Re: Question thread

Soooo I had an interview on Tuesday, for an office job at a non-profit. I haven't heard back yet. How long would an organization like that typically take to let you know if you got the job? I assume that at the interview level, I'll at least get a rejection e-mail. I know I should be the mindset of "forget about it and keep applying for other jobs and let it be a happy surprise if you hear back" but I keep obsessing over whether or not I got the job. :-/ I didn't ask for a time estimation at the interview, I thought about it but chickened out.

As unprofessional as it is, I have heard of some places that don't get back to people unless they get the job. I would wait until a week from the interview date maximum and then call/email to follow up with something polite like, "Hi, I was in for an interview for POSITION on DATE, and I was just following up to see if a decision had been reached."

There's nothing wrong with reaching out to an interviewer for an update as long as you're not constantly harassing them.

Good luck! :D

Thanks! I'm probably just going to try to forget about it, and if it happens, it happens. I already sent them a thank-you e-mail, so I guess it's out of my hands.

General advice: wait for a few weeks before you contact them, and don't put aside applying to other jobs. Whether or not you get this job, it can't hurt to have other things on the back burner--applying is not necessarily an automatic commitment, and if you're obsessing about this one particular job having other things in mind might help you let go a little.

Depends on the company, but don't be surprised if it takes weeks or if you never heard back at all. IME, even interviewers who say things like, "You'll hear from us in two weeks" don't necessarily follow up with you at all. That's why the advice is to forget about it and keep applying to other jobs. You'll kill your own chances of getting hired if you wait around and do nothing.

Wait a week or two and then e-mail them to check the status.

Did you send a snail mail thank you note?

I went for an interview with City Mission, and they never got back to me at all. Jerks.

I once applied and briefly interviewed for a retail job. I didn't hear back, so I called them (don't remember how long I waited) and was offered the job on the spot. I think the manager was just too busy to make a decision and I made it for her by showing her I wanted the job.

I'm not saying that's going to happen here, but do follow up politely at some point, just not quite yet.

Meanwhile, keep looking elsewhere. I landed my current job by applying for it while waiting to hear back about another job that I really wanted at the time. I was hired before I ever got word about the first job and I was the one to call them to say I was no longer available. I'm definitely glad I took the job I did. I really love the people I work with, it's exactly what I want to do, and I didn't have to move across the country on short notice.
