Damned product placement. If only blockbuster Hollywood movies were still free from the stink of commerce and money-making.

The way I deal with it, is that I think: in real life, there would also be brands.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, tbh I find glaring attempts to avoid product placement even more jarring (like propping up objects against laptops, or shots of really bland fake websites), because in real life, people DO use certain ubiquitous brand-name products all the time.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
True, but I imagine not everybody wants to pay licencing fees, so enter the Bland-Name Substitute.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I find that stuff really funny tbh, especially the blatantly fake websites.

But I'm also the person who really enjoys pausing TV shows to try & read any printed text that shows up on screen, so

(I mean, not when I'm watching with other people, just if I'm like streaming something or whatever)

I don't really notice product placement unless it is super-obnoxious and it doesn't bug me much but I can understand it being irritating, especially in movies where it's way more rampant.

This secret just reminds me of when I read the first Twilight book and wondered why Bella's computer took so damn long to boot up and had a million pop up ads.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I see those same brands all day long in stores and restaurants, so it doesn't bother me.

Also, not everything is paid product placement. I worked on a show several years back where our characters had iPhones, but Apple wasn't paying us to use them. It was just the prop department making the decision, and it's a popular, often-used device.

That said, I find the made-up brands to be pretty funny, and I like to look for them in various pieces of media. Heisler Beer... Lariat Car Rental...

There was one show a few years ago that I gave up on because every single episode would have at least one character conspicuously reach for a certain bottled water.

So much product placement for Mac.. If it weren't for tv, I wouldn't know what a Macbook looks like because I don't know anyone who actually owns one. :b

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
There's this episode of L&O: SVU where Benson (I think) picks up some guy's Sketcher and just starts pounding something with it. I can't remember the context, but It was the weirdest product placement ever.

Product placement really only bothers me during blatant talk-ups of features or whenever people get brand-specific where hey normally wouldn't, e.g. "let's take my car" becomes "let's take my Toyota Camry."

Are Macs supposed to be edgy? I thought they were just hipstery.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-18 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I was just thinking of product placement in movies/TV last night when I watched Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and he visits an Apple store with partner. LOL

Then there's "indirect" product placement in anime or manga because of copyright or whatever, like Wacdonald's in Inuyasha.

Heh. There's a Jennifer Westfeldt movie where she's so worried about getting the product placement on screen in one of the scenes she shot first that she keeps raising this packet of McDonald's french fries into the shot to be sure the camera gets it. It's kind of hilarious. In the commentary she says she learned to be more relaxed about it as the shoot went on.

I don't mind brand names and logos appearing so much as how carefully and obviously they are sometimes framed to draw attention to the thing. Like if people are drinking something out of cans and everyone has the logo turned towards the camera all at once and no one is covering it with their fingers. IRL, people drink brand-name beverages from cans all the time so having cans with brand names appear in a movie isn't strange - it's actually realistic. However, real people don't pose with things like that.

What's the green frog thing

The one that kills me was the Audi in Avengers AOU. Hawkeye and Black Widow are in in for ten seconds and it STILL manages to feel like a car commercial.

For me, it's specifically dialogue. I take very close notice of diction and word order, both in real life and in fiction, and actors often speak in a very different way when they're trying to make sure the audience notices the product placement in their dialogue. It's instantly thrown me out of what were supposed to be sensitive scenes. (I remember a bit in The Terminal where one character product places a fast food restaurant while helping a couple reunite. It could easily have worked with different word order, but the way he said it so obviously promoted the restaurant name that all suspension of disbelief was lost.)

(Anonymous) 2016-06-18 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
You might try POI, OP. Not only do they not have product placement, they actually make up fake products when they need to show an actual bottle of soda, e.g., (see "Get Carter" S1E9 and their fake Mexican soda, Mariquito, instead of Jarrito.) Also, they turn products around on the shelves so you can't see the fronts.

Aw, this makes me think of Let's potato chips. (Google it, it's great.)

And I totally understand your frustration but...honestly, it took me a solid minute to even see the product placement in this screencap. I dunno what it is but that shit just flies over my head. (Commercials don't really work on me either, though, so *shrug*)

(Anonymous) 2016-06-18 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
The best product placement ever was on Breaking Bad when they blew up the car.
