Why do you so badly want to remain friends with someone who sounds like a jerk you had few things/nothing in common with?

The more times you vote Republican, the larger your horn grows.

Good to know.

Also if you vote third party, you're throwing away your vote & letting "them" win (whoever "they" are in this case).

Fun times

Well in a two party system that is actually kind of true; one of the myriad reasons two party systems are shitty and broken and borderline undemocratic.

We The North manage to keep three-four reasonably successful parties afloat at any given time, but the Liberals and Conservatives are the two mains, for sure. But supposedly we're getting electoral reform to remove our dated, broken first-past-the-post system in the next couple of years.

But we vote for parties rather than a leader. The party itself picks the leader.

In Canada we have a four party system (used to be five until Harper, comic book villain that he is, merged the two right leaning/conservative parties into one), but it's basically the left/liberal side being split 3 ways against one party that represents the conservatives. It's such a broken, unfair system that it makes me long for America's two party system tbh.

you joke but there's no part of their contemporary platform within the last couple decades that isn't horrible, at least when it comes to social issues.

You, on the other hand, sound very tolerant and open-minded.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-05 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Tolerate my intolerance!

Look, it's fine for you to say "the other side is made up of horrible, horrible people" but it's reductionism at its worst and everyone does it. They literally just decide the other side is horrible bc "they hate gays/women/progress" or "they support killing babies" or whatever you believe. You put it the way that makes your opponents (who believe differently) in the worst possible way. You've decided that everyone is divided into two categories of politics (or is some weirdo in a third party etc)., and they are "good" or "evil." It ignores the fact that people are complicated, we're more insulting people than actually discussing beliefs when we do that...and NOTHING CHANGES. Because to the Dems the Republicats are evil warmongers who hate teh gays, and to Reps the Demogratz are evil babykillers who want to destroy the economy.

NOTHING CHANGES.
