Re: "Trophy for participation"

I don't know what made millennials so entitled and such perpetual victims, but I don't think it was participation trophies. I think it has more to do with their parents and teachers acting like they were innocent, fragile little glass angels, wanting to protect them from everything, insisting their child is always right, etc.

OP

I can't say that I ever had this experience, either.

Are you a millenial, by the way?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2016-07-15 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you go to a college or university with a Bias Response Team?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2016-07-16 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I went to the University of California, Santa Cruz, ie what someone who believes all millennials are spoiled brats would dub the Liberal Hippie Loser Academy, and all I can say is a what? I mean, I can infer a general definition, but it's nothing that I've ever heard of, and I'm a millennial, albeit an older one.

Re: OP

Yep, there is a bias response team at UCSC. They were mentioned in this article: https://newrepublic.com/article/132195/rise-bias-response-teams-campus.

At University of California, Santa Cruz, a student filed a bias incident complaint that a single poster advertising a college “mafia” game was “extremely offensive to me as an Italian American woman” and “could result in harassment of Italian American students on campus”; the poster was removed.

Apparently these administrative teams are bombarded by complaints like these on US college campuses. This is one reason why millennials are regarded as perpetually oppressed victims.

What do you think that millenials do that makes them "entitled perpetual victims"?

Re: "Trophy for participation"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-15 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The endless whining about how victimized and oppressed they are?

Re: "Trophy for participation"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-15 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think that they are incorrect about victimization and oppression, or that they're wrong to talk about it

Re: "Trophy for participation"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-15 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they have no clue what actual oppression looks like.

Re: "Trophy for participation"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-15 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
In what respect do they - in general - see things as oppressive that are not at all oppressive or bad?

Particularly, where do you think this goes beyond teenagers being idiots into something more genuinely serious? And keeping in mind that the existence of a worst form of oppression does not eliminate lesser forms - it's not like lynching is fine because, well, at least there's no more slavery.

Because, like, I'll definitely agree that there are some times when people are wrong about things, but saying that it's a general trait of all the things an entire generation cares about is a really, really strong claim.

You'd just argue with any example I could give you, and then other people would come along and call me names, so I'm bored now. You win, g'night.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-15 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, goodbye, then. Sorry if I hurt you by not agreeing with your positions. Maybe you just need to learn that the world can't protect you from everything, and toughen up about people calling you names.

"You'd just argue with any example I could give you"

lol

sorry you don't just get to automatically be right because you said the words

Re: "Trophy for participation"

Like most complaints about millennials, this is really something that happens in every generation. There have always been parents like that, but there have also always been parents who aren't.

OK, well, I grew up with metal playgrounds, so.

Re: "Trophy for participation"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-16 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
DA So did I? And I walked past three playgrounds and a park with metal structures when I was out with the dog just today. Social media makes it seem like there are a lot more people caterwauling about insignificant things than there actually are. There were just as many dumbasses in other eras, they just weren't as audible/visible.

Re: "Trophy for participation"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-16 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, I haven't seen a metal playground in YEARS. In my city, they removed them from all our parks, schools, restaurants, etc.

Re: "Trophy for participation"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Are you American? They removed the rickety stuff but the bars on swings and the roundabout are all clearly metal. I struggle to see the logic behind removing them unless they were really old and had jagged edges and stuff. Plastic or wood can be just as dense and would be just as likely to cause injury.

Re: "Trophy for participation"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-16 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm American. What I usually see looks like this...

http://www.justfuninflatables.com/Upload/PicFiles/2011.9.7_2.53.31_9976.jpg

But you're right, now that I take a closer look, there is some metal there. But I never see any metal monkey bars, climbers, swingsets, slides, etc.

I'm American and powder-coated metal playground equipment is all I ever see. It's the wood and concrete playgrounds of my childhood that are rare.

Re: "Trophy for participation"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-16 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
There's literally no advantage to having metal playgrounds and they literally cause actual real physical injuries to people though

Also, the cause of that is probably less overly-protective parents and more overly-litigious society. I mean, I'm willing to defend it, I think it's a positive change, but.

Re: "Trophy for participation"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-16 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
lol what. are you saying we should actively make life more dangerous for kids or something?

Re: "Trophy for participation"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-16 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Please tell me you're joking.

Re: "Trophy for participation"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-16 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
No, you tell me that. Because you're suggesting that we coddle children and treat them like fragile glass angels and your evidence is the invention of safer equipment for them to play with. Like okay grandpa, back in your day you had to go uphill both ways, we know, but these days we have a higher life expectancy.

Re: "Trophy for participation"

(Anonymous) 2016-07-16 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, kids were dying left and right on playgrounds in the 80s.
