I'm not anti piracy but yeah there's a big difference from pirating the $60 game from EA and pirating a game from some just-as-poor-as-you indie dev while demanding more games from them, for free.

Yes, I agree. I mean, maybe not morally - but you know your impact will be bigger. i'm not opposed to pirating, but I even try to do things like buy cd's for beginning artists I like, because I know they need it.

Yeah, you have to monetarily support the products you want more of. If you don't, it is only your (and people like you) fault that there is not more of that product.

It sure does sound like some skewed priorities. :(

Yeah, I'm not exactly a saint when it comes to pirating tv shows and such but it's kind of messed up to download games from tiny indie developers without paying for them. A lot of people act like they're entitled to play any video game they want and just don't care that they're fucking over people who are probably in similar financial situations as themselves. They're not exactly sticking it to The Man here

I once saw a pay-what-you-want sale on an indie game bundle, minimum of one cent, all proceeds directed to charity. Someone pirated the bundle so folks wouldn't have to pay one measly cent.

To play devil's advocate, some people from less-developed countries (and even people in well-developed ones) have no way to pay anything online, even if they do have the funds and would be willing to pay even more.

It's not a matter of not wanting to or being too poor, it's a matter of not having a debit card or credit card or paypal account and there being no other way to pay.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
+1, when I was living in my parents' country, I couldn't use any of the regular payment methods because of US sanctions. Now I buy things.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
1. You can get a friend with Paypal to buy it for you.
2. You can go without buying the game, because it's a game and not a necessity like food or water.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
I believe it. People are fucking pathetic. I'm a $1 donor to most Humble Bundles (I'll pay more if money goes to Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontiers) and I get a good amount out of the deal. Why steal from charity? Fucking humans...

I was gonna say, you're giving some very specific examples there.

I'm more likely to take a chance on an indie game (only disliked one. Nobody get The Isle. It's empty and boring).

With big brand expensive games is far cry, I'll download before buying. Blame fable 3. I took a chance and now I have an expensive paperweight I can't even replay because the stupid Windows log in thing is defunct. Fuck fable 3.

Have you tried calling customer support? Both for the game and for the computer?

Just pay the dollar. It's not going to kill you. I'm pretty damn broke myself, but I can still afford to shell out a dollar to show my support for developing developers.

Plus, most indie developers are literally two people, a computer and Blender/Unity. They're not connected to any industry, so you're not making any kind of statement by pirating their game. It's not like, say, Ubisoft, who probably doesn't even notice that your $60 is missing, because they make millions a year.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Hubby supports indie patreons (mod makers, mostly). We're not exactly swimming in money, so it's only a few dollars a month, but he's gotten personal messages from people who are thankful for that small support.

It really does matter.

Lol remind of my friend who apparently was a big fan of Undertale and it came up that she had never actually played the game, just watched a lets play. Fine, whatever.

But when I asked that, if she liked it so much, why didn't she just buy the game? It was only 10 dollars. She responded that "10 dollars is SOOooOOO much money" and how she couldn't throw that kind of money away! It was just too expensive!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah seriously. I'm a cheap poor college student and even I think $10 is a good deal for a game, especially one like Undertale where you put 20+ hours into it.

She doesn't want it that bad. Assuming your friend doesn't live in a third world country, earning ten dollars for a one time purchase is not hard. Mowing one lawn would cover it 3x over.

I have a few games that I love but only watched playthroughs for but that's mostly because I simply can't get them/play them (not the right console, no affordable localisation or I can't play them because they give me intense motion sickness). But if they were cheap on steam, I would buy (and in fact have bought) them. With indie titles, especially those that mean a lot to you, there's really no excuse considering how cheap they are.

I feel the same way about indy comics.

There was one indy artist whose house got wrecked by a natural disaster (flood, I think), and he and his family were desperately trying to scrape up money because you know, HOUSING, and people were pirating his art because you know, not like dude needed money or anything.

So infuriating. (And I've encountered people like that too.)

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm ok with piracy to use as a sample, since a lot of games don't have demos and not everyone can use every type of gameplay. But then you should buy the damn game if you're down with playing it.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-03 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
You're right and your friend needs to grow up.
