I am a very, very picky person. I don't like condiments of any kind except salt. I'm slowly growing out of that by forcing myself to try things, but mayo will never ever ever be one. It makes me gag.

What I ended up doing was drenching them in salt and then giving up with three to go.

My old room mate used to be extremely picky, but living with me for three years eventually broke her lol.

Chipotle mayo is hardly even mayo, if you're ever thinking of giving it ago. Tastes nothing like it and functions more like a typical dressing like ranch or similar: there's no eggy taste or lemon, and the heat/smokiness completely cuts through the fat. Plus you needn't use much of it since it's quite strong in flavour.

Not saying you have to try it, just that if you're ever presented with yam/sweet potato fries again it's an option worth considering. :)

I keep trying to get into things. Everyone around me really loves salads and sea foods and I'm trying to get to a place where I can enjoy those things with them. I've gotten better at eating foods with condiments cooked in that I would normally avoid (There was sour cream on the chicken and I loved it), but adding things later is still a big no for me. I might give it a try but 'heat' in food always overpowers flavor for me, no matter how little there is, all I can taste is spice.

Ahh, yeah, being able to taste flavours past the burn is something that develops over time and exposure. I remember when I couldn't really eat spicy food; exact same issue.

Again, that's something you can choose to ease yourself into if you're curious. I would recommend it, since heat acts a little like adding salt to certain foods in that it opens up dimensions of flavour that otherwise you can't really distinguish. But no need to go overboard.

In some cases that ability to mask other unpleasant flavours and textures (like the sweet potato fries being too sweet, for example) is also fairly desirable if you can build up a bit of a tolerance.

I have a partner who loves all the things I hate: Spicy food, sea food, and salad dressing. So yeah, it's something I'm going to try to ease into. Right now I settle for stealing bites off their plate.

This is the second time we have had a really enjoyable conversation about food, do you cook often?

I cook as often as my schedule allows, since it's really the only way I have been able to...

a) Lose weight and keep it off (at one point I was close to 200lbs; chronic illness, wooooo)

b) Feed myself plus room mates on under $100/person, with me footing a grocery bill and doing the cooking

c) Maintain an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet without wanting to strangle things lol

Plus, one of my greatest joys in life is feeding people in a way that is healthy and balanced but also enjoyable for everyone involved. I am definitely guilty of expressing my love through food.

Oh jeez you had to learn to get creative. Ovo-lacto is no eggs no milk, yes? I'm sorry if that's really obvious.

I'm guilty of wanting to cook for people too, but not well. I cook rather terribly when left to my own devices, so I usually end up baking, which comes out well but is the opposite of healthy.

Ovo-lacto means I still eat milk and eggs, unlike people who are vegan (although some vegans are different from other vegans in that they will consume honey, etc).

Still requires getting fairly creative if you want to make beans and tofu taste good though lol.

Ok I was confused because I thought that was just a given. I know very little about vegetarianism...

Nothing makes beans taste good. The texture alone gives them away as a demon food. I've had tofu, I didn't think it tasted bad, per se, but I didn't care for the texture. It mostly didn't taste like anything.

You have to do a lot to both of them to make them palatable. Tofu seems like a one-note thing, but the texture is different if it's silken, medium, or firm... and that's even before fried vs. baked vs. pressed vs. smoked vs. sprouted... etc.

It can be very meaty and pleasing if it's prepared and seasoned correctly, but yeah. Takes a lot of trial and error and experimentation to make a pleasing experience out of a largely plant-based diet.

I only had it as bland cafeteria food so I guess I'm missing out. I try not to avoid things now. If it's served, I try it. I'm actually finding I like a lot of things I would have just said 'ew' to before. I regret spending most of my childhood eating spaghetti ohs and peanut butter.

Yeah, if you want to try tofu again, definitely definitely eat it at an Asian restaurant where they have half a chance of knowing what they're doing with it.

It's one of those foods that's just horrid unless you know how to prepare it, at which point it can become very nice.

That's how I feel when people tell me they don't like brussel sprouts. Definitely will try it next time I'm out to eat, thanks for the recommendation!

Np! I wish you happy eating. :)
