The Great Wall trailer

Directed by the same person who did Hero and House of Flying Daggers. So if nothing else, it will be visually stunning.

Oh shit! I loved Hero and have Flying Daggers on my DVR.

I am so put off by Damon I may just not see this until I read some reviews and hope that the Chinese actors have prominent roles.

I really wish they'd made different casting choices. Because this movie looks amazing, but I'll feel to guilty if I watch it.

Why? It is Chinese film with a Chinese director and Chinese producers. Everyone in the decision process for choosing cast is Chinese.

But, why is Jason Bourne in ancient China.

Because the Chinese love Matt Damon.

It's actually Will Hunting's identical grandson!

If Zhang Yimou wants to cast Matt Damon in his historical fantasy epic then I will... shut up and watch, because I don't argue with friggin' Zhang Yimou. Who'd you think you're talking about, Shyamalan??

I mean, I don't think Flowers of War needed Christian Bale, but that's mostly because he was distracting as hell and his role could've been played by any white guy.

I didn't know it was the same director and that the crew was Chinese. All I know about the film is from a clickbait headline about whitewashing.

Chinese film with a Chinese director and Chinese producers. Somehow equals...whitewashing. THOSE DAMN WHITEWASHING CHINESE!

In all fairness, there's a bigger issue here. Asians are severely underrepresented in American media. While it's not inherently wrong that a white person stars in a movie about China, how many roles get to star Chinese people that are about anywhere other than China? For that matter, how many big-name Asian actors still get roles in Hollywood? Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan do little to none these days. If Asians can't even star in big Hollywood movies about China... when do they get to star, or even feature.

Even with Hollywood money fueling the project, I would hesitate to characterize a film helmed primarily by Chinese talent to be representative of American media.

Except that this isn't really American media? It's a Chinese production, Zhang Yimou is a super-famous Chinese director, and yes, there are Chinese actors featured and starring.

Zhang Yimou: "Matt Damon is not playing a role that was originally conceived for a Chinese actor," he added. "The arrival of his character in our story is an important plot point. There are five major heroes in our story and he is one of them — the other four are all Chinese."
