Lock the gate! The bad neighbors thread

One of my neighbors didn't shut their gate and it's banging in the wind and making every dog for miles howl. It's been going on for hours (it's just after midnight here) and I want to go through my neighborhood checking every gate until I find the banging one. But I also don't want to get shot or picked up by the police, so I'm just sitting on the sofa seething about it.

So how about you, FS? Any bad neighbor stories?

We used to live in a place that had a rogue bear; and such the housing authority gave us these special trashcans to lock so the bear wouldn't get them.

our next door neighbors were so fucking stupid that they left the thing unlocked half the time and their trash would be all over the neighborhood.

I'd be even madder that they encouraged the bear to come back especially if people had kids or pets

I mean, bears are really cool, but it'sbest for everyone if they stay away from human neighborhoods...

I'm torn between "omg how did you even live there?!?!!?" and "that is so awesome and I wish we had a rogue bear just so I could say rogue bear at the office every day."

But yeah, stupid neighbors :/ I hope they at least picked their trash up after the bear got into it.

Oh god what why. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT. Bears are such bad news! They are like, easily in the top THREE of "animals that I have a chance in hell of encountering and pray to god I never do." The LAST thing you want is to do something that might encourage them to HANG AROUND!

This is less bad and more "me not wanting to bug someone because I'm lazy": my next door neighbors I shared a wall with didn't realize how thin they were (I lived alone, so I didn't make much noise) and one night one woman had a fight with her boyfriend over the phone that just. kept. going. Like, every time she said something like "Okay. Fine. We're over" it would be done but then they'd start in again. I wanted to pound on the wall and scream "JUST BREAK UP ALREADY."

Argh that had to be so awkward! I'd get my hopes up that they were done very time they said they were done and then scream into my pillow when they started back up again.

I used to have a crazy next door neighbor who did the following things:
1. Long screaming arguments late at night on the phone. I don't know what they were about because the only English words were fuck and shit.
2. Played three different radios on three different stations at the same time. One classic rock, one talk and one rap. I have ADD so this drove me nuts.
3. Had a strange looking green light behind one window all the time.
4. Never cleaned up his balcony so it had pigeon shit all over it.

Our douchebag neighbors moved away about five days ago. And left behind an emaciated, flea bitten dog. This dog was so flea bitten it had lost most of its hair. I hope they get evicted from their next house and have to live out of their shitty car.

I don't believe in an afterlife but I hope I'm wrong and there's a special hell for people who abuse and neglect animals.

Do you know what happened to the dog, by any chance? If the answer will make me cry, it's totally cool to lie.

I've had some shitty neighbors (at my old apartment with my fiancé, the upstairs would play music so loud we could hear every word and got super pissed when we asked her to turn it off quite late at night, and the downstairs neighbor liked to complain to the landlady about the "stomping around" we were doing above him--on nights when we hadn't even been home!--and once came up to threaten us and sounded entirely unstable). My biggest problem rn, though, is my neighbor who practices opera--really, really TERRIBLY--at all hours (past 10 last night), and just. Not quietly at all.

Can opera even be quiet? I'm passive aggressive enough that I'd leave a note on their door about quiet hours.

I hated apartment life for living above someone and fearing I was making too much noise and for living under someone who wasn't afraid they were making too much noise. And I hated anyone who lived under me just because they existed and so I felt this giant pressure not to make any sound at all lest I piss them off or worse, keep them up when they were trying to sleep. I'm just not built for living in such close quarters. I'm too stressy as it is. Luckily, I always had nice neighbors and no real problems, just the ones in my head.

Our next door neighbour is a pretty nice woman with a ... complicated family life (read 'crowded, loud and sometimes violent'), who has a tendency to play this one Elvis album on repeat all night long whenever she's had an exceptionally stressful time of things. Which on the one hand I don't begrudge her, if anyone in the world needs a coping mechanism it is this woman, but on the other hand ...

Elvis. All night long. On repeat. It gets ... a bit grating at times. Especially when people need to be up in the morning.

Headphones! My neighbors would all hate me because I listen to my music very loudly and it's the same few songs or even one song over and over and over for days. But I have headphones, so they have no idea.

I don't understand why people like this just won't buy headphones. Then they could listen to their music all night long as loud as they wanted to.

Oh God, you have my sympathy. That sounds unbelievably aggravating.

I had a similar neighbour, only she obsessively played the best hits of Abba. I used to like Abba... *glower*

We have one neighbor who just doesn't care about his property. His grass hasn't been cut in months. Whenever garbage or recycling comes, he leaves his containers out for days (in the street). And often there is trash in the yard as well. Beer bottles and other things.

The neighbors next to us are mostly nice. But there is this gulch thing for water drainage between our properties. We keep our side of it mowed, but they don't. So half of it is really overgrown.

New neighbors last night sat on the porch and started smoking. I can't sit in my house right now because of bugs.

They also leave their ashtray on the ledge. This is a shared front porch.

I'm so excited to be moving soon.

My old neighbour was an a-typical Bad Neighbour. His front and back garden were a mess(complete with a rusted car engine), he always had two dogs that he'd mistreat and it didn't matter how many times we called the RSPCA he still managed to get more, he had a girlfriend who he'd get into shouting matches with every week(they had a kid as well but one day she left and never came back) and god forbid you lost a ball over his fence because you were never getting that back.

He has thankfully been gone for many years now and it's been rented accommodation next door ever since so the families we do get don't stay for a long time. The current lot next door are probably the longest we've had and they're alright, kids are a bit loud sometimes at night but I'll take that over scary dude who abused dogs.

Our neighbors had chickens that made a lot of racket in the mornings. Not bad when the windows are closed but annoying as fuck on a Sunday morning at 6. Thankfully they moved last week! I mean, I get wanting to have chickens for fresh eggs, but man we are in the damn suburbs and if you want chickens you should move to the country.

Our neighbour keeps using his fireplace instead of a regular heater as soon as it gets just slightly colder and he keeps burning things that give off the nastiest smoke. And because we live on a hill and they live in the house below, the smoke always gets in through the windows. And smoke and bad smells are my main migraine triggers.
There has also been an invasion of stinkhorns coming very obviously from his garden. We keep fighting those disgusting things and asked him to do the same but he refuses to do anything.and since he doesn't do anything gets against them, they won't go away no matter how hard we try. And the smell is brutal. And right outside my bedroom window.

I hate that guy.

JFC I am about to lose my mind over these neighbors right now. They have like six kids most of which are really young that are at home alone a good part of the day and spend every single fucking day, from 8am to 10pm, outside in front of my apartment, screaming and running up and down and riding their bikes up and down the slatted walkway and banging on my door or throwing shit against my windows. I have talked to the parents so many times and it's not stopping. I don't know what the fuck happened, because they've lived here longer than me and the last two years this never happened.

My new neighbor(s?) (have lived next door three weeks) have a washer and dryer and ancient, gross, Harvest Gold refrigerator in the yard, just lying there. Way to make the yard look like white-trash heaven. Drives me nuts.
