[The Hobbit (film)]

To be honest, I thought it was kind of dumb, too. Nothing against Cumberbatch, but he lacks Andy Serkis' physicality for motion capture and IMO, Smaug wasn't brought to life the same way Gollum was.

ilu OP

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree. I found it much more entertaining than the film.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, this shade!

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was to help the dragon's facial movements (not just lipsynching; how his eyes wrinkle when he grins for example) match what Cumbayayahitch was saying

but yeah, they spent waaaaayyy too much money and time on it, even if the end product was pretty nice looking

Motion capture can be an overindulgence of movie budget IMO. Gollem was a game changer, but then Avatar was supposed to use it amazingly and then all that immense amount of work put into the choreography and the physicality didn't make the motions look natural because the characters were built so differently from human beings, it seemed like their center of gravity was nonexistent. Facial movements make sense but everything else is like...something the actor might have fun with but now that the novelty's worn off it seems like just anyone can do it.

I was going to say "works well for planet of the apes" but apes are a lot closer to humans than......dragons are so, fair enough

I always thought the same. I imagine it was a publicity thing ("and Bariatric Colonialism as THE DRAGON!").

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
bariatric colonialism...,,,, too real

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems like it would actually be easier to map various points to an actors face and body with various corresponding points on the dragon's face and body than to try to rig the entire thing on your own, step by step. And it would look more realistic too since you're not having to make as much shit up, they're actual movements. Due to phylogenic similarities between species, movements from a human can be inferred to different species without breaking plausibility.

Fantastic reason as to why they likely did it.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-12 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Then again, Lizards do not talk like humans does.

Not the lizards YOU know, maybe...

I always felt that was just...not done right. I would have thought that if you were going to motion-capture a person for something built like a dragon, you should help the actor place their weight properly and move a bit more accurately by like...having arm/leg extensions, or at least something approximating wings and tail because having those sticking out from your body really changes how you move.

I liked the animation of Smaug in the film but seeing the mo-cap stuff makes me laugh a bit because it looks so goofy.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
The way I understood it when they first hired BC they didn't even want him to do any motion capture because like everyone else they felt it was a stupid idea to do any considering it was a freaking dragon. But apparently BC insisted/begged them to let him try as he was so excited at the idea of it. I always thought they did it to indulge him and because it would make a funny feature on the DVD, not because they'd actually get something out of it.

This is just what I remember hearing of course, I'm only at the edges of the fandom when Sherlock isn't actually on. But it was a running joke that every interview BC did where Smaug was mentioned he'd always be ridiculously quick to point out he did the motion capture too. So much so that fans started saying it for/with him at cons and the like.

I'm guessing he wanted that street cred of being a hardcore actor's actor. I don't think it really worked, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
there are very few instances where i think motion capture works

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
if you think about it, it kinda works in this case, because bourgeoisie crumplesack actually looks like a lizard

This comment might have had a point in 2014.

He looks like a well-bred alien, thank you very much.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I work in the animation industry, I don't work with motion capture but everyone who talks about working with it generally says that the stuff you get from the capture is usually garbage. It takes a hell of a lot of tweaking and cleaning up from an animator to get it looking any good, so I don't doubt that they did watch some lizards on top of whatever came of Bendytoots' performance.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
So what's the draw? Is it just that motion capture is cool?
