I think the thing that frustrates me is that that picture is from a funeral. A place where people get together to comfort each other and tell stories about the person who died. If you are laughing at a funeral, then that's a good thing. Also, George W. Bush was a terrible president. That doesn't mean he wasn't also a human being who was capable of interpersonal relationships.

I know right? Funerals are a time to put away rivalries and celebrate the life of the person who died.

And George W. Bush was pretty terrible but he also seems like he would have been really fun to have a beer with.

Exactly. Also, the impression I get is that he was a terrible president and a bit of an idiot, but not a bad guy when it came to actual social interaction.

A beer and some pretzels.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I see what you did there, and I approve.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Then they can go quail hunting with Cheney.

Man not disrespecting the part about funerals but fuck having a beer with GWB

+1

It always baffles me a bit when people feel the need to demonize a person because they have different political views. It's still possible to get along on a personal level. And it's surely more productive than artificially producing hostility.

As long as they are not actively harming people or trying to preach to me about ____________, I'm pretty laid back around people. Half my coworkers are pretty conservative but somehow we all get along.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure that I could get along with George W Bush if I wanted to. But there's some people you don't want to get along with, and Bush isn't over that line for me but he's pushing along towards it.

And it's not just a question of political views, either. I think there's a distinction that's relevant here between political views and political actions.

I'm not having a beer with Dick Cheney. I'm having a beer with Dick Cheney's stupid puppet.

They are two of about a dozen people in the whole world who've shared a unique, weird experience in their lives, and they're at the funeral of one of the others. He may be a piece of shit (and good god, he is) but he's a person, and she and he have something specific and real in common.

I'm so fucking sick of people saying this about Bush. He's a smug, condescending asshole that grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth. His down-home country shtick is entirely fake.

His dog portraits are nice though. Wish he would've focused more on art instead of politics.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Uncomfortable parallels right there....

Seriously. Jesus Christ, dude. I think W. was a terrible president (the worst evvuhhhh? Nah, WW) but come on! It's a FUNERAL. What the fuck is wrong with you, you're judging how people act at a funeral? People should put aside politics at a funeral.

I once went to a funeral for someone who had a strained relationship with all of their friends and family due to actually being a massive abusive jerk that nobody liked. They all cried about how much they missed them and how sad it was they were gone. Funerals are weird.
