I have almost finished a 20,000 word monster. It is 100% complete self-indulgence, 20,000 words of me torturing my favorite characters and pouring angst upon their angst.

The fandom is dead, there are no other fics for this pairing.

My question: do I post it on AO3 or do I just keep it to myself?

POST IT

Unless not getting any response at all is likely to suck out the joy for you, in which case keeping it to yourself would be fine! But you never know who might be out there pining for angsty fic about your faves, and posting can feel really satisfying and good at the end of a long project.

I'd stay post it: you never know who will come looking for fic for what they think is a dead fandom and be glad to find it? Maybe they'll even like torturing the same characters as you do!

I'm in the same boat. Post it anyway. You'd be surprised. People actually come out of the woodwork every once in a whIle to have fun with you!

Post it!

As long as you're okay with it, go for it! I always love stumbling upon fics for fandoms long dead.

I'm in the very beginning stages of writing a book (??!/! ), and I just finished a draft of a chapter/part of a chapter/mini chapter/it's very early days what am I doing. I wrote over 5k words this week, which feels like a little and a lot at the same time.

Beta

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Can anyone beta a fic of mine? It's 14K in a tiny fandom but I'm only looking for SPAG and some help with summery, warning, etc. I am unfortunately coming up on a deadline and I'd just really like a second pair of eyes to catch any major issues before I post it.

I'm trying to write something involving dress ties used as bondage makeshift ropes because the idea of it was fun. Problem is, working out peg-A-into-slot-B-and-tie-C-over-peg-D details do not interest me at all.

Re: Writing Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-30 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that pain

Skip to the fun stuff!! Gloss over pegs and ties and focus on sensations, and orgasms, and what everybody's thinking. If you're bored and frustrating writing it, your reader will be bored and frustrated reading.

How do you motivate yourself for the "boring" parts in fanfic? I.e. the stuff that is sort of needed for the story to stick together but doesn't really involve your favorite characters, tropes or situations?

I find a way to fit the stuff I'm interested in writing into the necessary stuff.

A) look for any way to cut it out/boil it down to a comment someone makes/jump over the exposition and let the reader connect the dots

B) if you have to write the "boring" stuff, find something fun to weave into it. Like, if I'm writing a fic and I know two characters I don't really care a lot need to have a conversation to advance the plot, I'd think about putting them in an insanely hot room to have it, so I'm writing about the conversation but also about how stupid hot it is and how pissed off and sweaty they are and how Character A is thinking about breaking a window to get some fresh air and Character B wants to just be done with this talk so they can strip down. That's a silly example, and it's probably a lazy trick, but the general idea of making the "boring" stuff more fun to write by adding another layer to it usually works for me.

Either spice it up if you can justify it (can a fun character come along?) or just motivate yourself with the fun stuff you get to write later?

You should listen to me, clearly, because I'm great at writing. Having written nothing but academic work and some porn in months. :P

I'm writing a story for an old(ish) fandom. Problem is, the show has been rebooted as a new kids show and what I've written is... well, filthy porn.

I feel kind of awkward posting it now.

I'm currently 13k words into a story I've been working on this past month. I can't seem to keep my focus on one scene or chapter though, which is very unusual for me. I'm a very chronological writer most of the time, but now I'm just all over the place. I think it's quite interesting to write like this, and quite comfortable really as I can just work on any random scene that pops into my mind.

And can I say how much I love Google Docs? I've never used it until recently, but it's so handy to have my documents synced up on my phone, PC and iPad! Like, yesterday I got an idea for a scene while out on a walk and wrote around 500 words on my phone while still walking, and could then just continue the scene where I left off when I got back home to my PC. It's also been great when I've gotten ideas in bed, as I use my phone as my alarm so it's always within reach and I can just write something down quickly before putting it away again. Love it!

I'm editing one of my short stories from 2010 for a magazine, because it fits their theme very well. back then I considered it one of the best piecess I had written. It still holds up, but it feels very... naive?
like it could be the story board of an overly sentimental animation short.

I stuck an END at the bottom of a story I desperately hope to get into an anthology last night. I've been having a super hard time writing lately (novel edits last year broke something inside me), so that felt really good.

Of course, now I have to edit it into something that doesn't suck, but, really, the hard part's over. I'm one of those weirdos who likes editing.

There's a writer's group meetup in my area but I think you have to come prepared with some of your writing and everything I have is old and crappy, so I was going to spend this weekend working on something new but all I managed to get done was...well an outline of sorts, I guess you could call it. So I dunno I might try again tomorrow.

Re: Writing Thread -- or rant, whatever works.

I had just finished a play review to post on my blog after at least a week of slaving late nights over it. I was ambivalent about the show I watched because while I didn't love parts of it, I could tell what the playwright was going for and overall its intended message was important. Because of that, I really struggled on how I'd write my review because I didn't want my dislikes to be too in-your-face. Anyway, I finally got the review all together, and all I had to do was replace a placeholder graphic in my layout with the pic I wanted in their.

I accidentally deleted the last three paragraphs of the review. Probably the meatiest, most substantial part of he piece. And the blog platform I use doesn't have a way to call back previous saves, so that part of my work was just all gone, poof! I was so upset I probably would've cried. So now I'm trying to rewrite the ending of my piece and it doesn't sound anywhere near like I want it to match the content and tone of the original paragraphs, and I'm just so disappointed. I want to be done with this dumb review already! I was having a hard enough time trucking it out as it was, and I hate I basically have to do it partially over.

So: any of you have stories where you lost writings or ideas for things to write? How did you deal?
