I'm not familiar with this ship (and frankly probably won't get around to Borderlands), so can someone just give me a summary? I'm curious. I've heard a lot about this ship being popular, but I know nothing about it.

It's okay to like an abusive ship, but I do feel that people should acknowledge their ship is abusive.

Handsome Jack was in charge of Hyperion, a huge corporation, and was a homicidal authoritarian leader who wished to restore order to the planet by killing all the bandits (some of whom were basically just people he disagreed with). He was a very charismatic leader (and even can be oddly likable outside of the game as well, he has some really good dialogue)

The morality of everyone in the game can be considered a bit gray and there's a decent amount of people who don't think Jack is entirely evil. Arguments range from pointing at evidence that Jack could have a severe mental illness (which as someone who is going to school for psychiatry, actually does hold some water) to folks who totally woobie-fy him and ignore the fact he isnt above killing/torturing anyone and emotionally abused his own daughter.

Rhys has a serious case of hero worship for Jack and grows close to him throughout the game (their relationship remains unhealthy as fuck throughout) and SPOILER ALERT:
Jack ends up betraying him in the end.

It's interesting, isn't it, how that happens? I've definitely had ships that I liked because they were unhealthy and fucked up, and it seems that that's one of the primary motivations for shipping in general, but it also seems to be the one that's most difficult for non-shippers to understand (and even for some shippers themselves to understand!).

We're always looking for catharsis, I guess.

I play Borderlands but I've not played the game the secret is on about but IA with this basically.

People like fucked up shit, and pairings are not immune to this at all. I'd say that a well done messed up relationship has just as much appeal as a perfectly healthy one, but I'll concede that it's harder for those outside of the fucked up ones to get it.

That being said I don't judge even if it's not my thing, you do you.

I forced myself through TFtBL despite not liking the Borderlands franchise at all (looter shooters tend to bore me in general) just because I enjoy Telltale Games' stuff. It was a decent game, I'll give it that, but yeah, I don't get all of the hype around Rhack. I mean, due to shit that went down in the game, I just don't see it at all, and yes, it would be a totally abusive, unhealthy ship if it made any sense to even happen. Nevermind that I dislike Handsome Jack and Rhys anyway so... Yeah, not my thing. But yep, I'm not surprised that people are shipping the white dudes as usual. If I was to ship anyone in the game, I do like the Rhys/Sasha ship, that was kind of cute.

TFTBL was significantly more story based (and had much better character animation tbh) so it was more appealing to people who weren't gamers/didn't play games very often than some of the earlier games (literally the reason why I'm in the fandom is because my roommate was playing the game and I glanced over her shoulder and thought it looked cool)

And what the fuck are you talking about? I've seen plenty of fandom stuff related to ships other than Rhack and non-shipping related fanwork. A pretty significant amount of the fandom actually condemns Rhack shippers (even occasionally to the point of making death threats)

this ship got me active in fandom again and got me writing after a long, long time of not being able to do anything creative. it also helped me to meet quite a bit of friendly people, ninety-eight percent of them who were willing to address just how unhealthy and problematic a real life relationship between two people like Rhys and Jack would be. this is a dirtybadwrong ship and most of the shippers, believe it or not, are very aware of that, and most of the shippers put proper warnings and notes on the content they create and share. a lot of the shippers are even abuse survivors themselves and, like many survivors, like to use creative means as an outlet.

meanwhile, the people like you go around sending death threats and telling these shippers what awful, horrible people they are, simply for writing a piece of fanfiction, suggesting that instead of drawing up a quick ten minute sketch of Rhys and Jack or something, they should instead be donating money or volunteering at shelters or whatever it is you think will make them atone for what 'rape/abuse apologists' they are. because........... they happen to enjoy........ a FICTIONAL relationship.
