Why does nobody tell you that embroidery is hell on your fingers????

Re: Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-08-19 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Because then you won't join us in our addictive hell! MUAHAHAHAHA.

But yeah, I'll cross-stitch while watching TV and like realize after the fact that my fingers are killing me. XD

I don't mean this as a criticism, but I think perhaps there is an issue with your technique. I cross stitch while watching TV, too. It doesn't hurt. It shouldn't hurt. Are you perhaps gripping your needle or fabric too tight, or not taking breaks to stretch your fingers and hands?

i read this as someone outraged that nobody told them it would hurt if they cross-stitched a domestic scene on their fingers

Did the same people not tell you they make thimbles and stuff just for that?

Re: Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-08-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not that - I have a thimble, the left hand is fine. It's the cramping and the rapidly forming callous on my right forefinger from pulling the needle.

So is beadwork! Dammit!

Re: Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-08-19 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
... is it? I cross stitch daily, and I'm fine. No cramping, no calluses, and I don't use a thimble. What kind of materials are you using?

Same. *looks at the three kits sitting beside her on the bed in various states of completion*

I mean, I have some callouses (on the pad of my index finger and thumb), but it's more "the skin is a little tougher" than what people normally think of as callouses.

Soooo I had an interview on Tuesday, for an office job at a non-profit. I haven't heard back yet. How long would an organization like that typically take to let you know if you got the job? I assume that at the interview level, I'll at least get a rejection e-mail. I know I should be the mindset of "forget about it and keep applying for other jobs and let it be a happy surprise if you hear back" but I keep obsessing over whether or not I got the job. :-/ I didn't ask for a time estimation at the interview, I thought about it but chickened out.

Re: Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-08-19 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
As unprofessional as it is, I have heard of some places that don't get back to people unless they get the job. I would wait until a week from the interview date maximum and then call/email to follow up with something polite like, "Hi, I was in for an interview for POSITION on DATE, and I was just following up to see if a decision had been reached."

There's nothing wrong with reaching out to an interviewer for an update as long as you're not constantly harassing them.

Good luck! :D

General advice: wait for a few weeks before you contact them, and don't put aside applying to other jobs. Whether or not you get this job, it can't hurt to have other things on the back burner--applying is not necessarily an automatic commitment, and if you're obsessing about this one particular job having other things in mind might help you let go a little.

Depends on the company, but don't be surprised if it takes weeks or if you never heard back at all. IME, even interviewers who say things like, "You'll hear from us in two weeks" don't necessarily follow up with you at all. That's why the advice is to forget about it and keep applying to other jobs. You'll kill your own chances of getting hired if you wait around and do nothing.

Wait a week or two and then e-mail them to check the status.

Did you send a snail mail thank you note?

I went for an interview with City Mission, and they never got back to me at all. Jerks.

Re: Question thread

I once applied and briefly interviewed for a retail job. I didn't hear back, so I called them (don't remember how long I waited) and was offered the job on the spot. I think the manager was just too busy to make a decision and I made it for her by showing her I wanted the job.

I'm not saying that's going to happen here, but do follow up politely at some point, just not quite yet.

Meanwhile, keep looking elsewhere. I landed my current job by applying for it while waiting to hear back about another job that I really wanted at the time. I was hired before I ever got word about the first job and I was the one to call them to say I was no longer available. I'm definitely glad I took the job I did. I really love the people I work with, it's exactly what I want to do, and I didn't have to move across the country on short notice.

What is the prevalence of circumcision in Puerto Rico? Would a character who's in his late 20s/early 30s [contemporary setting] be cut, or uncut?

Re: Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-08-19 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably uncut, but could be either. Most Hispano-American countries have a low prevalence of circumcision, but it's not unheard-of in PR.

This thread is interesting. There ere a few Boricua posters who said boys were circumised in their families, and a few who said they weren't:

Quick Google search indicates that less than 20% of the men would be circumcised. So, to answer your question, most likely uncut.

Re: Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-08-20 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
This is a question you could Google, surely?

Re: Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-08-20 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's nice that you want to include this level of detail in your fic, but please considering doing some basic research on your own. I promise you, Googling "puerto rico circumcision rate" and looking at the results is much, much faster than posting to the General Comments and waiting for a reply. Also, this is precisely what everyone else will do to answer your question, and it's lazy to expect other people to do your research for you. Especially when it's super duper easy and only takes a minute.

So I started sugaring to remove leg hair recently but I think when I wash the strips when I'm done the sugar mix has clogged/slowed my sink drain... Halp?

Re: Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-08-20 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Can you pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain to dissolve the sugar? You could also try one of those Liquid Plumber drain uncloggers, its a liquid you pour down the drain then wait for 15 minutes to an hour for it to work. They usually cost 8 bucks or so a bottle.

Re: Question thread

(Anonymous) 2016-08-20 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Er, I dunno if sugar on its own would do that, but the hair in the sugar might, so that drain cleaner liquid might work. Or try boiling water and see if that helps, maybe water first to dissolve the sugar and drain cleaner to dissolve the hair--good luck. I just use strips of old sheets or rags to sugar wax and then throw them away because my drains would choke if I washed a bunch of hair down them, but then, my legs are super hairy.
