What book would you like to see made into a movie?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-04 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Or a TV series?

--Montmaray Journals as a BBC or ITV 3-season series
--Special Topics in Calamity Physics as a miniseries
--A much better version of the Prydain Chronicles as a movie
--Someone on tumblr suggested a vast HBO series for the Dalemark Quartet and I'm INTO IT
--CW adaptation of the Raven Boys

Now I haven't read the book and may be misremembering but I feel like this is happening.

I'd love the BBC (or anyone) to make Georgette Heyer's romance novels into lavish, lovely costume dramas. There's been a lack of good period romances lately. I can only rewatch P&P and North & South so many times...

I dunno about the lack of period dramas. There was Versailles, and the new Victoria series. Both of those were great.

The Grand Sophy is the one that immediately comes to mind for adaptation, but I'd also really like to see The Reluctant Widow, The Convenient Marriage, or Cotillion and I'd love to see what they would do with The Masqueraders. Austen and Bronte are fine, but they have done so many adaptions already and I think Georgette Heyer's works would adapt pretty well, plus, given the descriptions, I bet the costume designers would love to take a crack at them.

I don't know, some classic fantasy novel made into a Robin of Sherwood style tv show. Something that hits the middle ground between grimdark and rapesex, and the all out camp teenybopper Shannara stuff.

Or maybe if they are sticking to the camp as anything, a movie based on the Magic Kingdom For Sale (Sold) book. Just not shot in New Zealand, keep it Vancouver.

I'd like to see some Robert Cormier books adapted into good movies. I think there is place for some dark YA movies that are not about overthrowing some horrible regime.

I'd also love to see Briar Rose by Jane Yolen. I always thought that was such a lovely book.

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin

I think it's about time. Unfortunately it's been in development hell for 12 years now.

Any book with some oldfashioned gernsbackian SF is okay with me.

Said it before and I'll say it again, make Little, Big as a 12 episode prestige drama

Blood Meridian.

I thought for sure that with the critical and commercial successes of There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, and The Revenant we'd be getting one for sure, but nooooooooooo.

Has Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett been filmed? If not, that'd be my choice.

If they can strip the colonialisms out of it, then I'd love to see Arthur C Clarke's YA work "Dolphin Island".

Tropical South Pacific island scenery, intercontinental hovercraft, dolphins, killer whales, actual GPS and internet even though it was written in the 1960s. A male teenage lead with a poor homelife, but who does NOT get wangtsy and grimdark over it, but instead becomes pretty smart and happy.

In my opinion, Harry Potter would make a better TV series than it did movies.

Every book could be a season. The seasons could be extended with new material - there is a wealth of potential with the character's backstories, interpersonal relationships, and worldbuilding. All of the subtleties and plot points, lost in a movie, could be explored.

They could add more backstory to the Maraunders, expand on background characters, etc. I would kill for this. I would kill again if JK Rowling would help write it.

I would like to see a few of my favorite fanfics turn into movies. Or...um...pornos, I guess you'd call them.

I feel like David Edding's Belgariad/Mallorean and Elenium/Tamuli series' would make for great TV series', but I have no faith that they'd be done well.

They're old series, with definitely outdated ideas, among other things, and anyone who tried to adapt them would almost certainly have to modernize them, which I'm not a fan of in general. (I prefer to take things as they were originally created and talk about the flaws they hold rather than erase them. Erasing flaws always seems so creepy to me.)

So I don't think I'd like how they adapt them, but there's still a part of me that would love to see Garion's quest on screen or Sparhawk's journey to save his queen.

Oh yeah one more: a good, high budget, well-acted tv series of the Arthurian legends (think HBO). Sorry BBC, Merlin was shit. The Mists of Avalon also wasted so much potential. Something bleak yet awe-inspiring and atmospheric with good costume design, not chain links over leather and dirty faces. Like Dark Souls with chivalry.

The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, maybe as an online streaming mini series or something.

A better adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand (extended edition, pls). I liked the mini series except...Molly Ringwald was not Fran. Not even fucking close.... I'd rather it be a tv series--limited to the events of the book, of course.

And in the same family, Joe Hill's The Fireman--again, I think a one or two (short) tv season series would serve it well. Or at least a mini series. The special effects for the Dragon scale would be cool.

The Flight of the Heron. Wonderful Scottish scenery (and I'm not just talking about whoever plays Ewen Cameron.) Redcoats! Conflicts of duty and friendship! h/c by the shedload!

It might actually happen because the book comes out of copyright in 2020.

Temeraire - because, c'mon! Dragons are IN!
[probably as a mini-series, because I think that's a good way of adapting books generally]

Terry Pratchett's Nation as a one-season show. I just really like Nation, okay? I wish people talked about it more.

I would love to see Stacey Kade's The Ghost and the Goth trilogy on the big screen. Hell, I'd settle for the book series being more popular, even.

Otherwise, just many of the YA books I've read & loved. Most recently, Kill the Boy Band. A film adaptation could really be the coming generation's Mean Girls/Jawbreaker/Heathers/etc.
