Information wants to be free.

Which is why we have wikipedia and lots of news sites, all of which you can access for free! You can also look up a synopsis of Deadpool for free, thereby giving you all of the information. There's no reason to pirate it except 'I want it and I don't want to pay for it.'

There's no reason to pirate it except 'I want it and I don't want to pay for it.'

Well now, that's just patently untrue.

"I want it and I can't pay for it" alone is another reason. Then there's "I want it but it's not available in a language I can understand" "I already own this but I'm too lazy to dig up the physical copy of it/it's on another computer/etc" "I want to make a GIF and it's easier to download an ep than rip one from my DVD" and it goes on and on.

I want it and CAN'T is not justifiable, there are other entertainment options for you. Language barriers fall under my understanding of things that aren't available in your country so we are agreed there, and I can understand if you already own it. Wanting to make a GIF is not justifiable, unless, again, you already own it.

So you're saying if you're a monolingual English-speaker in Japan and can buy a manga in Japanese there, but not in English, it's okay to pirate the English version online?

I can understand if you already own it.

Well there you go. There's more reasons than just "I want it and don't want to pay for it."

I don't consider any piracy to be ok. In that sitution, the ideal solution would be to purchase the manga and then download the translation.

Fine. I amend my statement to 'There are no reasons to pirate something you don't own if it is available in your area/language, besides 'I want it.'

Cool, we're making progress.

Re: Controversial Opinions/Thoughts

Yep. I'm not completely heartless. Although I'd rather support the idea of making everything more readily available for purchase in subtitles in all countries.

That being said, I DO think media is overpriced these days. I get why people pirate, I just don't think it's acceptable.

NAYRT - As I mentioned in my own comment, you can go to a library. Or borrow the movie from a friend.

Not everyone has access to a library, or friends with media you can borrow.

nayrt but sucks for you, then, you're still stealing. you are not entitled to entertainment.

Copyright infringement isn't theft, and calling it that won't make it so.

you are not entitled to entertainment.

Piracy =/= entertainment. There are lots of things that people pirate that have nothing to do with them wanting to be entertained.

Then stop being so poor and miserable instead of stealing from your financial betters.

People believing libraries in all countries offer more than (a limited selection of) books... ah, right, this is another discussion where people forgot to add "in America."

Re: Controversial Opinions/Thoughts

[personal profile] blitzwing 2016-05-26 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, even adding "in America." doesn't fix their statement.

And don't forget everyone has middle and upper class friends who have huge movie and book collections to loan out! LOL.

Re: Controversial Opinions/Thoughts

But of course, doesn't everyone have some friends like that? /s

Every time piracy comes up, most "acceptable alternatives" either don't apply most of the time and/or end with the creators still not getting any money anyway.

It's almost like people want to show off their moral high ground instead of considering the subject seriously.

and/or end with the creators still not getting any money anyway.

This is why I'm confused as to why borrowing from a friend is acceptable. They still don't make money. At least with the library they get royalties.

and so? book isn't there, you don't get to read book. you are not entitled to said book, or DVD. you do not deserve it by virtue of being human.

Missing the point, aren't you?

Re: Controversial Opinions/Thoughts

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
not really?

Re: Controversial Opinions/Thoughts

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not arguing about on side or the other, just saying that if your "solution" isn't an alternative in the first place, then it doesn't make sense to mention it as it was the perfect solution.

Re: Controversial Opinions/Thoughts

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
That is absolutely true, but it's also only the first half of the quote. What Stewart Brand actually said was "Information wants to be free. It also wants to be very, very expensive." That tension creates various interesting conflicts.
