Re: Niantic shut down pokemon hunting sites

It's cheating the game, because finding Pokemon on your own is meant to be part of the game.

You aren't competing against everyone else. You're independently playing the game. It doesn't matter if everyone else can access PokeVision, it's cheating.

You aren't competing against everyone else.

Yes...you are? There are teams and gyms?

And "cheating" is an entirely meaningless concept unless you're talking about giving one or more people an undue advantage in a competition. If the game worked the way you claim it does - as a completely independent game with no interaction - then your claim that it's cheating would make even less sense.

I don't agree that it was cheating but I do think it's possible to cheat on a personal challenge, so I think they're making sense even if I don't agree with them.

I mean sure it's possible to cheat on a personal challenge, but I don't think PokeGo is a personal challenge. (Not sure if you are trying to make that specific claim or not, sorry!)

I was just disagreeing with this particular sentence of yours: "And 'cheating' is an entirely meaningless concept unless you're talking about giving one or more people an undue advantage in a competition."

Ok, that is fair, you're right.

Then how do you feel about people tell their friends of the best places to find certain pokemon in their home town? And this is BEFORE they knew about PokeVision, mind.

Would that considered "cheating?"

I don't think it's cheating because in the regular Pokemon games, NPCs would tell you where to find stuff all the time.

Exactly.

The teams and gyms affect your gameplay... how?

And no, it isn't meaningless. Niantic is selling things like Incense and Lure Modules for real money, things people theoretically use to help them go catch Pokemon. By knowing exactly where the Pokemon are, you are not only reducing the need for these items, you are not playing the game as it is intended.

I don't see how you can even argue with a straight face that it isn't cheating. If I use hacking codes to make certain Pokemon appear when I play the Game Boy Pokemon games, that's cheating- without any sense of competition. You're talking about a very similar concept - the ability to get to Pokemon without having to find them yourself, when walking around finding Pokemon is LITERALLY the concept behind the game.

Not sure what you even mean by this question?? They are part of the gameplay, just as much as walking around and finding Pokemon, and evolving them, and all the other aspects. To some people they are the main reason they play!

(It occurs to me some context is missing here. This is a tangent to the "cheating" aspect of the thread; it's me pointing out that PokeGo has a competitive aspect as well as a personal aspect.)

Incense and Lure Modules just cause more Pokemon to exist than previously existed. People have still been using them. Not gonna change the fact that there's a Pikachu or something else rare on their radar that they can't find.

"Cheats" refer to hacks or codes you an put into a game to get a result outside the normal parameters, but I really do not think it's "cheating" in the moral sense of the word when someone does something like that in a handheld Pokemon game. If that's the way they want to play, it's on them. (Note: I'm not talking about people who use hacks to get better competitive Pokemon. That's definitely cheating.)

This. Someone who uses a Pokemon tracking site doesn't have any advantage over someone who stumbles across a Pokemon when it comes to actually catching it. They have the same chance of having the Pokemon break out and escape. I used Pokevision to track down three Pokemon the other day and I only caught one of them because the other two broke out and ran away. I really don't see how that's "cheating" in any sense of the word.

It absolutely is, because you have an increased chance of catching rare Pokemon (or gathering Pokemon for evolution candies). More than that, it isn't how Niantic intends users to play the game.

Then tell that to the people who were out and about and discovered the best places to catch certain pokemon. By telling others where to find said pokemon (these peopel having not used PokeVision), they are "cheating" just by daring to open their goddamn mouths.

Seriously, you need to shut the fuck up.

but you don't have an increased chance...? you have exactly the same chance as you would if you'd walked by it when it spawned.

i mean, if you want to talk about having an increased chance of gathering pokemon for candies, people who live in cities have a huge advantage over everyone else. my friends from big cities are already over level 20 just from playing casually because there are so many pokemon and pokestops around them.

They're literally just tracking the Pokemon in a more direct way than the weird way the game gives you to do it. And again it's a program that everybody has (well, had) access to. If you can afford a smart phone and a data plan, you can access pokevision.com.
