Didn't they create a separate place for the serious things that came through the wank report and saved the original Fandom Wank for silly stuff? I could swear I remember looking at the wank report comments and seeing stuff like "that's depressing, send it over to [whatever the other place was called; I don't remember]".

I am of the firm belief that Social Justice itself is a good thing, AS LONG AS IT STAYS REAL WORLD ORIENTED. The minute it crosses over into fandom it stops being social justice and starts being bullying.

I mean I like being able to see serious takes on the Sanford rape case and people outraged, and people very intelligently going through why referring to it as '20 minutes of action' is a manipulative thing. And lawyers talking about how judges empathize with the people involved, so that's why a former sports coach now judge is going to feel a lot sorrier for a student athlete than, say, a poor black girl who steals a candybar from a store.

Then you get into fandom and it's people taking the buzzwords and using them to bully everyone. "My incest ship is healthy and awesome and just fiction, YOUR incest ship is abusive and problematic and hurtful to survivors."

"If Sherlock is taking it up the butt from Watson it's fine, if Watson takes it up the butt from Sherlock it's PEDOPHILLIA and CHILD ABUSE and GROOMING and RACISM and wrong! And anyone who tried to defend them is DEFENDING all those awful things!"

"If you don't ship Stormpilot you're RACIST! If you don't ship JediStorm you're MISOGYNISTIC! If you don't ship HanLeia you're AGEIST! If you like Kylo you're A RAPIST"

And the main difference, I think, is that Real World SJW has a plan.

3. Propose ways to help injustice

The Fandom SJW just wants to scream

4. Feel superior.

I have seen dozens of "If you don't ship X you're a racist" posts go by, and not one single one has ever proposed anything helpful. Have X ship weeks! Promote fanart! Have "Go leave a nice comment on three X ship fics specifically saying what you liked about them!" events. Make positivity posts and promote them. Defend shippers from hate. I can think of all those off the top of my head, but those are work. It's much easier to scream.

I liked f_w and Journalfen. For all that its servers were robust and half of the LJ-imported journal themes didn't work properly, it was a nice fun corner of the Internet.

The owner of JF is trying to get it back up but RL seems to have stomped on them in a big way.

I once saw an entire Fandom Wank-like site just for the My Little Pony fandom. I think you could probably do the same for Steven Universe.

A lot of the wank that got reported in its twilight years was more Unfunny_Buisness than anything, and a lot of the Twitter/Tumblr wank today would fall under that category as well (like the Steven Universe fandom driving someone to attempt suicide over fan art, or the Sherlock 221b Con Wank incident, or the Rabid Puppies/Hugo Awards). It'd be less funny and far more infuriating tbh.

Some things should remain dead, and FW died at just the right time. That's just me.

A lot of the things Fandom Wank reported on were honestly pretty horrible. It was simply part of the site's culture to be able to laugh at awful stuff. I think that can be better than treating it with total seriousness, especially if you're not in a position to change it.

I've been in fandom for a long time and was a massive fan of the LJ era, but I must admit that I never frequented fandom_wank. Once in a while, but not even nearly religiously like some people.

Not that the wank couldn't be very amusing, but I guess it wasn't my thing.

With fandoms current climate and format I'm not sure how a wank community would work anyway. Like...I can only imagine the comm would be flooded with posts, and some folks would post about next to nothing if the community wasn't heavily monitored.

Maybe with a team of mods and strict rules it could work, but IDK...

I definitely think the current format would make it difficult. I was around sf_d when they started going to Tumblr for fodder and linking to particular comments was a nightmare between the awkward reblog chains that make up conversations and the fact that the urls change easily whenever someone changes their name on that site.

I felt bad for enjoying some of it. And I have grown kinder with age; I'm not sure it would be fun now. More, "so, you are judging all these people, are you?"

I get my fill of discourse just searching fandom tags on tumblr. Try to avoid my own fandom so I don't get emotionally invested, but other fandoms drama is always entertaining.

Yeah, I think it's just possible that fandom has grown too large for F_W anymore. Any wank pointed to for fun would eventually devolve into a flame-for-all.

I really wish fandom_wank would come back too. I started lurking there shortly before journalfen went under and I had so many good laughs. :( I miss it, especially the Anne Rice mockery and the Scalzi posts. It was a good place.
