Considering most people these days probably have no idea that "Oakland booty" has to do with race...

I mean, maybe I'm crazy here, I don't think it's hard to figure that out? It's not like some secret code. Oakland is reasonably well known for being black (maybe less so outside of California, but still), booty is a word that's frequently associated culturally there, the line is from a rap song. It's not like it's something that takes an extraordinary amount of cultural literacy.

I had no idea that Oakland is known for being "black". I've lived on the East coast of the US my entire life. Like, I don't even know where in CA Oakland is.

East coaster here. I didn't even know Oakland was in CA.

Man no offense, but I'm just saying, I'm not out here thinking Pittsburgh is in Ohio, you know?

There aren't other Pittsburgh around the country to confuse with Pittsburgh, PA.

There are other Oaklands. Oakland, NJ. Oakland, Michgan. If there's a Pittsburgh, Oregon, you might have a point.

Oakland, NJ and Oakland, MI both have under 20,000 people. On the other hand, there is a Pittsburg, California, with 60,000 people (coincidentally very close to Oakland).

So clearly, someone from California would be even MORE justified in being confused.

That's... not how you spell Pittsburgh.

If it were Oaklande, I would agree with you.

Pittsburgh is a better-known city on the national level than Oakland. Oakland is the kind of city most people around here would dismiss as a suburb of SF.

Oakland does have like 100,000 more residents. But, sure, Pittsburgh is the largest city in its area, whereas Oakland isn't. What about Newark, then? Or Buffalo?

No one outside of the northeast really cares about Newark or Buffalo, either. It's just not important when you don't live there.

I don't think Oakland is that famous outside of California? I've never even heard of it, or never heard it talked of enough to stick in my memory, in any case.

this subthread is responding specifically to an American saying that they didn't know what state Oakland was in, not to the broader question of how famous Oakland is

Well, for one thing, Blake Lively is from California (suburban Southern California, which is one of the reasons that using the line was dumb (Oakland is in Northern California)). But even setting that aside - what about the word 'booty'? You wouldn't think that word has some racial coding attached to it?

Dude, I'm from the Midwest and I don't know very much about the culture cities on the west coast. Also the only time I was ever in Oakland, it was in Oakland's Chinatown, so...

Or legitimately young enough to have been "educated" under the NCLB bullshit from the 2000s onward. I'm not even surprised that anyone younger than 25 in the US has never heard of Oakland, CA because the American education system went straight into the toilet around 2001, and has never recovered (it's only gotten worse, in fact).

That, too. Although the subthread is about Americans not knowing American geography. To which I say "look at whjat's happened to our education system the last couple decades, are you really that surprised?"
