Who here's getting hyped for RE7?

Who here's already getting anti-hyped for Detroit: Become Human?

Re: Gaming Thread

Ugh, Detroit: Become Human. My best friend is a huge Quantic Dream fan, so I'm not gonna hear the end of it. THE ONLY THING THEY'RE GOOD AT IS FACE CAPTURE.

Re: Gaming Thread

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-06-15 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's David Cage, so they're also great at: needlessly sexualizing female main characters, making incoherent plot twists, inserting random drug/psychology references for shits and giggles, and generally telling a really shitty story with maybe one or two interesting characters if you're really lucky.

Re: Gaming Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, uh... to be honest, I like incoherent drug stories. They don't appeal to me when Cage does them, though. And fuck his shitty gameplay.

I can't be the only one who thinks it's weird

[personal profile] chardmonster 2016-06-16 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
that Detroit apparently has so few Black people.

I'm not going to scream racism because I literally don't think David Cage understands what's weird about this. I think he just sees Detroit as "oui oui that car place." But it's WEIRD.

I like story-driven games like this a great deal, but honestly I'm majorly squicked out by people being treated like objects, and that original short kind of traumatized me a little. So I'm not sure. I might stick to let's plays.

I better see some fucking self-defense in RE7. Leon has already been through not one but TWO city-wide zombie/mutant rampages, plus an entire countryside of parasitic cultists, plus whatever other shit he's been through. And yet he and these other dudes go to a spooky old house in the middle of fucking nowhere and don't think to bring so much as a gun? Maybe RE really HAS gone down the shitter as a franchise if it's joining in on the "I have no hands and I must wank" genre.

Also, Detroit: Become Human seems interesting on its face but it's yet more David Cage jerking himself into a stomachache over his perceived intellect.

Wake me up when The Last Guardian finally comes out.

I wish I had a PS4 to play the demo so I could see what's going on myself. The E3 trailer really didn't give too much insight on how the gameplay is going to work.

It just managed to look really... Silent Hill-ish? That was my takeaway.

Re: Gaming Thread

[personal profile] dethtoll 2016-06-15 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well the trailer was clearly trying to ape PT Demo, but Silent Hill as a franchise has strayed further and further away from its roots over the last 12 years. I look at PT Demo and it's almost unrecognizable from the originals, not just in gameplay but also in presentation. It's like they've lost the subtlety that made the original trilogy so great. So "Silent Hill-ish" could mean anything at this point.

I've heard that there might be some methods of self-defense in RE7, so I'm not completely disinterested. But I'm really sick of Amnesia clones. The only one I even like is SOMA.

Oh, I will say that I got a small smile over the intro to the trailer with the telephone; it reminded me of the hours I spent plugging away at the original House of the Dead.

No way, I'm totally going to play the shit out of Detroit: Become Human. Haters gonna hate.

I have a question. I used to play games way back when (mostly on computer) and I've recently been looking to get back into it. I'm thinking about buying a console and I'm leaning towards PS4 because the only games I know I want to play are anything Star Wars related and people have said Sony has an in with Disney.

However, I've also heard about the kerfuffle with Battlefront and how the main game was only okay but most of it was in the extra downloadable stuff, which people thought was a ripoff. I was considering getting the PS4 with the Battlefront bundle but I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not.

Also, can you download games to the PS4? Like, can you buy stuff on Steam and then play it on PS4 or is that only for stuff on the computer? What other games should I look into getting?

I'd really love to hear other people's opinions since I'm not entirely sure what I should be looking for when I consider getting a console.

You can't buy Steam games and then play them on PS4, no, but you can buy games from the Playstation marketplace and download those to the console.

I don't have a PS4, so I have no actual opinion either way on how they work, but depending on what kind of games you like, I may have suggestions.

Back in the day, I used to like King's Quest and Myst and other puzzle/adventure games. I liked Pokemon and Mario Brothers on Gameboy but the recent Mario Brothers I played made me dizzy/sick. I've played the ATLA movie game on the Wii and that was fun. I also liked Diablo 1 and 2. I'm open to trying new kinds of games. I like story/worldbuilding and characters mostly. I'm not a fan of having to fiddle with the game though (like downloading patches or expansions, etc.) and I'm not a fan of multi-player.

How are you on horror games? As much as I grouse about the state of the genre these days there's still plenty of good ones, not all of them big AAA affairs either (though those are good too.)

Diablo 3 has a PS4 version, since you liked the other two. I've got it for my Xbox 360, and I personally enjoy the hell out of it, though a lot of long-time Diablo fans are disappointed in it, so it's hit or miss. Get the Ultimate Evil edition if you get it, comes with the Reaper of Souls expansion already on the disk (or the 360 version does, unsure if that's a thing for every console release). Has multi-player, but I play it solo and the story is solid, plenty of fun to be had without other people.

Skyrim is getting a remaster for PS4 in the future, and it's a solid game. There's DLC for it, but all of it is optional, so unless you want the extra story or are an achievement whore like I am, you don't need to pick it up.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 were remastered and released for PS4, if you played either/both of those on Playstation 2 back in the day. The remaster includes all the International stuff (dark aeons, etc), so they'll give you a lot of play time to complete everything.

Dark Souls is good if you like to rage at things, but I'm not sure if the first two released for PS4 or are able to be played on it.

Just going through my Steam catalog and seeing what might interest you that also has Playstation releases, you might be interested in Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and The Witcher as well. Only the last Dragon Age and Witcher games have been released for PS4 though, and none of Mass Effect was until the new one comes out next year. I don't know if Playstation has a backwards compatibility system that includes the older ones though, sorry. :(

Buy a PS3. PS4 isn't worth getting yet IMO -- wait for a price drop at least. PS3 has a huge library, plus a large collection of PS1 and PS2 games that you can purchase on PSN. PS4 needs more time to build its library.

And no, you can't buy games on Steam and be able to play them on PS4 -- Steam is PC only. (However, if you buy the PS3 version of Portal 2 it comes with a Steam key and cross-platform play, but that's a major exception.)

I wouldn't buy a PS4 just yet unless there are any games you just have to play right this minute. Wait until the Neo/PS4.5 gets out (no release date yet though), as there will likely be a price drop for the regular one (Or you can get the Neo)

Elder Scrolls

I keep starting Oblivion, closing the first Oblivion gate and then getting pulled away from playing for long enough that I wonder if I should just start over. I *could* probably get back into where I left off (Breaking the Siege at Kvatch), but I just got Skyrim for $8 at my used media place and am wondering if I should just move along to that.

Skyrim is more visually appealing and the level scaling is less horrible, but Oblivion is still a decent game, so it's up to you.

Re: Elder Scrolls

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Play Skyrim.

Oblivion is great if and only if you're playing on a PC with mods to fix the level scaling (and possibly an appearance overhaul). It's a decent game and there's a lot about it I like, but I think Oblivion really works better if you're already familiar with Tamriel. Skyrim and Morrowind are both much more interesting world-buildy games with much better level design and better questlines. Oblivion is pretty bland in comparison.

Replaying Halo with my mate.

Forgot just how fantastic this series was for co-op. Playing Halo Anniversary (all five games in HD, with half of them graphical remakes) and it has to be the best gaming deal on the market.

DISHONORED 2. I'm so excite for new people and world building! It's a bummer the tumblr fandom is mostly ~daud daud daud~ but hoping he's a cameo and not necessarily a part of the new game.

And I'll kill him if I see him in game. He better not be essential.

I'm not thrilled about the voice actor change for the Outsider but the game does look good (all the vertical climbing you'll be able to do alone looks like a great thing).
Fandom-wise: I don't much care about Daud either, but my bigger squick is the Emily/Outsider shipping. I have started a nice block list for that.
