tbh the list of "go-to" actors in general is really short, and that's sad. So many roles that could use a fresh face and it's the same old people over and over again.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-25 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It's obviously especially bad for non-white actors, but Hollywood has only a handful of even white actors that get cast in certain genres. For example, in action movies, you've got Scarlet Johansson or Jennifer Lawrence in leading action female roles, basically. There is such an obsession over booking actors with "star power" that new faces almost never get a try - hell, even if you're big name but haven't done a certain genre, you're probably not going to get cast.

Are you really going to blame people on the internet for not fancasting people they may not have ever heard of or don't feel attached to? What? You expect people to just throw darts at a wall of an appropriately diverse group of ranodm underused actors?

People don't fancast to promote a level of diversity that's palatable to you; they fancast to create mental images of characters they're familiar with portrayed by people they're familiar with. Blame Hollywood all you want, but this "damn the fans for not scouring indie movies and unknown people for their fancasts!!!!" is stupid.

YeH, that's totally what the secret says, because we all know that saying "I don't like this thing" is a searing indictment of everyone who does that thing. So when I say, "I'm sick of eating oatmeal for breakfast", what I'm actually doing is BLAMING everyone who has the temerity to eat oatmeal for breakfast. Excellent reading comprehension there.

I mean she's being cast as a human in these things more than actual reality (yes I know very well about Queen of Katwe and potentially Black Panther, but after three years her movie roles are an alien, a stewardess with five lines, and a wolf when she's not on Broadway), but we don't know what she's being offered or turning down.

Hollywood is a business and they want someone bankable. If they bring in money, they get parts. It'd be nice to see some variety (and better casting) but I'm not holding my breath.

I think a great deal of it is Hollywood's fault for not giving more exposure/chances to 'unknowns'.

Unfortunately, it's difficult to pin the blame on that on any one person or entity...I suppose big name producers could step up and case more variety, but they'd definitely get some backlash for that, sadly.

It's a v real and sad problem and fandom even more tends to latch on to their 5 actors for everything (even more so w/ nonwhite actors). It's boring and lowkey reductive.

Ms. Nyong'o has two advantages over Halle Berry as a black actress. First, she's actually black. Second, she's actually an actress.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You better not be black, anon. How dare you deny anyone their heritage. He's, she's half white. You can't force her to choose one part of her bloodline over the other. Fuck you and your racism.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-25 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I never admit I don't find her attractive because people will call me racist if I do.

Even though I bet I can name other actresses that I do think are attractive who are black who these people have never heard of.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
If your hipster list is a handful of women who are significantly lighter with less obviously African features than Lupita then you're probably still racist.

Hollywood seems pretty terrible at giving new or unknown talent a go in general, though it's definitely an entirely different ballgame for non-white actors.

That being said I am so stoked for her in Black Panther whoever she ends up playing.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-25 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember some very perceptive things being said on the topic when the idea of Idris Elba as Bond came up. That we are broaching him because he's 'The' black actor RN, instead of the litany of other possible choices. People weren't discussing a Black Bond, they were discussing Elba Bond. And from a progressive standpoint, if the role isn't actually open to the Everyman of colour, that's not a whole lot better.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
He isn't even talented enough to be THE black actor. He's just alright.

Not being snarky, but please name some cool black actors and actresses! Or models, too!

I was writing a story a month or so ago and trying to picture what my male lead (who's black) looked like. I could only conjure vague images as I had no knowledge of any slender, youthful black men with very dark skin.

I couldn't think of a single actor who fit the slightly more femme type (sensitive, artistic, slim, expressive) for a male actor. I searched models, and found a few who were nearer to that, but I know there's lots of variety among black people, not just white people, so why is there only a few actors, or mostly one type of model?

I still can't quite picture my lead in my head, and it's bugging me again now. -_-

Anyway RECS PLS (male or female).

Has she really been in many major roles? Maybe I'm just not paying attention, but I feel she's far from over-exposed compared to other actresses.

Hollywood likes to cling to big names. If you have a black actress who recently won an Oscar, she's going to get the big roles for black actresses so they can put "Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong'o" on the posters.

Which is weird because studies have shown, IIRC, that star power doesn't actually sell tickets anymore, franchises do. So Hollywood could easily give unknown actors a chance more often and still make a ton of money, but for some reason they don't.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'd agree with you, OP, except I think she is the single most beautiful female actor working right now. So cast her in all the things; I won't complain.
