Cleaning & Organising thread

[personal profile] belladonna_took 2016-09-11 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
What jobs do you really need to get around to doing at your place? How are the ones you've started going?

I am midway through a ruthless spring cleaning and wardrobe culling spree. The time for "maybe" piles has ended.
I am using this flow chart and it is mostly working. Some things with cute fabric have somehow migrated into my sewing project bag. Struggling a bit with pacing myself so I don't overdo it and give up.

I really really really need to repaint my guest bathroom/Monstrous Bebe's bathroom. She's got hair dye all over it over the years, and the vanity is a mess. But I want to *replace* the vanity and I don't actually have the money.

Good on you and your spring cleaning! I always feel so much more grounded when my house is uncluttery and clean.

You might be able to find a factory second or one on gumtree that has been left over from a renovation project? That's where my friend found hers and it ended up being $40 brand new because it was too wide or something. Installing it is a pain though.

I don't think anywhere I've lived has ever been 100% decluttered except when I didn't own anything. I like the feeling of my mess being hidden away and the place looking like clean people live here though. My bathroom is so sparkly.

I'll have to look into that. I'm not 100 percent sure I could install on my own, but you never know!

I...rather like getting rid of junk that has no value to me or use. It feels good, to me, to know i'm not just holding on to stuff that's basically useless when someone else could really use it (or love it).

I had help. It's handy having friends who are in trades. Even if they're busy or you don't want to ask them, they can still tell you when someone else is ripping you off.

I think that is the attitude I would like to have. I'm trying. I have some guilt about donating so many things that were gifts and I keep thinking what if someone realises I got rid of something they gave me.

My mom got a stove in a similar fashion. My folks are renovating a house they bought to move into, which is a project she's always wanted to do, and she can't afford like super high-end appliances. But she was stove shopping and the store had a Viking range that they'd ordered in the wrong color for a different customer and now it was sitting their taking up inventory space so they sold it to her at a discount. She got it for the price she'd have paid for a brand she was actually considering buying! (And she loves the color.)

I love finding cheaper things at just the right time! That sounds like a good find.

I got my desk just when they were going to send them back because the legs weren't the standard height. It's the perfect height desk for me. I don't need to put the chair height up and sit with my legs dangling just to write at it.

Definitely ask around randomly too, just tell your friends/family you're looking for something and you never know who might have something hidden around that they bought and don't want. I have two stores about that.

My friend Kate was renting a house and was promised laundry, but that meant they only included the hookup, not the actual washer/dryer. Her dad had a spare washer at home, but she figured she'd just go to Sears outlet or something and buy a cheap dryer, since she only needed it for a year, she was guaranteed to move in a year. Well she happened to mention it in front of my parents, who had been given a dryer and it was just sitting useless in my dad's storage trailer. So we gave it to her because we weren't going to use it.

My friend Jeremie bought a house but they needed to completely gut the house and replace everything. Well years and years ago, his parents planned on redoing their kitchen and stored the cabinets in my dad's storage trailer. As they had never gotten around to redoing the kitchen, they decided to gift him with the cabinets.

I really need to get on organizing the big bonus room upstairs and finishing packing the boxes I have so I can get the last of them that Mom and Dad still have.

I'm planning on turning it into a little art studio room. I still need to get a surface to replace my desk so I can set up my own desktop comp. I also need to clear some space for a drafting desk I want to get and fold the futon back up now that I'm sleeping in the old guest bedrooms. I should get the measurements of the space between the minifridge and the dresser.

And of course there's STILL the curtains to put on the window.

This room is a real fixer-upper. But having a studio of my own is enough motivation to get it done.

That's exciting!

I keep measurements on a note in my phone when I'm looking for something to fill a space. That way if I find something I have them with me. I also used to carry a tape measure in my handbag when I shopped just in case.

I spent all of Labor Day cleaning and reorganizing. It was so nice. So things and pretty okay for once. All my gym clothes are on the floor of the bathroom, but I'm gonna do laundry tomorrow, so...

Success! :)

Ooh. Yeah. I am not on top of my laundry yet. All my summer stuff has a musty back-of-wardrobe smell I'm not in love with.

I'm in the process of moving and it's been a struggle trying to stay on top of being organized while unpacking at the same time.

I feel like packing is easier than unpacking in some ways. You know everything goes in boxes. Unpacking in a new place is a mess because you don't know where everything is going to go yet.

Good luck sorting it out!

Re: Cleaning & Organising thread

I'm moving from my parents' house to my own place so I've been in no rush to move anything non-essential out. Which means I'm literally between two places. It helps that I'm still very close to my parents, I have to drive past their house in order to get to mine, but it also means I'm not in a rush so I'm moving slowly and trying to make things work as I try to organize my place and make it my own.

Packing was definitely easier because half of my stuff was already in boxes. It's the matter of figuring out where to put things, like a kitchen! You unpack it all but then you realize to be functional you need to shift things around, so that's a bit frustrating.

Kinda everything???? Move date is one week from today! New roommates/landlords finally got the closet cleaned out in my room so actually in a few minutes I'm going over there to start putting stuff away. (It's 75% moved over but stacked up on the floor)

I'm so excited to start fresh in a new place and get things organized!

I'm still unpacking from my move and have just two boxes left. The problem is that I've run out of places to put those things and I need to find some sort of shelving system.

You sew, you say?

In my experience, you're basically fucked in the cleaning out department, then.

SHHHHHHHHH !

Let me live in hope and ignorance, anon.
I have a big bag that will fit in a storage space and I am limiting myself to that much fabric at a time. I have a system.

The system will not fail.
Even when I get sale catalogues from Spotlight and I have a VIP card and they have some really nice everything...

Today I went through a plastic tub and a garbage bag of winter clothes. I'm keeping less than half of it. I'll drop the rejects off at the thrift shop on my way to work sometime this week.

One of the things I'm trying to do to control my yarn/fabric addiction is write down the projects I finish, and each two "finished" rows has a row to start a new project beside it. Theoretically, that should get me down to a reasonable number of projects eventually...

That's a good idea. I would steal it, but it would probably only work if I finished anything in the first place.
