While I don't really care if an adult reads primarily YA fiction, if they have a chip on their shoulder about it I immediately assume a number of unflattering things about them.

I'm so over people making sweeping statements about any kind of book. I read a ton of literary fiction and I have never once read one about a white man having a mid-life crisis even though supposedly that's what they're all about. I've read all kinds of YA that has nothing to do with vampires or love triangles. ASOIAF is not the only fantasy out there with any kind of moral complexity. I'm just tired of it.

Harry Potter

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly think a lot of the fans who complain every time JKR says something, how much it sucks that there's a play, etc. are just upset that Harry/Draco isn't canon and that Ron and Ginny aren't dead. A million years later.

I don't mean people who just don't like some of her backstory - I don't like some of her Pottermore stuff, and the play isn't terrible, but it's flawed. However, there's that, and there's "well, she's ruined my Hermione/Greyback fic." THAT WAS NEVER GOING TO BE CANON, so why do you care?

Aaaa yes agreed so hard.

I really like the people that I tend to talk about Harry Potter with, they're really smart and cool, but at times, it just gets frustrating how much of the discussion is predicated on the belief that Ron was boring and Ginny was a bad romantic character. And it's just this, like, totally reflexive, assumed belief, and I don't share it, and it is just very wearing.

I like Ron and Ginny. I like Harry and Ginny's relationship. I don't mind Ron and Hermione getting together. It's fine.

So "cursed child" evidently has shipping potential, which some people are wondering if it's yet another wink-wink-nudge-nudge Dumbledore thing.

AND IT'S 2016 AND THE REST OF THE FANTASY FICTION WORLD DOES LGBTQ BETTER THAN SLASHY SUBTEXT ALREADY!

I think there is no point in watching "classics", because every classic that had a unique way of doing things has been copied mercilessly by now

i.e. I was really bored by pulp fiction because I've seen the like countless times already. it's not unique anymore, sorry...

I was bored by Pulp Fiction in 1994.

Never get tired of Gone With the Wind, though!

My unpopular opinion is that I don't care about uniqueness at all.

But I will also watch the same thing over and over and over. I can be worse than any little kid about that. So watching things that are different but similar is really no big deal.

I think I'm just weird. I also don't get tired of songs no matter how many times I hear them. I can't even get the concept of liking a song and then not liking it after hearing it too many times to make sense in my head because that's just not how my brain works at all.

I think people should watch/read what they want. I don't think anyone should feel they have to watch or read a "classic" just because it is considered a classic. They should watch or read things that sound interesting or are things they want to watch or read. If they think they will enjoy a classic, sure watch it. Otherwise, don't.

Re: Unpopuar opinions

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
People should like what they want. And I do think that there are some things that are regarded as classics where what you say is pretty much true - we just can't access the way that people reacted to the text originally, because the innovative features aren't innovative anymore, and the rest of it is sort of whatever.

But I do think there are good reasons to read classics.

First, many of them can be very entertaining, or emotionally affecting, or whatever. You can just, you know, want to read them.

Second, it may be the case that although the techniques that the classics used became standard, the classic is still the best example of those techniques. For instance, Proust is someone I would point to here - I don't think anyone has really gotten to the same point with the kinds of things that he was doing.

Third, it may be the case that the way those techniques were used was distinctly different in the classics, or that they were combined with other techniques that we nowadays wouldn't combine them with, or that there was something particularly distinctive in the connection between the techniques and the time or the culture that you won't find in other works. I can't think of an example and I'm bored of writing this post.

It's great people love Pokemon Go and that they're getting exercise and all that. But I just DON'T.FUCKING.CARE. I'm also tired of it being injected into every single conversation since it's the trendy geek reference of the moment.

Re: Unpopuar opinions

This is the great thing about being old. No one mentions Pokemon to you because they automatically assume you don't know what it is or don't care.

I think porn is immoral.

Re: Unpopuar opinions

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it is immoral in theory, but the way it is done today is absolutely immoral. It is sexist and exploitative and awful.

Re: Unpopuar opinions

I think gay and lesbian romance fiction should not be written by anyone the opposite gender of the protagonists, though I make an exception if it's someone who's trans writing. I can't say anything for lesbian fiction but I get really angry looking at all the gay male romance books and seeing female authors or people who I think are female writing. I don't want to read about gay men through a woman's lens. Ever. It's our space, not yours.

Never mind that the gay written fic I've found isn't all that great either. I mean, when the smut on Nifty.org feels more correct than a non-self-published professional novel...

Lesbians, is it easier for you to find good F/F romance fiction?
