Captain America: Civil War

It has been out for a while every where. What are everyone's thoughts?

I didn't think they could top Winter Soldier, but they did. I also didn't know if that many characters in a movie would work out, but The Russos know what they are doing (can't wait to see Avengers 3 now).

I loved 99% of this movie.

Antman & Spiderman: I loved the comedy these two brought. All of the Giantman scenes were hilarious, my whole theater was cracking up. As an introduction to Spiderman, this was great. I love how he actually acts, looks, and sounds like a teenager. I can't wait to see more of him.

I never felt any of the characters were underused even smaller parts like Clint.

All the relationships between the characters was fantastic.

Bucky and Steve: Perfect portrayal of an intimate friendship. Regardless of what happened, Steve was always there on Bucky's side.

Bucky and Sam: Very fun bantering between them (the seat scene and 'I hate you' scene). It is basically what happens when your best friend from high school meets your best friend from college. Awkward and a bit of a rivalry.

Steve and Tony: I was amazed by how well this was done. This is how a breakdown between heroes should be. They each had their own (logical) reasons for choosing their sides. And the movie made you feel for each character, their motivations, and their relationships.

Plot stuff

I loved the introduction to T'Challa and his motivations. In true Marvel fashion, I was in love with him by the end of the movie. I am so glad he was able to let go of his anger and take Zemo in alive.

Helmut Zemo is probably my second favorite villain now. He was a sympathetic villain with clear goals. I loved that he understood that he was never going to be strong enough to take out the Avengers and would need them to take each other out.

Also, the twist at the ending with him killing the other Winter Soldiers? Fucking. Awesome. Not only did this show that he really wasn't out to take over the world, it ensured we didn't have a silly ending with Iron Man/Captain America teaming up to fight a group of baddies like usual. It was just the intimate battle between the three characters.

Steve breaking the others out of prison and (presumably) taking them to hide out in Wakanda until they are needed, was a great resolution. I assume that T'Challa was also considered sort of a criminal as well. Plus, the country should be strong enough to keep anyone away if need be.

And I like that Steve and Tony were able to tentatively repair their relationship.

Stuff I Didn't Like
I still don't like Vision's design. I don't know it is the coloring or how smooth he is, but it just looks weird. I am glad he goes around wearing sweater vests, though.

Sharon and Steve. I just don't get it. I really wish if they were going to hook them up, they'd at least show them spending time together. Sharon had not even revealed she was Peggy's niece until her funeral (so they can't have been spending time between movies). It just felt forced and I still think it is a bit gross considering how much Steve loved Peggy. And them kissing before the big battle felt way too much like when Peggy gave Steve his kiss before the big battle in TFA.

Though, if they are going to hook Steve up with anyone, she is the least annoying choice. I don't care about her at all so if they just erase her in later movies, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Better her than Natasha (best platonic m/f friendship ever) or Wanda (Steve is totally acting like her big brother).

The two things I was spoiled on
I was spoiled for two things on here (well three if you count Peggy's death but I figured everyone knew that was going to happen).

The first was that a black character died. I spent the whole movie thinking Rhodey or Falcon was going to be killed but it never happened. Afterwards, I realized they were probably talking about T'Challa's dad?

Bucky being frozen again. I was really worried about this but in the end if was okay. He was frozen on his own terms and he is in a safe place with people who care about him. And they are most likely going to bring him back in Avengers 3 with a shiny new arm. :D

Other shit
I really want to see some fic between Steve/Bucky/T'Challa. So...hopefully writers can give me some of that.

Someone said this movie sunk one of the popular slash ships in the fandom. I have no idea who they mean. I guess Tony/Steve but I can see a lot of makeup fanfics coming from this.

Glad Crossbones wasn't around long. Though my sister was confused by who he was. She briefly thought it was Punisher. Also, him taking off his mask to reveal ANOTHER MASK was great.

The fights scenes were fantastic.

Clint caring so much about Wanda was great.

I love that they brought back the Winter Soldier theme a couple times in the movie because it was my favorite track from TWS.

That bicep scene. ლ(´ڡ`ლ) Some of which can be seen in this B-Roll footage from the filming https://youtu.be/bOprrLuIHGE

I stopped rather shortly after Rhodey was shot out of the sky (I did get a little sad at Falcon's "...I'm sorry." and Tony blasting him away) and skipped to the end, so I thought he died until I got online.

I think Bucky's frozen again so he can be in the Black Panther movie (bc god knows they need a white man, but also bc it would ground the BP movie in established MCU-ism).

I agree with most of this. I don't actually think they topped Winter Soldier. That is still my favorite MCU movie. But it is a very clsoe second.

loooool ok

But seriously, who to slash him with? I mean if it's one of the white guys that's just more white cock worshipping, but if it's one of the black guys, is that problematic too in that implies that black guys can only be with "their own kind"?

Please tell me how I can be wrong no matter what I do, internet.

Myself and my co-worker both came out loving him, and we're both white. No one else I know (female) has seen the movie, so I can't speak for them.

Of course, I loved everyone in the movie except Cap maybe. I don't hate him, he's just too... cardboard for me.

Mostly I've been thinking about how much Bucky looked like Jesus* in that last scene of him.

*specifically a lot of illustrations I saw as a kid; the historical Jesus was not white and almost definitely didn't have metal shoulder (though neither did the illustrations)

Loved the villain (I'm guessing he'll make more appearances, which, thank fuck because Marvel villains have been sucking bad), Black Panther (and his fierce female bodyguard!) and Bucky.

Sharon was... ok. Her kiss with Steve was cute but I'm not feeling them as a couple. Sharon seems like the perfect choice for Steve because she's so laid-back, but I'm not seeing any chemistry between the actors. BW/Steve have better chemistry but I pray they don't become a thing. I wish Steve was gayer for Bucky but I'll live.

Hated Spiderman and Vision. Neither really added anything to the story and I didn't care for their quirkiness or whatever.
And I don't know if it's just me, but Iron Man has really... worn his welcome. After IM3 I really didn't care about his manpain, and throughout the whole of CW I felt so vindicated because he kept failing at everything.

Hawkeye was kinda unnecessary BUT I hope this means we'll get Scarlet Witch/Hawkeye in Infinity War parts 1 and 2, which could potentially open the door for Loki disguising himself as the Scarlet Witch and then the Hawkeye/Loki kiss happens. It's the only scene from the comics I've ever wanted to happen and I know it's stupid but LET ME LIVE OK? Fuck.
(And then Loki kills Hawkeye because I hate his face and everyone is happy.)

Lastly... WHERE THE FUCK WAS PEPPER POTTS? YOU HAD ONE JOB TONY. ONE JOB.

I really liked it, and I'm super burnt out on super hero movies. one thing I didn't like: that super shaky cam thing for battle scenes, notably in the very beginning. am I the only one who thought that was too much? it was really, really distracting.

question: is black widow officially on captain america's side now? she presumably went to prison and then got bailed out by him, right?

I liked it as an Avengers movie and it was a lot of fun, T'Challa was the best and I love him.

As a tie off to the Cap trilogy though, eeuuuuugh, it tried but it very much felt like two separate movies were slapped together and it didn't quite meld for me.

I didn't care for Spider-Man at all and the 15 minute segway for his origin story in the middle of the goddamn movie dragged way too long, he was clearly shoehorned in just because they got the rights to him and it stuck out to me like a sore thumb. There was no reason for him to be there at all, same for Scott tbh, he was fun but only there for the Giant Man bit.

Sam+Bucky were fantastic though and I needed way more of that than I got. Also just more Sam in general.

I enjoyed it enough to want to watch it again, though there was some stuff I didn't like that much (that forced kiss, the unnecessary time spend on Spider-man) and I think it could be better paced.

And then that writers interview soured me to it, and now I don't want to re-watch it anymore.

Re: Captain America: Civil War

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it as much as it was possible for me to like an adaptation (even a loose one) of Civil War, because I just really don't like that comic. I thought the movie cleaned it up well, Tony in particular came off waaayy better in this movie than in the original story. It's just a story that makes me sad and frustrated, and they did a great job of capturing why. I also thought that it was a solid Avengers movie, but Steve kinda got screwed out of getting to carry his last solo film. But all of those were decisions that the writers and I guess the Marvel Studios people made, not accidents, so in that sense I gotta say they did pretty much everything very well.

I liked it, mostly.

I would have prefered a smaller movie with Steve, Sam and Nat trying to find and help Bucky, but I was resigned to not getting that since Civil War was announced and I feel it would be unfair of me to blame the movie for not being the movie wanted, when it was good for the movie it was trying to be?

I think my most controversial opinion about it is, that I hated the airport fight? I was so poorly shot and edited, that it made no sense as an action scene. There was no progression or keeping track of where people were and when they started fighting against who they were fighting against in that second. I kept being distracted by trying to make sense of it.

I am really not sure how I feel about Bucky being refrozen.

I liked it.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like it quite as much as Winter Soldier (my #1 MCU movie so far), but it was very good.

Civil War was more a Captain America-flavored Avengers movie than a Captain America movie, but oh well. I really liked T'Challa, both as a good character (driven, vengeful, but forgiving in the end) and as eye-candy (very attractive and damn, his eyelashes are pretty). I liked Ant-Man in this, he was pretty funny. I liked Sam and Bucky and their passive-aggressiveness and sniping at each other. I liked Nat being there for Steve, even if she didn't agree with him (although really, I think it wasn't so much that she thought he was wrong, just that she doesn't think she has as clear a moral center as he does and wants to make sure she has something that will check her, keep her from putting red in the ledger). I liked that I could understand both sides, even if I didn't necessarily fully agree with either one.

I didn't really like Spider-man, though. He was okay in parts of the big fight scene, but mostly he annoyed me. Maybe I'm just burnt out on the character. I didn't appreciate how every nation in the MCU has somehow never caused collateral damage in clash - I mean, they seemed so shocked by it, so they've obviously never killed innocent civilians ever. I didn't appreciate how the bomb, set off by Rumlow, was somehow Wanda's fault because she couldn't fully contain it/control it/get it to a safe distance before it went off. I understand what Vision was saying, but does everyone in the world think that if they let the aliens attack or Rumlow get away with a biological weapon, there would have been less damage? Or maybe they think some other group would have handled it better.

The long and short of it is, think I have been turned off MCU and will just be backing away from any future movies and sticking to reading fanfic. Call it burnt out or something, but they feel more like chores than entertainment to me.

I'm thinking seeing it for a third time in theater might be a tad excessive but i'm honestly considering it. It was really fun and cool.
