.

Ha. I would have been happy with ratcheting the angst up in the middle third, and then kind of slowing it down in preparation for the end. I liked the climax, and I liked how the evil plot did end up working, and Tony couldn't even see it.
For me, the only truly 유A유 moment was when Zemo started reprogramming Bucky, and Bucky was struggling to get out. Other than that, I didn't find anything super angsty.

I loved this moment too. It was really well-acted and I can't imagine how horrific that would be -_-

I was like yesssssssss this is what I'm here for. I could've used a few more moments like that.

Bucky's story is just so fucking awful, man. If anything they downplay it, severely. He's basically been tortured since the Second World War and not just physically, but with the loss of control and the loss of memory I kind of wonder what he lives for now. I think he needs more screen time, and Cap and Tony need less.

Like I said to kaijinscendre above I guess my desire for narrative fulfilment in terms of the death thing could just as easily been satisfied with one of them believing one of them had been killed, rather than it actually having happened. You have to admit that would have been damned intense (and not overly grimdark).

Me too. I'm utterly done with grimdark. It's everywhere now. It was downright refreshing to see a film that played on the character's emotional vulnerabilities and deep attachments to each other without throwing in a major character death or sexual violence every few seconds for cheap drama.

Exactly. And it ended the film with an intimate fight between the three instead of "Oh no, now we have to join together to fight this [insert group of villains or one giant villain]."

I must chime in to add that I am also delighted they didn't go that well-worn route either >>

to clarify: I am 100% with you. I didn't want more grimdark, and certainly not character death or sexual violence.
More moments like Bucky's realization he was going to be reprogrammed, though. Or like, idk, what if when Cap and Bucky went off, Cap thought Rhodey had died, but had to leave anyway? Stuff like that. Pain. Happy pain.

I thought Tony's reaction to his parents' death was fantastically acted (as well as Tony's reaction to Rhodey being hurt). The scenes with T'Challa reacting to his father's death were also fantastic.

Somehow the movie made me sympathize with Zemo for a bit. His speech to T'Challa and almost suicide was wonderfully portrayed. I especially love that T'Challa was able to let go of his pursuit of revenge ("the living are not done with you yet" line was bomb).

Oh, there were lots of great moments, and basically 100% of T'Challa's moments were amazing. And yeah, I thought the ending with Zemo was especially well done.

The thing is, T'Challa reacting to his father's death didn't qualify as angst for me, because there was nothing unexpected or exceptional about it. Good angst should hurt. I'm not saying it wasn't emotional or touching, but for me, it wasn't angsty.

AYRT I agree with you too. I thought they handled the sad scenes so well. There were gut-punch moments and they were a lot more original and unexpected because they weren't going for a massacre.

YES YES YES.
