Re: LA face with an Oakland booty

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
There are white people who could say it. It's not OK for Blake Lively to say it. For a lot of reasons.

(Also, what makes it absurd to you that "La face with an Oakland booty" wouldn't be okay for white people to say? Like I said in the thread yesterday, it's not like you can pretend that "Oakland booty" is a phrase that has nothing to do with racial politics)

Re: LA face with an Oakland booty

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2016-05-19 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know it had to do with racial politics--let alone that it was a song--until a few minutes ago. How would anyone know that Oakland = black if they've never heard of Oakland before?

Re: LA face with an Oakland booty

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Then you probably shouldn't quote the song when you don't have even the most basic idea of what it's about

Hard to quote something you've never heard before.

Re: LA face with an Oakland booty

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm talking about Blake Lively there, who clearly had heard it and chose to quote it.

Re: LA face with an Oakland booty

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
And you're just as much fun as you were yesterday.

Re: LA face with an Oakland booty

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dear, sorry I'm not worried about political correctness gone mad

Re: LA face with an Oakland booty

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering most people these days probably have no idea that "Oakland booty" has to do with race...

Re: LA face with an Oakland booty

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, maybe I'm crazy here, I don't think it's hard to figure that out? It's not like some secret code. Oakland is reasonably well known for being black (maybe less so outside of California, but still), booty is a word that's frequently associated culturally there, the line is from a rap song. It's not like it's something that takes an extraordinary amount of cultural literacy.

Re: LA face with an Oakland booty

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I had no idea that Oakland is known for being "black". I've lived on the East coast of the US my entire life. Like, I don't even know where in CA Oakland is.

Re: LA face with an Oakland booty

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
East coaster here. I didn't even know Oakland was in CA.

Well, for one thing, Blake Lively is from California (suburban Southern California, which is one of the reasons that using the line was dumb (Oakland is in Northern California)). But even setting that aside - what about the word 'booty'? You wouldn't think that word has some racial coding attached to it?

Dude, I'm from the Midwest and I don't know very much about the culture cities on the west coast. Also the only time I was ever in Oakland, it was in Oakland's Chinatown, so...

Re: LA face with an Oakland booty

you'd have to be legitimately stupid not to

Or legitimately young enough to have been "educated" under the NCLB bullshit from the 2000s onward. I'm not even surprised that anyone younger than 25 in the US has never heard of Oakland, CA because the American education system went straight into the toilet around 2001, and has never recovered (it's only gotten worse, in fact).

Sir Mix-a-Lot disagrees

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2016-05-19 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/sir-mix-a-lot-defends-blake-livelys-oakland-booty-post-w207162

“I don’t think she’d wear that dress if she thought that booty is horrible — and to me, it ain’t horrible,” the hip-hop entertainer told the New York Daily News on Thursday, May 19. “I don’t get it at all. She’s saying she’s proud of her butt. I’m glad she embraced the look, because that’s what I wanted (with the song).”

He continued, “All I would say to the critics is let’s better understand the context of what she said. If [what she’s] saying is, ‘I have this butt that Mix-a-Lot was talking about in ‘Baby Got Back,’’ that’s a good thing. She’s saying I’ve embraced this ideal of beautiful. However, if what she’s saying is, ‘I cannot believe I got this fat, this is horrible,’ then I agree with the critics.”

“I’m glad she didn’t pull it down,” he said. “I don’t think she should.”

OK

I don't really agree with him (for one thing, it seems like he's addressing the song in general, not the specific line; for another thing, I mean, no offense to Sir Mix-a-Lot but I think he might not be entirely the most perceptive analyst of contemporary cultural politics). But good for him, I guess.

He is addressing her specific post which has that specific line. And he says that she is specifically talking about her butt. But yeah, I guess he could be addressing the song in general.

[personal profile] lady_dragoon 2016-05-19 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
...Are you seriously telling a black artist what he's allowed to think in regards to his own song? And then claiming you know more about cultural politics than he does? Because holy shit.

Re: Sir Mix-a-Lot disagrees

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, long before Blake Lively made her comment, there were tumblr posts telling white girls not to use that song to feel good about their butts because the song is only for black girls with big butts, not them.

This really should be /thread and it's very depressing that it isn't.

It's his work, and it's his feelings on it that matter. Nobody else gets to decide that for him. Particularly not armchair cultural politicians.

+1. It's his work. And therefore his opinion that everyone should be deferring to rather than Tumblr SJW word salad.
