Unpopular Opinion Time

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not thrilled about Laverne Cox as Frank N Furter. Frank was never meant to be a trans woman. He was and always has been a scary-looking guy in a dress (or leather corset, depending on the scene).

Casting a woman in the role (trans or cis) makes the whole "sweet transvestite" thing not make sense anymore if the costume is still about the fishnets, heels and makeup. He'll be a woman wo dresses and looks like a woman, and that kinda defeats the whole point of his character.

Plus, way to go casting the trans-woman as a narcissistic, violent psychopath who kills a dude, serves his corpse as dinner, and gets shot in the back at the end.

In terms of the story, yes, it's a shit move. In terms of real life benefits to REAL people at least they're not casting another straight white man in the role.

I mean, what's more important , that you get a story that works, or that a Trans WoC get's a paycheck and a chance to make her real life better?

She could be cast as someone who isn't Frank. I think she'd make an awesome Magenta, TBH.

Re: Unpopular Opinion Time

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
But frank is the main character. It's the best paid, the highest profile. You'd really another straight white man get's the highest paycheck and the most recognition while the Trans WoC gets sidelined as another support character?

it's not like Laverne Cox is in poverty though or doesn't get acting roles much

there's better movies that she could star in and changing the intention of a character is kinda lame

Erm, she is living in poverty. As well as living in constant fear of rape and murder. We don't treat trans black women well in this country

OT, Woc makes me very uncomfortable because it is only one letter and half a sound away from being a literal racist slur.

Do you actually pronounce the word out like that? I thought it was just a written shorthand and you would say "woman of color" aloud, or in your mind when reading it

Partly off topic, but I worry about what we're doing to the trans community. I worry that we might helping them to succeed to death. Like I think of all we did to push gay acceptance in the 90's and 2000's, We turned them into the cool hip thing to be shown in progressive media, and now we see gay men like Milo Yabbadabbadoo and Stephen Fry thinking they're too good to be progressive and being utter contemptible scum. I wonder if we're pushing and celebrating trans people too hard and turning them into the worst of us.

Pft, as a trans person living below the poverty line and who spent time homeless, who knows other trans people who are homeless, disowned, or pushed into sex work... I could stand to see more success pushed our way.

Seriously. Being thought as tryhard liberal scum is way, WAY better than being homeless.

So, what, we have to continue oppressing trans* people, to make sure they remain appropriately leftist?

That's the stupidest, most fucked up version of accelerationaism I ever heard

That we get a story that works. Every fucking time. If you don't have that, there is no real opportunity cause who's ever gonna cast em again? All they did was be in something shitty.

Yeah, seconding the "bring on the POC Frank" comments, but also the "why Laverne Cox?" ones, because seeing a pretty woman as Frank just doesn't work. Maybe if they put her in, I dunno, sharp suits? But then the visuals aren't as cool. Idk.

At least they're not casting a straight white man in the role... of a straight white man?

Yeah. That makes TOTAL sense. Instead of creating new characters of all races (including white), let's erase all white men from Hollywood by shoehorning in black people into every white character we can find. That's gonna work!

I think it both hurts the cause for trans* acceptance and it weakens the subversiveness of Rocky Horror.

I don't care one way or the other about Ms. Cox being in Rocky Horror, but who is she fooling with the 1984 birth year? It gave me a nice laugh, though.

I don't really know much about her but I am assuming since she's a "her", then ... "transvestite" doesn't apply? How's this supposed to work out exactly?

Re: Unpopular Opinion Time

well, unless she AND her twin brother have been fudging their birthdate, then I'm guessing it's legit (http://www.mlamar.com/biography/)

I get why people don't like the casting, but I absolutely 100 percent to not understand this statement. Because it seems objectively wrong. What this casting choice means is that a woman is playing a man who dresses as a woman. How is that confusing?

Re: Unpopular Opinion Time

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Because it takes away everything that makes Frank, Frank. Frank is supposed to be a garish, creepy, ridiculous man who runs around in women's clothing. You lose this effect when you try to have a woman play him.

Re: Unpopular Opinion Time

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I think for me, the word "transvestite" is very much tied to it being a man dressed as a woman, whether that man be gay, straight, bi, etc.

The general public is easily confused, and already conflate being a transvestite (a man who likes dressing up as a woman but is still a man) and being transsexual. This is only going to muddy the waters in terms of people understand what being trans actually is.
