Question thread

'Cause I got one.

Mosquito bites (mildly TMI)

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been having unusually bad reactions to mosquito bites this summer. Rather than the usually white and puffy bite, I've been getting giant, hard welts that take a few days to go down. And now I have one bite that has been leaking clear fluid for almost 24 hours. Various google searches have only produced results about pus (which this isn't) or people who pop their bites (which I haven't, and also, I don't even know that was a thing).

Is this something that's happened to anyone before? Should I be freaking out or just keep slapping bandaids on it and hope it stops soon?

I get those and, well, I'm still alive.

I didn't know that was abnormal.

I've had those for years. There are such things as mosquito repellent bracelets that work quite well, actually.

It happens to me every time I get bit. It's the result of a relatively mild allergic reaction. It isn't going to kill you, just take some OTC antihistamines. It'll help the inflammation go down faster.

It's just serous fluid, and isn't a big deal. What they said ^: an antihistamine and maybe some calamine or hydrocortisone ointment to keep from scratching and you'll be fine.

As you get older, sometimes you 'catch' an allergy, or a really mild one gets worse. Don't scratch! :) (I react horribly to insect bites of all kinds, and a month later will still have a red mark.)

Happens to me. Sometimes they're quarter-sized welts, and they itch like the devil. I get some of the normal ones, and some that swell up. Presume it's an allergic reaction to a specific type of mosquito.

Is there any point in posting longer posts on Facebook if it's not something inspirational?

I feel like if I post anything over a few words, everyone ignores me. (So about this long, even.)

Re: Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Keep in mind that Facebook has a weird algorithm where sometimes you don't see posts, especially if you don't post often. I've gone to friends' pages wondering where they went and realized I'd missed months of posts.

I do think longer posts get less attention, though, because a lot of people check from their phones or in short spurts anymore. So they may not have as much time to devote to your posts. However, I've seen a lot of longer posts get attention, too.

I usually ignore longer facebook posts because they tend to be either way too braggy. Short of it being an excerpt from a link that got too long, I rarely click on that "read more" link facebook uses for long posts because I feel like I already know what's going to be inside.

And more importantly, people are lazy. Most people just glance at facebook and aren't on it for any deep-dive reading.

If the point is to get attention from everybody, then no, there's no point.

If the point is to just post whatever you're thinking, post what you want and stop getting hung up on the fact that everyone isn't paying attention. You can't make them read your shit any more than they can make you stop posting your shit.

Either way, you need to make peace with your decision.

that's not a very long post, anon.

I'm seconding what the other anon said, weird fb algorithms fuck shit up.

otherwise you can try to write a short synposis at the start if your posts are actually need a read more- like "today my cat puked on me". catch their attention, then elaborate. I've also seen people post a picture with a caption, or answer to their own posts with more details.

Is there any actual point in petitioning for the Bar Association to remove Aaron Persky?

Don't get me wrong, he sounds like a horse's ass, and letting that guy off was disgusting, but I'm pretty sure the Bar Association already knows how pissed people are at them....

Re: Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Sign the recall petition if you're in Santa Clara County, anything else is probably going to be ineffectual.

Re: Question thread

I'm not sure what the bar association could do to remove a judge, so no, there's no point.

I don't know how judges are appointed in that county, but if there's an election to retain or remove, people should put a shit ton of money behind that.

Short answer - no.

Long (like, really long) answer? People don't know what the heck they're talking about when they talk about petitioning the Bar. The Bar is the licensing agency for lawyers - each state and federal district has one. Speaking generally, the Bar collects professional dues and decides who gets to practice law. They also put on classes so that lawyers can pay more money and learn about the updates to law. Licenses can be either suspended or revoked completely. Generally, you get suspended for either not paying your dues or completing your continuing legal education hours or for a number of criminal/civil infractions. The most common infractions are for mismanaging client funds (they take very serious views on it) or substance abuse that interferes with competently representing their clients to the best of their ability. To get your license revoked, you have to do something VERY serious, like straight up embezzle client money or repeated substance abuse issues or defraud your client - one that gets a lot of press is when district attorneys withhold evidence in criminal trials (a la the Duke lacrosse case). In other words, most things that get your license revoked are criminal in nature.

So, while repugnant, nothing Persky did is a violation of law. It's not even careless or ignorant of the law. He was acting as a judge with the full weight of qualified immunity (meaning he can't be punished for things he does, as long as they are within his job description) within the confines of permissible punishment.

And here's the cherry on top - the The State Bar of California can do exactly NOTHING to Persky. He's a judge. They don't even consider him to be a member of the State Bar while he's on the bench (this is to prevent conflicts of interest between lawyers and judges). If people want to petition anybody, it'd be the Commission on Judicial Performance. They are the ones that review judicial misconduct.

The CJP can only *remove* a judge for actions that "constitute willful misconduct in office, persistent failure or inability to perform the judge's duties, habitual intemperance in the use of intoxicants or drugs, or conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice that brings the judicial office into disrepute." That last one might give people hope, but I'd bet it has to be a pattern before they act. Generally, lawyers and judges don't want to act against someone that they might hear cases with/against/in front of every day. It usually requires horrific injustice for a judge to be removed. Now, they can censure him or publicly/privately admonish him, but that does little to nothing to affect him professionally.

Basically, he's not going to stop being a lawyer. He might, however, stop being a judge - not because of the CJP though, but because of a recall through the voters. For all the naysayers (especially lately), democracy occasionally shifts the status quo. He will be recalled, just as Californian voters did to their governor Gray Davis in 2003. So if you live in his voting district and are registered to vote, THAT is the way to remove him - sign that petition and get that asshat recalled! If you don't, then stand back and bask in the warmth of that democratic movement.

Nope, he was voted in and won because he had no opposition, so petitioning the bar does nothing.

Podcast Agent

Does anyone know of a good podcast agent for Android? Somewhere I can subscribe to places through instead of just downloading individual WHM episodes

I haven't tried any others, but podcast addict works great for me. I can even add a folder of MP3s on my device as a "podcast" for things that don't have RSS or podfic.

I haven't written fic in years and yet somehow I'm writing a smutty thing and will probably post it. Where do I go to find betas these days? I know some of you have offered to beta others here before, but I'm not gonna do that because the fandom would make it extremely obvious which named user I am. Which I'm not cool with, because it's embarrassing enough already.

Re: Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-06-12 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
If you're not cool with naming the fandom on here, then I'd suggest trying to find someone on a comm/site that's devoted to your fandom.

It's common in winter time to get the skin on your fingernails to split. I get it every winter, bugs the hell out of me. But now this is the first time I'm starting to get splitting skin in the summer! Seriously it's over 90 degrees and my fingertips hurt. I've googled and it seems dry skin is the culprit, but I can't see how it is. The only thing in my life I can see is different from last summer, is that I'm not using the air conditioner that often.

Does anyone get the skin splitting in summer and can offer any advice? I use gloves to wash my dishes, so it can't be from hand washing. I'm so confused (and my thumb hurts).

Re: Question thread

I don't want to depress you, but IME it's a more common occurrence as I get older. Maybe check that you're not using a ton of soap that dries your skin out, try using gentler bodywashes/soap with cocoa butter, and keep a bottle of hand lotion in the bathroom for applying after you wasn your hands. And make sure you're keeping well hydrated even when you're not active or outdoors.

Re: Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Use an unscented moisturizer on your hands. Keep a small bottle at your desk so you remember to reapply it frequently, and make sure to reapply after washing your hands. Try switching to gentler soaps as well, and wash your hands in cool or lukewarm water, not hot water.
