OMG someone thought a het romance was boring! SHOCKING.

I don't understand this comment? All het romances are not the same, nor are they treated the same way by fandom

I think the AYRT's sarcasm was fair. Fandom, as a whole, is not exactly big on het romance. The vast majority of the art, fic, and general enthusiasm is directed towards slash ships, no news there. (Though I don't know much about anime or gaming fandoms, so for all I know those could have more het.)

There can definitely be an argument made that fandom prefers slash because the way the mainstream depicts het is usually boring. But the basic sentiment, "this het romance is boring" - whether deserved or not - is extremely common in fandom. To the point where, if one happens to enjoy het ships, it can get pretty tiresome.

Damn it, this was meant to be a reply to [personal profile] diet_poison. Ffffuck.

Bullshit. A lot of fandoms are very het-heavy. Look at all those TV shows with a male and female lead (Castle, Bones etc.), the big ship is always the het ship. Or if you want a book fandom, the ASOIAF fandom is waaaay more into het than slash, and I'm sure there are other examples as well, but that's the first one that comes to mind.

Sure, many fandoms are slash-heavy, but there are also lots of fandoms that are really into the main het romance. Especially if a canon focuses on the het romance, people will often enjoy it. What many people don't enjoy is the tacked on kind of het romance where the story is about something else, but the main character gets a random love interest because main characters need love interests, apparently.

tv fandoms in general seem to be pretty het dominant to me and if they aren't it's usually because the show is about dudes and there are little to no female characters, so unless the fans create ofc's the dominant ships in those will be slash.

"I think the AYRT's sarcasm was fair. Fandom, as a whole, is not exactly big on het romance."

I don't think that's a good generalization to make about fandom because it depends on what fandom you're in. My guess is your fandom participation in particular is coloring your view of just how dominant slash is.

No, AO3 statistics, as well as your basic run of the mill observation, are what is shaping my view of how dominant slash is.

49.9% of the fics on AO3 are slash.

24.7% of the fics on AO3 are het.

Slash is literally twice> as popular as het. A lead which is made even more dramatic when you factor in that there are way, waaaaaaaayyyy more het pairings in canon. The fact is, fans leap over canonical het pairings in order to ship slash pairings a huge amount of the time.

That doesn't really bother me. There are several slash pairings I adore, including the one that has been my main OTP for several years now. I like slash. And of course I wish there were more LGBT relationships depicted in the media. Because just as it's plain that fans will leap over het pairings in order to ship slash ones, the people who write the mainstream media we all consume have a tendency of leaping over possible slash pairings in order to go with het ones.

But to suggest that fandom, when averaged out as a general whole, is not wearing goggles that are liberally tinted with slashiness is just...a really, really weird denial of reality.

SA

Here's a pretty good article with some solid research into fandom trends, for anyone who is interested: https://ladygeekgirl.wordpress.com/2013/11/12/why-is-there-so-much-slash-fic-some-analysis-of-the-ao3-census/

This assumes than AO3 is representative of fandom as a whole. They believe they are, not surprisingly. But I'm not sure that's true.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
But using stats from all fandoms combined to measure the slash ratio is just plain useless. Because there are some very, very popular slash dominated fandoms (like Haikyuu!! and SnK, which are the two leading fandoms in the anime category) and that massively distorts the numbers - far too much to say "fandom as a whole is like this".
There are plenty fandoms where more than twice the number of fics is het.

The fact that it was het wasn't what made it boring, though. Feel free to remove that chip off your shoulder, 'cause I'm not a slash shipper who automatically thinks all het ships are inferior.
