"Motherhood is a job!"

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair point or annoying?

Re: "Motherhood is a job!"

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's context. If it's to point out what motherhood involves, fine. If it's to tell your friend who just got off a twenty hour shift and barely has time to see her family anymore that she doesn't know what "tired" means, kindly STFU.

But I also think most people who say it know the difference.

Fair fucking point! The hell is this question???

Childcare and child raising is a job. Giving birth to a child and nothing further, which is technically being a mother, isn't.

Which do you mean by motherhood there?

Re: "Motherhood is a job!"

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh, I'd say labor and late pregnancy put enough of a strain in a person's body that it's fair to consider those a job.

But I think what you mean is that if you are not taking care of the kids, it's no longer a job, and I agree on that one.

It's annoying in the sense that many are mothers AND have a job - that being said, I would not want the extra workload of being a Mum.

Re: "Motherhood is a job!"

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this doesn't make any sense if you're saying it to a working mother who has two jobs, work out of the home then work at home also

Sure, but so's fatherhood.

in the context of a stay at home mother or father then yeah, I guess it's pretty much a job especially considering that it's something that people who work in day cares or as nannies get paid to do

(Anonymous) 2016-08-07 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Motherhood is a lifestyle choice. A job is something pays for the upkeep of that lifestyle. STFU.

Pretending that being a stay at home mom is the same thing as working a full time job WHILE being a mom is very silly.

That said, motherhood is hard work! And depending on culture and societal position etc., not to mention obvious things like how many children, if any children are ill/disabled etc., it can be a great deal more or less work.

Fair point because we live in a fucked up society that doesn't respect labor unless you specifically refer to it as such.

Annoying, tbh, most of the time. Because it discounts mothers who work and have kids. And if your kid is in school all day, being a stay-at-home mom or dad definitely is not a job.

Yes. But it's optional, and plenty of people can juggle two jobs. No-one's saying it's easy.

I mean, PARENThood is a job.

Not like, a formal job with a contract and a salary, but it's a lot of work.

Re: "Motherhood is a job!"

(Anonymous) 2016-08-08 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
It is. That video which was making the rounds one or two years back which basically said "as a mother you need to be able to do everything, and it's clearly the most extreme, most difficult and most demanding job EVAR nothing else comes close" was pretty ridiculous.

Somewhat both?

Being a (good) parent is a lot of work. But there's lots of other activities that are also a lot of work. We don't lump them all under "job" just because they take effort and time to perform. Cleaning up your deceased relative's house and figuring out what to do with their assets is a lot of work. Owning a pet is a lot of work. Mountain climbing as a hobby is a lot of work.

I've only seen this phrase applied to stay-at-home parents, too, which makes me see it as fairly disingenuous. Doing chores at home I can have the TV on in the background, wear my pajamas, shit in my own bathroom, take a nap if I'm tired, hold off on vacuuming til tomorrow. Not luxuries I think of when I think "job".

Fair point frequently misused/overused to denigrate others. Like practically every other argument about what someone does or doesn't do with their life.

As in it's filled with responsibilities that you need to take seriously and work hard at handling, and you should not accept it if you don't feel you have the qualifications? Because I agree with that.
