I find it funny that you think shipping has a high enough status that it can be cheapened. And that it isn't just people wanting to see fictional characters make out.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
That's not what it's about for everyone, but I kinda had the same reaction. There's nothing wrong with wanting to find fellow OTPers, but there's usually no shortage of them.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
^ This. What's so sacred and pure about shipping that it's cheapened by the idea of fandom bicycle? Shipping is wanting to see two characters get together/fuck. A fandom bicycle is just a character a lot of people want to see get together/fuck someone else.

As a multishipper myself, I think fandom bicycles are a lot of fun. I'm curious as to what you feel is being cheapened by having one character shipped with many others.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm very confused as to what you mean by the fandom bicycle "phenomenon." There's a phenomenon? How does it cheapen shipping? ?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I just want to say that I love the choice of picture for this secret :D.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe because you are being "one of those fans".

It doesn't cheapen shit. Having more than one ship is not lesser, and having an OTP or single ship isn't better.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
If the concept of shipping were any cheaper, they'd have to pay you to do it.

That would be pretty cool tbh...let's cheapen shipping some more! What next? Bad AUs full of fluff? Overdone tropes? A ship war to end all ship wars?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
How does it cheapen shipping? Why woud it even matter?

Is the concept of shipping really high enough that we need to worry about it being cheapened?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I keep trying to word a response to this, and I keep failing. Possibly because my mind is conflating it a bit with RL discussions on "one true loves" and "loose women" and a few other issues. Putting that aside ... cheapen shipping from what? The multishipping vs OTPing debate has been around for a while, a new term or two doesn't exactly change it all that much. The "concept of shipping" means different things to different people and it has for as long as I've been in fandom. You're on the OTPing side. Good for you. Maybe it depends on the fandom, but I don't think there's much of a shortage of like-minded fans out there?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
My first thought was actually that you're narrow minded and defensive about your ship(s). But yeah, I can see the argument for you hating fun, too.

I can kind of see where you're coming from, if you view shipping as more romantic than just sexual, then having a fandom bicycle means that you're not thinking through romance/relationships between the characters, you're just wanting to see this one get fucked a lot.
I guess my response would be:
a) everybody ships differently, and there's nothing wrong with shipping for hotness

b) if you *do* want a reasoning that might make it feel more romantic for you, I think that fandom bicycles often have a lot of chemistry with the other characters (aside from being hot). I know that with some of my multishipping characters, it's because I like different dynamics in each situation, or I just don't see any single character in their show being The One for them. So I vacillate.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
That's interesting. I'm usually a multishipper in most of my fandoms, and shipping is almost purely romantic rather than sexual for me. Or, well. A variety of relationships, with some of them 'romantic' is maybe pushing it, but it's usually about the connection rather than the sex for me even with my complicated/hate/rival ships as well. My fandom bicycles are characters I see as having intense connections with several other characters, any of which I could see being built into a relationship of some kind.

This is how I think the secret maker meant it, too. And I can get where they're coming from with that mindset to some degree. Personally speaking, while I do love to multi-ship, I like to ship characters that I can see having a deep, long-term relationship. There's something special and unique about each pairing I like that I want to capture/see captured in stories about each of those pairings.

That said, however, I'm also completely with you in agreeing that there's nothing wrong with people wanting to ship two characters for hotness' sake, or other reasons of that sort.

And if the secret maker DID mean to imply that by simply multi-shipping in and of itself, fans are cheapening the concept of shipping or things of that sort, then I definitely disagree with them on that.

Yeah.... I have characters that are almost bicycles to me because I think they're interesting to imagine being in love with a lot of different people. Maybe the hotness is a bonus, but not in all cases. And I think people like OP underestimate just how ridiculously sentimental someone like me can be about one pairing while I'm in the mindset of reading or writing it to the point that ATM, in that universe, it's my OTP.

Do you think it cheapens the value of it for other people? Because if so, that's very presumptive and a bad reason to judge people for their shipping habits. (Not that there is an abundance of good reasons, mind.)

It's ok if it cheapens it for you, and you don't have to multiship or have bicycles. But people ship and enjoy shipping in different ways, and that's okay.

I don't have many fandom bicycles but the ones I do are so because I find the chemistry that they have with multiple characters extremely appealing and I basically just can't choose which option I prefer(so I pick all of them!).

But we've all got our own ways of doing fandom and there's no one right way.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so with you there, OP. I feel like it really devalues characters myself.

That's a great picture!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Being a fandom bicycle just means one character is compatible with a lot of other characters. I don't get why that would bother anyone.
A fandom bicycle can be a memetic sex god, but not all memetic sex gods are fandom bicycles.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
You don't get it, OP. I am in OTP true love with the fandom bicycle. There is nothing cheap about my relationship with them. I love them so VERY much I want them to have all the love and sex in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD.

Get it?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-26 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Wrong. Not "apparently".
