Favorite and least favorite fandom?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Which fandom have you most enjoyed, and which fandom has grated your nerves the most?

Re: Favorite and least favorite fandom?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Favorite: Maybe it's revisionist history, but I have a lot of very fond memories of the Lost fandom. There were a shitton of ship wars, but it all felt very secondary to the crazy "do you think Vincent is in league with the Smoke Monster??!?!" theories.

Runner-up: Ringer, which basically had no fandom and at the time was like me, one of my friends I would scream about it, and the Fug Girls' recaps. But it was all amazing.

Least Favorite: Near the end of the second season, the Veronica Mars fandom went from being awesome to unbearable. I think part of that tracked with that third season which was...uneven, to put it politely. But it flipped between the usual "If you don't watch the show and it gets canceled, you are what's wrong with America" and "Wait, I spent all spring trying to get the show saved for this?" plus the first actual ship war the fandom really ever had.

Favorite: Supernatural, way back at the beginning.

Least favorite: Sherlock.

Favorite would be Transformers. I've been there for years and had the most fun, plus I've managed to avoid most of the drama.

Least favorite is Teen Wolf. Yes, it's fun, but the shipping wars have been bloody annoying and the social justice bullshit spills over everywhere.

Favorite: I will always love my Revolution fandom friends. We were super close and everyone was always so nice and friendly. Show was crazy and I totally get why it was canceled, but that didn't make me love the fandom less.

Least favorite: Star Wars, maybe. I love Star Wars I do, but the fans are crazy!! I guess it's because it's such a giant fandom and there's way too much material and age differences that people fight more often and people can be really cruel. I still love parts of the fandom and have just learned to avoid certain parts.

I loved the good old Gundam wing days.

I hate SPN fandom for that stupid appropriation of Orlando shooting gay pride. It's just rediculous and pathetic

Favourite: probably MCU, there's still stupidity in it don't get me wrong but I've found it easy enough to avoid and ignore because it's so large. (And Shadowhunters fandom is alright aside from a couple of eye-roll worthy posts I've seen, but I follow people who don't want to make an issue out of everything so my experience with it is nice and chill atm).

Least favourite: Teen Wolf, like that fandom was ridiculously drama filled when I poked my nose in when I started watching the show and I noped out really quick because I did not want to deal with any of it.

Favorite: MCU because it is so huge.

Least Favorite: Supernatural. It just became a really terrible place as the seasons went on. :(

I'm in a bunch of fandoms, but I'm only ranking ones I actually participated in.

Fave: General Nintendo (not much drama, lots of nice things to see, fans supportive of each other), Gravity Falls (was in a more speculation/investigative side of the fandom, so didn't deal with shipping, but everyone was very nice to each other and just liked hanging out; kind of mixed together with OtGW when it first aired)

Least fave: Digimon (too focused on shipping, too separated and group-based, too difficult to get attention of other fans; seems it's easier to find similar fans to interact with if you're located in Asia or South America, which I'm not), Steven Universe (anyone frequent on here or tumblr probably knows why; I just enjoy the show alone), Pokemon (way too big, hard to become "known" unless you know a BNF, have personally dealt with more drama in this fandom than any other)

Could be better: Undertale. I really feel sorry for Toby. Game has such a great message, and I wish it would have stayed a small fandom, but it attracted a lot of negative attention. If it had gone the route as other beloved indie games, ex. Shovel Knight, Cave Story, Spelunky, etc, we might have seen less... immaturity? It's been overhyped to oblivion, and as a result, a lot of people auto-hate it like with FNAF (which I enjoy privately, for the same reasons as other "bad" fandoms) and other "YouTube bait" games. I'd have liked to have seen more lighthearted interaction between the fans and outsiders, character studies and the like, but instead we have, well, typical preteen fandom elements like rabid shipping, awfully OOC interpretations of characters, owtheedge fanart/fiction, and... undertail.

I just submitted a secret about how much I hate the [portion of the] Song of Ice and Fire fandom [that I've tried hanging around in.]

I found a good community within the Harry Potter fandom and a very enjoyable Nintendo community c. 1998.

fave - fandoms I'm in now
least fave - past fandoms

really though, hated Supernatural because people call everybody "the boys" and also fans seemed idiotic.

my favorite one is Star Trek before the Reboot as the most friendly.

The friendliest fandom I ever found was the old Robin of Sherwood fandom. The 1980s series. We had fun, and filks, and goofy competitions. We had Clannad! It was cool. I was genuinely sad when it faded away.
Here, go watch an episode:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoGAGrBHoOA

The most irritating fandom is the Joss Whedon fandom. I won't specify specific shows (although the way the fans use one in particular, because of the timing and circumstances, is probably the standout), simply because the fans really don't give a rats ass about the shows themselves except for bragging rights. They follow Whedon himself and will savage any criticism and defend everything he does with a rabidness that genuinely makes me a little afraid at times. I just know that if I finally get doxxed and swatted, it will be a Whedonite behind it.

Favorite: Green Lantern: The Animated Series. The fandom as a whole was pretty amazing. I know there were a few people who got a little pissy that Razer/Aya got the most attention, but otherwise there was very little drama.

Least: All the rest? If I had to pick a few of the very bad ones: X-Men (comics), Teen Wolf, Once Upon A Time, Attack on Titan, and GOT.

Favorite: Discworld fandom
If there ever was problem I don't know about it, but I mostly manage to avoid the rabid fans in all my fandoms, with few exceptions

Worst is a draw Teen wolf and Supernatural
They have great fanworks, but the drama is just not worth it

Of ones I participated in:

Favourite fandom: This is probably partly sentimental, as it was my first foray into actual fandom--but The Sentinel (tv show). Mostly on SENAD. It's where I learned about fandom and fanfic and slashfic. But I also learned about the generosity of fans--someone copied and sent me the eps I'd missed on tv (this was 1997--when downloading a picture could take hours) and they'd included fanvids. All on VHS! lol All they charged was postage and the cost of the tape. And overall it was just a very supportive environment. I know there were disagreements and shit, but it mostly wasn't overly vile or nasty. Probably because it was a mailing list? I dunno.

Least fave: The fandom formerly known as Top Gear but now The Grand Tour fandom. I have never seen so many people who refuse to acknowledge their favourite is problematic (aka Jeremy Clarkson). Not that Hammond and May are innocent by any stretch but they're not douchey to the same degree. And anyone who dares criticise him--regardless of whether it's legit or not--tends to get ostracised and treated like THEY are the one who's the problem. And being constantly told that it's just his "schtick"? Yeah. Whatever. I couldn't get over the number of people who defended him after he punched one of the producers. Those same fans felt BBC were in the wrong for not renewing his contract. And there are a lot of these fans who are watching the new new Top Gear and shitting on it. Well, given that they're only interested in CHM hosting it--and not in the cars--why the hell watch it and tear it down? Why not just fucking ignore it.

I'm to the point now I don't consider myself to be part of any fandom because there almost always ends up being drama of one sort or another. So I just watch my shows, read the fic, and flit around the edges of things. I do kinda miss it though.

My favorite by far was Legend of the Seeker. Everyone was fully aware it was a fun campy show, and that carried over to the fandom. And everyone seemed very "ship and let ship" which was nice. I have never been in such a fun and engaging fandom before, and I don't know that I ever will again. I'm so sad the show was canceled and people drifted away.

Lost was an enjoyable fandom too. Mostly for the speculation, but there was a lot of good shipping too.

Least favorite is tough. Because even in the fandoms that I overall didn't like (Supernatural, NCIS at the end, Hannibal a lot of the time), there were pockets of people that were good.

The most fun I had in fandom was my first online fannish experience -- which was Yugi-oh. It did start to get less fun around 2010 (an influx of people whose sole fannish activity seemed to be telling other people their ships were stupid) but it was a lot of fun from 2002-2004. I've also had a low, steady purr of enjoyment from the English-speaking Saint Seiya fandom (which is less than 10% of the fandom overall.)

Least fave? I guess haven't had nearly as much fun in the videogame fandoms I've been in, but for the most part they're smaller than YGO was back in the day, and not nearly as fanwork friendly.

The Tolkien fandom is amazing. Favorite fandom I've ever been in. Generally nice, at least the sections I frequent. Lots of deep thoughts on canon as well as passionate shipping and character love and everything you could possibly want.

Supernatural probably grated me the most just because of second hand embarrassment from the people who bother the actors or the tin hatters.

Favorite: Hot Fuzz is the fandom that motivated me to write again. It was such a small community, but there weren't any ship wars and virtually no drama.

Least favorite: The (BBC) Sherlock fandom. I jumped in just as the crazy people seemed to be taking over, and I just backed away quietly. I'm still friends with a few people I met in the fandom, but I'm not going back in there.

Re: Favorite and least favorite fandom?

Fandom I most enjoyed: Transformers. I've found some of my best friends through it and we're all a bunch of fun nerds who don't like drama. We just like giant robots. I've even met my fiancee through it--and through a ship we just can't get enough of. Also the Food Network fandom because we're all chill and think Alton Brown is awesome and that Bobby Flay needs to lose a little more often.

Fandom that has grated my nerves the most: Oh my dear god the BBC Sherlock fandom please kill me now.

Favorite: Transformers, Metal Gear Solid, and Assassin's Creed. The parts that I hang out in are very cool, and you can actually have intelligent discussions about pairings and characters without it devolving into ship wars or burning you at the stake because you DAR not like OTP!

Least Favorite: I've never been in it, but Steven Universe seems extremely scary, and I don't want to go anywhere near it.

One of the best was the Havemercy fandom in its heyday. It's pretty dead now/the people I knew all left and the last books weren't great either, though.

One of the worst: Nightvale.

Favourite fandom: Card Captor Sakura. Blissful, probably the only non-wanly fandom I've been in.

Least favourite: Forever and ever Harry Potter, every part of it but especially the Drarry parts. How that fandom hasn't incinerated itself into obscurity yet I'll never know but it needs to get a move on that.

Re: Favorite and least favorite fandom?

Funnily enough, I was talking with one of my friends about how much I really enjoyed Goldeneye fandom on LJ. The movie had been out for 10 years at the time, so it wasn't a new shiny thing. Everybody was adult, we respected differences of opinion, we were all there because we shipped James Bond/Alec Trevelyan. Everybody was supportive and eager to read each other's fics. Because it was a small fandom, every fic was read and appreciated.

Least favorite: Supernatural fandom. Take all the above, and reverse it.
