Nope, fantasies are generally harmless.

No more than any other fantasy.

Yes.

Sorry, I'd like to change my answer. Strike "yes" and replace with "sometimes."

No, and in fact sometimes can be good. I was very interested in hearing Lou Ferringo talk about the Hulk and power fantasies, and how that helped with being hard of hearing and bullied.

I agree that they can be helpful, but if you accept that they have any impact at all, I think that you have to accept that they can at times be harmful.

Like, there are times when that kind of narrative is enormously useful to hear; there are also times when it can enforce a lot of really malign ideas about how you need to exist in the world and what kind of behavior is appropriate.

Sure, it CAN be harmful, but it's not harmful by default, which the question seemed to imply (as no info except for the actual question was given).

They teach men that they have the freedom to do anything in the world and get away with it.

Sadly that might be true, so we need to not encourage men to test the limits of their power.

We need to teach men that their place in this world comes with consequences, and male power fantasies undermine that.

When men get actual laser eyes and the ability to lift a tank, I'll be worried.

Are AR-15s close enough to laser eyes or do we need to be totally literal?

They already have the freedom to rape women, be found guilty, and spend only 3 months in prison, in protected custody, with full media access.

That's a much scarier super power than laser eyes.

I'd say not inherently. It becomes a problem when it becomes the default, though.

I mean... most writing has some kind of fantasy fulfillment. Whether it's a power fantasy, a sexual fantasy, a romance fantasy or something else totally depends on the genre. That doesn't mean it's limited to being a fulfillment of a fantasy and nothing else, but generally the function of fiction is to play out a concept that is interesting to both reader and author.

The problem arises when you look at a genre and there's nothing but power fantasy after power fantasy with nothing else that actually challenges a reader. That's when you sort of get an expectation that nothing bad can happen and the good guys always win and the good guys are always big brawny MANLY MEN... it's damaging to one's perception of their own masculinity as much as it is somewhat of an othering of men in general.

tl;dr It can be, but doesn't have to be.

Kind of, yeah

That's why we as humans have to do our best to be aware and intentional and tender and all that shit

Key word here "FANTASY"

No, it's not harmful, as long as no one's actually acting like that in real life. Same with any other kind of fantasy.
