How do you motivate yourself for the "boring" parts in fanfic? I.e. the stuff that is sort of needed for the story to stick together but doesn't really involve your favorite characters, tropes or situations?

I find a way to fit the stuff I'm interested in writing into the necessary stuff.

I'll try, but with at least part of it that won't work.

A) look for any way to cut it out/boil it down to a comment someone makes/jump over the exposition and let the reader connect the dots

B) if you have to write the "boring" stuff, find something fun to weave into it. Like, if I'm writing a fic and I know two characters I don't really care a lot need to have a conversation to advance the plot, I'd think about putting them in an insanely hot room to have it, so I'm writing about the conversation but also about how stupid hot it is and how pissed off and sweaty they are and how Character A is thinking about breaking a window to get some fresh air and Character B wants to just be done with this talk so they can strip down. That's a silly example, and it's probably a lazy trick, but the general idea of making the "boring" stuff more fun to write by adding another layer to it usually works for me.

That is actually quite useful, thanks!

Either spice it up if you can justify it (can a fun character come along?) or just motivate yourself with the fun stuff you get to write later?

You should listen to me, clearly, because I'm great at writing. Having written nothing but academic work and some porn in months. :P

It's basically porn with a plot, tbh. So these are the non-porn bits.

Sneak a mundane sounding kink into it :P

It's entirely possible to do porn with a good plot, but it requires a lot of care and interest in the non-porn parts. I'd go so far as to say that if you couldn't replace the sex with nonsexual scenes and still have a functional, readable story, it's more efficient not to bother with non-porn scenes.

I'm not saying to give up on the story, mind you. Just look back on why you decided to have a plot in the first place. What interested you enough that you wanted to write a continuous plot about it?

I write the stuff in ordef of interest write the scenes i'm looking forward to first. Usually it helps me write the less interesting parts.

Just realizing i should try applying this to original fics.

Boring to write; boring to read. Without knowing the specific scene, I can't give specific advice on it, but it's a capital mistake to assume you have to be boring at some point.

Speaking personally, I focus in on how the characters are saying their information and what that says about their personalities. What traits and tics do they convey?
