Piracy is only acceptable if the thing in question is literally unavailable in your country, and I've never seen any other argument against it that didn't boil down to 'But I want it!' There are plenty of entertainment options if you're broke, it's not like if you don't illegally download Deadpool you will never be able to watch a movie again.

Same, pretty much.

I mean... at the very least, get movies from the library. That's how people did it before you could easily download stuff.

My library isn't all that great in the DVD department unless you want movies and TV shows for really little kids.

Typo

Information wants to be free.

Which is why we have wikipedia and lots of news sites, all of which you can access for free! You can also look up a synopsis of Deadpool for free, thereby giving you all of the information. There's no reason to pirate it except 'I want it and I don't want to pay for it.'

There's no reason to pirate it except 'I want it and I don't want to pay for it.'

Well now, that's just patently untrue.

"I want it and I can't pay for it" alone is another reason. Then there's "I want it but it's not available in a language I can understand" "I already own this but I'm too lazy to dig up the physical copy of it/it's on another computer/etc" "I want to make a GIF and it's easier to download an ep than rip one from my DVD" and it goes on and on.

I want it and CAN'T is not justifiable, there are other entertainment options for you. Language barriers fall under my understanding of things that aren't available in your country so we are agreed there, and I can understand if you already own it. Wanting to make a GIF is not justifiable, unless, again, you already own it.

NAYRT - As I mentioned in my own comment, you can go to a library. Or borrow the movie from a friend.

Not everyone has access to a library, or friends with media you can borrow.

nayrt but sucks for you, then, you're still stealing. you are not entitled to entertainment.

People believing libraries in all countries offer more than (a limited selection of) books... ah, right, this is another discussion where people forgot to add "in America."

That is absolutely true, but it's also only the first half of the quote. What Stewart Brand actually said was "Information wants to be free. It also wants to be very, very expensive." That tension creates various interesting conflicts.

What you're describing is "understandable." That's not the same as acceptable.

OP
Fair enough, but I also can't bring myself to care as long as they pay for things when they're available. I think the fact that in the internet age there are still things that are only available in their own countries is pretty dumb.

Yep. And I wish I weren't too cowardly to say this unanon.

OP

I am a named user. Trust me, I get it. But I like being able to walk away if things get too heated.

You can do that under a username you know. Haven't seen anyone screaming "HOW DARE YOU WALK AWAY?! COME BACK HERE AND FIGHT ME!!!" on FS yet.

I wonder how many posts it'll take before the OP of this thread admits they only care about piracy if it affects them.

Re: Controversial Opinions/Thoughts

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have any idea what thread that is or what you're talking about.

Re: Controversial Opinions/Thoughts

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I only pirate stuff I can't get on dvd, whether because it's not available, it technically is but was released once 15 years ago and you might find a used copy going for $200 on ebay once a year, or it's only available dubbed in Swahili with multi-gen google translate gibberish subtitles. My internet connection and computer are both slow, so if it's only available to stream I get friends with faster internet to pirate things. That said, I own upwards of 200 dvds and maybe 5 pirated shows/movies.

Now, if you're talking musical theatre bootlegs, that's a different story, but if they offered official soundboard recordings after every show I'd buy those too.

Re: Controversial Opinions/Thoughts

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
OP

As a musical theatre fan, I am frankly irritated that they don't release official recordings more often. I get it if it's in its heyday, but once the original cast has moved on and things have calmed down, I will gladly give you more money to get to watch at home. It's not like it would affect ticket sales, that's a whole different experience.

Meh.

If I wanna check it out, but have misgivings and I don't wanna drop $60 on it, you bet your ass I'll pirate.

If it's something I absolutely LOVE, but can't afford at the time and/or have pressing matters that need money more, then I'll pirate.

Judge away. Cause you ain't gonna stop me.
