My dad was watching Casablanca tonight, and somewhat out of nowhere he turns and we have this slightly odd conversation:

Dad: "So, which would you pick, Rick Blaine or Victor Lazlo?"
Me, mostly on autopilot: "Louis."
Dad: "... You like sleazy coercive rapists?" (Which, fair, but)
Me, with maybe an air of revelation: "No, I like small, neat men with lovely voices."

So basically tonight resulted in my realising semi-accidentally that my ideal man is Claude Rains, and also my dad staring at me in bemusement for several seconds before shrugging and going basically 'okay then, whatever turns you on'.

(For the record, he'd pick Rick Blaine, mostly because Humphrey Bogart, so I'd say we're fairly even there).

How's everyone else's Friday night going?

Well, my Friday started off pretty poorly. I was having terrible cramps so my sister offered my some Midol. I've never had Midol before and I didn't know much about it. I decided to take it right before bed. After laying in bed for two hours and having to get up every 20 minutes to pee, I hopped on my phone to figure out what was going on.

Apparently two Midol have the equivalent amount of caffeine as 1 1/2 cups of coffee. For people who drink a lot of caffeine, that'd probably not bother them. For someone like me, who has not drank a caffeinated beverage in about 5 years...I was up until 3am. I hopped out of bed at 6am still a bit wired.

I crashed around two today. :/

Ouch. That'll do a number on your sleeping patterns. Strong pain relief tends to knock me out regardless of caffeine content, but then I have been drinking tea and/or coffee since my teens.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You really do have to read the labels of period pain relievers because so many of them have caffeine in them! I think maybe one or two don't, but I mean you really have to read the fine print. It sucks.

What about Ugarte, huh?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter Lorre tends to get more of a 'scoop him up and keep him safe' response from me, usually.

I went to the mall to buy sneakers and pajamas. Worked on some Spanish. Other than that, just waiting for dinner so I can then go to bed. I'm really tired. Really, really tired. Oh, got my flu shot, which is probably making me more tired than I would otherwise be.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Could be the shot, yeah. Mind you, I tend to spend all week thinking to myself "It's okay, you get to sleep in on Saturday, just hang on that long", so.

I'm sitting around watching old game shows debating if I should do work tonight or put it off until tomorrow.

I always vote for procrastination on weekends, but that's possibly not a helpful answer.

I've finished binge watching DuckTales, so now I'm starting Darkwing Duck.

I never had right channels to watch any of the Disney Afternoon as a kid, so these are all new to me. I'm liking it a lot, though! Weird family bonds are my fav, especially people learning how to be a family (see too: Leverage), so I'm over the moon.

OMG I loved DuckTales as a kid. Is it on Netflix?

Darkwing Duck is so strange to watch nowadays. It uses more complicated language and ideas than most modern stuff for kids, but the messages are so simple and the emotional arcs so much less impactful.

Aw, man, Disney Afternoon was my jam. See if you can squeeze Gargoyles in there! Tons of weird but fiercely loyal family bonds in there.

Oh, man. If you haven't seen it (and can find it), I highly recommend Super DuckTales, an episode from Disney's Wonderful World of Color/Disney, that introduces Fenton Crackshell, the Scrooge accountant who inadvertently becomes the superhero Gizmo-Duck. Of course, I haven't seen it since I was a kid, but I remember it being great.

All I could find quickly though was this intro with Michael Eisner being a big dork. And yet, I really miss the days when, well, Disney's Magical World of... was a thing, first of all, and also Eisner's intros and act-break bits in them.

Rewatching Basilisk I've realized once again that "sleazy coercive rapist" is totally my type in fiction. Tenzen-sama!

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Not mine usually. I probably should have figured out soon that I was making an exception for Claude Rains.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
ooh, Claude Rains - a tiny recommendation, Phantom of the Opera (1943). He plays the titular role (and it's one of my favorite versions). That version also has a different ending to the Phantom/Raoul/Christine triangle (or in this case square because there's a third male involved - but the Phantom angle is played differently due to spoilers)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, okay! Thank you, I'll try that next.

(I'm watching The Wolf Man at the minute, which is causing a couple of odd moments because 5'6" Claude Rains as the dad and 6'2" Lon Chaney Jr as the kid, though apparently Lon Chaney Sr was only 5'7"-ish as well. It just looks a bit odd.)

Spent a couple hours running errands and spent most of it just furious. Shopping during the day is such a nightmare.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I never understood the appeal of shopping in general, though I generally do prefer daylight.

I love Louis but he can't be my ideal man because he reminds me of my dad since my dad likes to quote him. I'd go with Rick since I'm with your dad on Humphrey Bogart, not that I don't also like Claude Rains.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor Lazlo, he really is neglected.

It took me a while to get the appeal with Bogie, actually, and that was more from The Big Sleep than Casablanca. Mind you, it possible that he just couldn't compete in a movie with Claude Rains in it ;)

For what it's worth, I'd personally choose Bogart. I always hated that her let Bergman leave without being by her side.

Finally saw Suicide Squad.

Well, let me put it this way; I saw it legit in theaters and not just a shitty cam.
