Souvenirs

What souvenirs do you like to buy for yourself and/or others when you go on a trip?

Postcards, shot glasses, and knick knacks for other people.

I love small knick knacks I can put on my bookshelf. I have a bunch of them.

Postcards only. I write the date on the back and the names of all of my travel companions and then put them into an album when I get home.

I like that. <3

I've never really been a souvenir-buying person but it actually sounds like a nice idea to start. The problem, I guess, is that I mostly associate the concept with chintzy tourist-trap stuff, which I personally happen not to care for, so I'm not sure what kind of souvenirs I'd actually want to buy. Something like postcards just seems so insubstantial. I don't know.

I'm probably not going to be doing any traveling in the near future so it's not like it's an immediate concern or anything, I guess.

What kinds of little knick-knacks do you like in general? It doesn't have to be something you buy at the tourist trap, and it wouldn't necessarily even have to be "branded" with the place you visited. Like, maybe you really like clocks, so whenever you go on a big trip you make a point to find a little shop and look for a clock there. Etc. You could do it with a lot of little things!

I like to buy normal stuff -- books, clothes, jewelry. They're not obviously souvenirs, but they are stuff I'll enjoy and use, and I'll still remember that this came from Canada and that came from Vermont, and so on.

Or I buy wines and ciders. :) Might not even save the corks, honestly, but it's still another little (one-time) reminder I get to have later on.

Keychains or fridge magnets are what I usually buy, I've got one friend who likes really tacky souvenir picture frames so I always get her one if I'm somewhere.

I really don't like hoarding "stuff" and I tend to travel light and not have room for stuff. So souvenirs tend to be shirts - not like "I <3 NYC" shirts, but cuter things I'd actually wear and make more use out of than a shot glass or other standard tourist junk.

If I'm in "older" gods, I do buy touristy statues of gods because my inner-pagan likes having god statues on my mantle. So when I went to Egypt, I got Isis, in Turkey, I got the "Mother" Artemis, in Norway I got Odin, etc. But those are nicer looking things that I actually like to display.

Books with information about the country/place I visited. That way I can flip through the pictures and go 'I remember that, it was neat!'

Edibles, if possible. That way it doesn't clutter up my house or anyone else's.

Well, if you're ever in Hawaii, they make a macadamia nut cookie that's to die for. They have chocolate -dip0ed ones too. I recommend those highly. They're absolutely heavenly with a cup of hot, black Kona coffee.

Snowglobes

I have a snowglobe from every place I've visited along with just a bunch of pretty ones.

Postcards, keychains, and food. Especially food. I used to really like buying posters, but I don't have room on my walls for more posters.

T shirts. I have T shirts from a few different places. They're good basic pieces that look nice with jeans and a cardigan for a casual look, you can use them as cover-ups, night shirts, hair towels, pet bedding, there are lots of uses for them when they wear out. Plus there are always weird random T shirts that say "New Humphreysborough Music Fest '16" or what have you, and I like those.

I buy playing cards for my collection. It doesn't have to be location specific, just something that I like and will use. I have quite a few decks and I've used nearly all of them at some point so they aren't just sitting in a box somewhere, collecting dust.

I have one person in my family who only ever wants shot glasses. Everyone else is more complicated to buy for.

Mostly postcards. I always travel with postcard stamps and will get some cards to send to people (especially a couple of elderly relatives who can't hear well enough to mak phone conversations productive but who love to get mail). I usually buy some for myself, too. I've got a few of them framed and te rest I just like to flip through and remember where I've been.

Beyond that, I only occasionally buy other things, and that tends towards stuff that's useful rather than purely decorative, like T-shirts and other clothing, baskets, pottery, fridge magenets, and other housewares. I also like books about the place I'm visiting. Finally, I'm always on the lookout for art and antique maps, but that's not really for souvenir value.

I usually travel with my address book and stamps because I like sending postcards to people, too. It's relatively inexpensive and mail that isn't a bill is a novelty to a lot of people. :)

I collect teddies/stuffed creatures from travels, so whenever my parents and stuff go somewhere they always bring me something. I got like five different stuffies when they did their 35th anniversary riverboat cruise! :D

I have a massive souvenir spoon collection. I buy my brother shot glasses, but they have to be interesting ones.

I also take a lot of pictures and when I get home, I make a collage to represent that city and frame it.

Edible stuff, gemstone-related and precious metal-related stuff (when I was a little kid I'd get stuff like quartz pendants or bottles of a gemstone or a bottle of whatever gold I can pan for in one of those touristy gold panning places), magnets, books, and shot glasses (which I actually use).

Those flattened penny things.

Re: Souvenirs

I buy postcards, write about the trip, and put them in a scrap book with the attraction brochures and park tickets. I also buy patches to sew on banners and get the pressed souvenir pennies. I collected pens with water and pictures inside that slid around and the plastic mold toys (Mold-a-Rama), when I was a kid. I would collect them still if I could find them.

I buy magnets for Mom and food or other interesting things for the rest of the family.

Well if last year was any example, clothing (like hats and scarves and a leather cuff), jewellery (there was a pāua shell pendant, and my Evenstar), cheap gemstones (I bought a box of pāua shell scraps), books, and toys (a kiwi with a noisemaker inside of it, a replica of Kíli's runestone, dwarven coins, the key to Erebor). I did also grab a bag of table seasoning at the Rotorua gift shop, but that was gone within a couple of months of getting home.

I felt like also noting: Mum is the one who seems to go for the more "touristy" souvenirs - like she likes getting fridge magnets everywhere she goes, or even friends who go places get her magnets. Also postcards, pens, and a copper wire weta from the Weta Cave shop.
