I'm not avoiding the fandom, no. But I feel really bad because I am avoiding talking to a really good friend about this series. I can't help it though, she bought into the gender role "short dude must take it up the ass ALWAYS" thing hook line and sinker too and it kind of bothers me. I've been actively avoiding her tumblr because she reblogs all the Eruri stuff (and like every fifth picture is Levi crossdressing, what is up with that? o.O It seems really weirdly popular.)

I do belong to a few Ereri communities and I'm actually planning on donating some scans for scanlations of one of my favourite Ereri doujinshi artists who draws basically nothing but Eren and Levi actively switching sexually, which....yes.

But Levi/Eren is the most popular pairing in fandom so I don't understand why you're lying to your friend about liking the series at all. Not to mention just because a pairing is popular doesn't mean any one person has to like it.

Hanji/Erwin is the superior pairing anyway

It's because she and I usually love talking about series we like together. She's a really great friend, and she was there for me years ago when I came out (twice, bisexual trans man!), and normally she and I are like two peas in a pod. But she's...really, really fanatical about Erwin/Levi, and it's not even that the pairing itself actively squicks me even if I don't see it and/or like it, it's more the fandom dynamics around it, like I said in the secret. I just don't think I can handle listening to a ton of Erwin/Levi crap (and she is majorly into shipping so it would be all I would hear about, which would be alright if it wasn't something that had me running for the hills).

(...I would totally read/check out Erwin/Hanji stuff, I won't lie.)

I can understand keeping it to yourself if you don't want your ear talked off about something you don't like.

Sometimes fandom can create a sort of group think about a certain pairing. Where you might like it if there were fanworks created with different dynamics for the characters... but for some reason the majority of the fans only see it through one lens... one you might not particularly care for. It can be frustrating. The best you can do is encourage more variety. Maybe if you ever wanted to talk about you could add... "but wouldn't it be cool if Levi did this instead?" Don't take away what she likes, just add more options.

Normally I would do just that, but...it's really hard to explain anon, but she's weird about this pairing/series in a way I've never really seen before. More fanatical I guess? And while I totally respect people's right to get really fucking into things, that isn't how I feel about this series. I tentatively broached the subject of Levi/Eren with her once, and the response was very 'angry anti-shipper', so I dropped it. She's an amazing friend besides this one issue, I just felt like venting on anon. :/

No, the SNK fandom really does have bad taste. Ereri and Jeanmarco are the most popular pairings, and they're both boring and stupid. I have a hard time thinking of a popular anime fandom that has worse taste, tbh.

To be honest I like Eren/Levi way more the Erwin/Levi so I get you. Although I mostly stay away from fandom discussions on this series in general so most people don't know I like it. I don't know what it is about this fandom but everyone is super passionate about everything in the series especially if they hate it. It makes discussions of Attack on Titan really really difficult. Part of the problem may be the timing of the series coming out coincided with the height of the SJW in fandom (especially shipping) phase that flooded tumblr and the fandom hasn't recovered from that. I just read fics and look at fanart of my favorite ships and ignore everything else. So I get why you wouldn't want to say anything at all. Ship wars are no fun to be involved in.

...Yeah this secret already seems to be getting a little of that. People get really weirdly argumentative about this series, and as I wrote in another comment that's exactly why I'm kind of avoiding a good friend over this. She's got major ship goggles on and is being really "anti" anything besides Erwin/Levi, which makes avenues of conversation kind of dry up since she can't look at this series as anything other than a vehicle for shipping fantasies. :(

So I'm basically doing exactly what you are. I plan on donating some scans of my favourite doujinshi for scanlating, I just ead and look at fanart, and I try to ignore the fandom at large. Especially the anti-Ereri brigade, cue eyerolls at the "ur a pedo if u ship this" accusations and bullshit.

That's really too bad that her shipping goggles are on that tight. Sometimes I'm able to find common ground with someone with a series if we like the same secondary ship but sounds likes she's there for Erwin/Levi and that's it. So that makes discussions on the series even harder.

I never posted Ereri on my tumblr since so many of my followers/people I follow are against it. If they use the pedo argument against you it's very likely they won't be reasonable about what you have to say. It's actually hard for me to remember that people actually really like Ereri. Last night I created a whole new tumblr account because I felt constricted by my old tumblr. I originally joined as a hardcore feminist and most of my followers/people I follow are from that time in my life. I've mellowed a lot and have gotten back into slash in the last couple years so I wanted to post non-female centric stuff without feeling guilty.

but SJWs have been on tumblr since forever. The same with fandom secrets!

Just don't write about how eruri fandom portrays Levi, and how it's wrong. Because you don't know a thing. There are many arts, fanfics where Levi and Erwin are portrayed as two equal mature men, there are also many works with bottom Erwin.

Every single time I've seen Erwin/Levi it's always big strong protector!man Erwin with delicate, slim Levi. Do I doubt there are a few fics/fanarts where Erwin finally gets dicked by Levi? Not at all.

Do I think that it's nearly as prevalent as the flip-flopping between Eren/Levi and Levi/Eren? No. I've never seen one doujinshi in the wild where Erwin gets it from Levi, and I search Toranoana by "SnK general" (meaning all the doujinshis in the series come up, not just a specific couple). Meanwhile like every third doujinshi is Levi/Eren, or Eren/Levi, and the pairing top/bottom dynamics switches often. Not to mention actual switching doujinshi!

I'm not saying "Erwin/Levi is shit and you have shit taste!", I'm saying the fandom in general has shit taste and reinforces annoying gay gender roles too much, and it bugs me how prevalent it is. I'm actually glad to hear that there is some stuff for fans of Erwin/Levi (and Levi/Erwin) that isn't the woobiefied crap I keep seeing though, because as I said even though they're not my taste at all, it's not the actual pairing that bothers me.

Ha! This is almost word-for-word why I prefer ereri to eruri, because of the ship dynamics. For all that all the fics tend to warp personalities, I think their personalities are warped less in ereri fics than in eruri. For example, ereri fics tend to portray Levi as being caring and taking care of people, while a lot of eruri fics have Levi being dependent on Erwin and myopically obsessed with him (in addition to the seme/uke bullshit).

I mean, I'm even fond of the idea of eruri (and have written it, in addition to ereri), but I just can't hang out with the shippers. You're right about people being... weirdly vehement about stuff. I'm sorry about your friend :(

I can see the appeal of the Erwin/Levi (height difference, Levi's loyalty to Erwin, their mutual respect for each other), but I have just never been able to ship them together. And like I ship EVERYTHING, but IDK they've never done it for me (and I don't like Eren/Mikasa either but that's a whole other thing). And I get why you might want to keep quiet OP. Eren/Levi is without a doubt the most popular pairing, but because of that there are so many people that hate the pairing for because of the popularity.
