I haven't seen the series, but the romance in the book makes no sense either. Romance in Le Carré books usually doesn't make any sense.

I found it believable for them to be attracted to each other and for Jed to feel safer with him, but I found myself caring about them more as individual characters than a ship.

I was so here for the tension between Pine/Roper and Corky's conflicting hate/lust for Pine, though.

I don't understand this comment? All het romances are not the same, nor are they treated the same way by fandom

I think the AYRT's sarcasm was fair. Fandom, as a whole, is not exactly big on het romance. The vast majority of the art, fic, and general enthusiasm is directed towards slash ships, no news there. (Though I don't know much about anime or gaming fandoms, so for all I know those could have more het.)

There can definitely be an argument made that fandom prefers slash because the way the mainstream depicts het is usually boring. But the basic sentiment, "this het romance is boring" - whether deserved or not - is extremely common in fandom. To the point where, if one happens to enjoy het ships, it can get pretty tiresome.

I haven't seen it, so I can't comment on their romance, but good lord Hiddleston and Debicki need to spend time on screen together ALL the TIME, they look so good together, it's like art. And I'm not even a Hiddleston fangirl.

I kinda didn't perceive it as a romance. They were sexually attracted to each other, they each needed an ally...at the end, they aren't even together, really. They go separate ways, and her "come visit soon" meant to me "there's still some things we need to talk about, and also, we should fuck again".

They did look stunning together, though.
