[Criminal Minds]

I feel the same. Hotch is one of my favorite characters ever. It's clear the actor can't come back but there's so much more that the character could do. It will be so different. I love all the characters they have but I'm really uncertain if I'm going to like next season or not. And I really don't think there's any way to write his character out that would feel right.

You sound sensible unlike those nutcases who said Gibson did nothing wrong and was goaded into kicking the writer.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Goaded? Not exactly. Threatened and instinctively reacted yes. Should he have done it? No. But neither should the producer had been screaming and running after him in a threatening manner. TG has apologized. The producer? Nada. He was equally at fault for the situation getting out of control.

You just had to prove AYRT's point, didn't you?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-24 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Hotch isn't my favorite but I agree. I know he had to go, but I feel like Criminal Mind's days are numbered at this rate.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-24 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That's one of the things that's rubbing me the wrong way about the whole thing. People who are reveling in the show's end and saying it's long past time for it to go as if it's a given, regardless of all the fans who are still enjoying it.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-24 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally feel you OP. I stopped watching the show ages ago, when that Emily & JJ clusterfuck happened (I was already getting a bit tired of how half the episodes would be from the point of the unsub after a few seasons). Hotch and Emily were always my favorite characters. I loved their interactions... so even if Emily ever comes back, there won't be a chance for new scenes now (still would probably check out a few eps cause I love her).
I don't know how this show will fare without Hotch. I always thought him and Reid were the ones hardest to replace if they ever had to.
And still... he should absolutely be fired. Just BLAH.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Rumor has it that she's taking over Hotch's position. She'll definitely be in a few episodes this season.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

I hope those rumors prove true. I'd love to see Emily as unit chief :D.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. The cast shake up was so pointless, IMO. It got rid of two great team members and replaced them with one rather bland newbie who's there because... why? It's no fault of the actress and it sucks that fandom was hard on her, but Seaver was boring and her background was ridiculous. That and the change in writing staff was a turning point for me because I felt the show's quality took a significant downturn.

I love Hotch and think losing his character will be terrible, but at the same time I fully understand why TG has to go.

It's Jeremy Clarkson all over again.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Totally understand these feelings, yeah. He was perfect as the team leader, he had great chemistry and interactions with the rest of the cast/characters, I love Hotch himself as a character, and both Gibson and his character have been with the show since day one. It'll be a tough adjustment, to be sure. And knowing why he's not there makes it even harder. At least when Morgan left, it was 'cause Shemar Moore CHOSE to leave, y'know?

I'll still watch 'cause I like and want to support the rest of the cast/characters (and am curious about the new guy). And I agree with letting Gibson go if for no other reason than I think it's important for him to take some time and deal with whatever issues he may be struggling with.

But I'm still sad all of this happened in the first place, and will definitely miss Hotch. Mixed emotions, indeed.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Same. It's part of the reason I hate this whole mess, because I totally agree with what they did, yet a childish/selfish part of me hates it. Another reason is that it's hard to find people who, like you, can see the difference between character and actor. People coming up with consipracy theories because he couldn't possibly be that bad because look how nice and that one Hotch scene was so meaningful...What?

I just hope they find a decent way to write Hotch off the show. Preferably without killing him. No idea how, but then I'm not a team of professional writers. I hope they don't take out their frustration with TG out on Hotch, that they realize we'd like a proper goodbye. And maybe just maaaaaaybe the possibility of a guest appearance in the future, even if it's just a cameo in the series finale.

I'm also sad we'll never get to see the season they had planned. It sounded pretty awesome. It also sounded pretty Hotch-centric, with Mr.Scratch being the big bad this time. So massive and sudden re-writes, that can't be good.

Guess we'll have to wait and see and hope for the best, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding all of this, especially the parts about how this season could've been had Hotch stayed and writing a good exit for him. Course, in some ways, Mr. Scratch's return, as well as the events involving Hotch in last season's finale, could provide for a good setup/reason for Hotch to leave.

I think Jack could be our best chance at not having Hotch get killed off. Despite all the horrible things this show has put these characters through over the years, I just can't really see the show going so far as to make Jack an orphan. Gideon got a decent exit in season 3 even after everything with Patinkin, so...

(Mind, I know how the show handed officially writing off Gideon once and for all in season 10*, but even then, he didn't have a young son like Hotch does-Gideon's son is full grown. And Patinkin had made it abundantly clear he had no desire to come back. Provided/assuming Gibson hasn't burned, or won't totally burn, any bridges with the cast and crew, they could, like you note, find a way to leave the door open just in case they all sort this out and make amends down the line.)

*Honestly, though, even that storyline was still pretty respectful to Gideon and his legacy, both professional and personal. At least, I thought so.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, IA completely.

Mr.Scratch is a good opportunity. I've seen it suggested that Hotch could maybe disappear/be kidnapped and then we could have an arc trying to find him. Of course, then it would have to end either with his death or with TG for a few scenes. But even just another scary moment for Jack like the one in the finale might be a good reason to leave. I just don't know how they're going to manage that one without Hotch himself there.

And yes, I think if they don't kill him off Jack would probably be why. When Shemar Moore left they talked about how they didn't want to do anything too sad because they had killed Gideon the year before. That's still true, and Morgan left, and it would make Jack an orphan.

It probably does depend on what exactly went on behind the scenes. Obviously TG threatening to sue doesn't help, but so far I don't think he's actually done it yet, so who knows. But if the situation's not too bad I'd think they'd want to leave the door open for guest spots. They might not want him around all the time, but he'd bring ratings/viewers/press each time, so that's something they'd have to consider.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
HAS Gibson actually threatened to sue? Keep in mind that retaining lawyers isn't the same thing as actually threatening a lawsuit and that's all I've heard of so far. Regardless of right or wrong, Gibson's getting fired. He needs legal representation to protect his interests and getting a lawyer shouldn't be interpreted as this sinister threat.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't know. There hasn't been any kind of official statement. I think I read something about 'exploring the possibility'. Though that could be conjecture by whatever reporter or even 'source' they had. I think people are inclined to believe it because it was all so sudden and there are all these rumors about the incident that got him fired. Frankly, I usually don't care about celebrity drama, but since this is messing with my show/fandom, I want to know wtf happened.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I don't watch the show but what would those who do think of hiring a different actor to play Hoch?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Just in general I hate the practice of just hiring a different actor to play a character, especially a central character. Its sloppy, imo.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'd hate it. It's one thing if it's a bit part and/or the character was last seen years ago, casual viewers might not even notice then. But this was a major character for 11 years, people would definitely notice.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't like it, either. A new character altogether coming in as the new unit chief is more logical and would be easier for me to work with.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
To me it makes much more sense to recast the character than to scramble to write them out unexpectedly. I don't really get why so many people feel otherwise... To me, the story is central, and the characters and their arcs... The actors' portrayal is a way of communicating the story and characters, and a new actor can do that, albeit probably not as well as the original actor.
