I'm more tired of people complaining about this than the thing itself.

You want to complain about tropes? I agree with you. Forcing tropey uke/seme bullshit onto characters they don't apply to is bullshit. 100%.

But trying to push a moral superiority onto your preferred type of porn is equal levels of bullshit. Writing Bob sticking his dick in Joe's ass is not "not considering switches exist in real life," jesus. Some people simply like thinking about "Joe getting fucked" in particular, not "Joe having sex" or "Joe sticking his dick anywhere." Sometimes it turns out a whole damn lot of people like thinking about "Joe getting fucked" in particular, not "Joe having sex" or "Joe sticking his dick anywhere."

TL;DR: It's porn. Own you want more of what you like to fap to instead of trying to make everyone else wrong for not providing what you like.

Correct thread this time.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish the people complaining that there needs to be more switches and that switches get erased would listen to themselves and stop ignoring that people don't even switch in the same ways!

Some people switch off regularly with the same sex partner. Others who call themselves switches do so because sometimes they look at one person and want to fuck them, and other times they look at another person and want to get fucked by them. Which doesn't mean they switch off with that person, it means they adapt to whoever it is. That's never considered by the people demanding more switching in the same fic or relationship, funny enough.

I've never heard the term pillow biter before and I really really don't like it. I've been reading slash almost 15 years.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only heard pillow biter as a derogatory term for gay people.

The only times I've ever heard it, it's being used as a slur. And I have no idea where it's coming from either, because pillows taste disgusting.

I've been on both sides, where I grew tired of reading about a character always being in a specific role and went looking for the opposite, but I've also liked pairings where I genuinely preferred a certain sexual dynamic for whatever reason, and didn't feel the need to stray from it. So I guess it depends on the specific characters and their relationship, because while I completely understand the frustration that comes from feeling that what you're reading is too “samey”, I also think it often comes from a place of pure aesthetics and don't feel like it's hurting anything.

And I don't believe the majority think that switching isn't a real, valid thing, as much as it doesn't personally appeal to them (at least in this context). (It does to me, again, with certain pairings.)

Wasn't last year the majority of secrets people complaining about The Holy Church of Switching forcing the idea that all Real People switched in Real Life and preferring to top or bottom was terrible and wrong and meant you were a bad person?

I generally headcanon characters as switchy and write them as such, but I'm perfectly willing to admit that it's because I find it HOT.

I don't see switching so much in one-shots, because it's a little hard to cram that into a single fic(unless it's really long) but I do see it in longer E rated fic in most of my fandoms.

But I find it hard to give a shit either way tbh.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
People are perfectly welcome to keep their top/bottom preferences; more power to you! But when they complain about mine in comments to my fic, that makes me mad. Hey, top/bottom inquisition: this is what the backbutton is for!

I find it amusing fandom invented A/B/O. It's like it's come full circle and back into terrible repurposed yaoi tropes, only now with self lubricating buttholes (that apparently smell and taste like cinnamon) and mpreg.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-08 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Mmmm, I'm going to have to disagree with you, OP.

I don't mind switching, but only if it makes sense to me in my head. (Which is usually based off of a couple's dynamics.) For one pairing that I used to write a lot for, I could definitely see them switching (and used to write it!) due to their personalities and the dynamics of their relationship. But for my current fandom darling, it's not so much like that. Due to how I see the characters, I can mostly only see one of the pairing topping. The other one might top every once in a rare while, but only if certain circumstances present themselves.

So I can see why you're complaining that there's not enough switching, but it would be nice for you to also see why there's not a lot of switching. Also, like someone else pointed out above, there's a reason why a lot of those stereotypes are stereotypes, and it's not due to slash fangirls.

I actually saw the opposite of this a lot, when I was still somewhat active in the HP fandom. The Harry/Draco corner in particular has lots of holier-than-thou switching advocates, who seem to write their fic with the help of spreadsheets to make sure their fics are precisely 50-50 for each partner in the top/bottom category.

Even funnier were only the self-satisfied circle jerk 'discussions' about the fact that, of course, every fictional male character ever and every real gay or bisexual man in existence is always 100% pro-switching, all the time and with every partner, because that's natural and normal.

Aww, thinking about that actually made me nostalgic now. Oooh, I should go look, if I can dig up the password to my old LJ account again.

You sound like me complaining about yaoi's seme/uke dynamic back when I was in high school. I still prefer the characters to switch, tbh, but I no longer post rants or secrets about it...
