Sad to break it to you, but the people were always the same. Even before so-called special snowflakes trying to differentiate themselves by gender identity or victim status, it was a fight between the outcasts to be the most self-harming or most emo or most goth or the greatest master of some obscure geeky knowledge or whatever.

The labels change but people stay the same.

I dunno...as someone who self-harmed this comment irks me. I'm not saying no-one in the history of humanity ever did bit for attention, but the equal it to special snowflakeness sort of sucks. Because there are reasons people do that that have nothing to do with being cool on tumnblr.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

I super agree. But I think the same is also probably true of the people we like to bitch about on Tumblr, to a large extent.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
da

Not everyone who self-harms does it for attention. In fact, I'd bet money that the majority of people who self-harm do not do it for attention, and in fact frequently hide it.

But there was a period in which it was a trend in certain circles to talk loudly about your SI, post pictures and swap techniques, and essentially make it a really uncomfortably performative thing. If you happened to miss that phase, I envy you.

I've seen some of it, and I still believe that even in that group the majority had genuine issues.

Fandom!secrets tradition requires me to point out: the fact that someone is self-harming "for attention" does not mean they're not in pain, and it doesn't mean they don't need help.

AYRT

I should have put quotes around "self-harming" because I didn't mean people who really self-harmed, but I disagree with you here. Lots of people would pretend to for attention. Tons and tons and tons and tooons of those during the "emo" 90s, especially in band fandoms.

Lots of teens pretend to drink and do drugs or be in gangs for attention while not actually doing any of this; this doesn't make teen drug use or drinking or gangs not a problem. The people pretending and the people actually doing are separate issues.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
the literal same goes for transgender people too

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The literal same goes for a lot of issues. Saying there were in existence people who pretended, is not saying the issue itself isn't real. Confused teenagers with convoluted gender identities are real. Actual trans people are real too. One doesn't negate the other.

I don't know why people keep taking it that way.

Well, yeah, and I tend to give those the benefit of the doubt mostly...

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Back in the day nobody tried to make themselves seem special at all. It was just understood that we were weird and we didn't fit in with the normal kids and finally we were among our own kind who enjoyed the geeky entertainment.

It's true that people competed to try to be the super-fan of the world by knowing ever more obscure trivia but it wasn't a personal statement of who they were.

But nowadays it's sometimes more like group therapy that happens to also like a certain TV show.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Unscrew those nostalgia goggles a few notches. There have always been people in fandom who've tried desperately to be the bestest and most specialest ever. The only difference back in the day is that the typical fan discussion formats were more compartmentalized than things like Tumblr, where pretty much everything is out in the open.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to mention that back then the level of social media and access to said media was nothing compared to what exists now, so you just plain didn't hear about the drama like you do these days.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, the bestest. But not the specialist in terms of personality traits. The bestest *fan*. Who'd met the stars the most. Who owned it on vinyl. Who was fluent in the language. That sort of thing. Not how damaged and weird they were.

But even if you're right, that's kind of the point. You could be on a bulletin board and never encounter this kind of thing if it was relegated to off-topic folders. On Tumblr there's virtually no escape.

This is complete, complete bullshit. Totally unrealistic nostalgia.

It may have been how you felt back then, but it's not by any means an accurate portrayal.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
10 years ago mental illness weren't the new hotness and you didn't have tons of kids self diagnosing themselves with at least 5 mental illness. I don't give a shit about people identifying as trees or whatever bullshit they come up with, but this mental illness fad bothers the fuck out of me.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
You did too fucking have that 10 years ago.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-15 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
yep. i remember it.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-16 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Stop trying to pretend that it was as bad as it is nowadays. Having some weirdos is a thing, the current situation is much much worse.

This. There are people who legit have mental illnesses. And then there's assholes on Tumblr who WISH they had mental illnesses and pretend that they do. Which is fucking disgusting, and sets things back far more than it moves them forward. Appropriating mental illnesses is Tumblr's favorite pastime.

so you didn't run into the kids who told you they hear voices and tried to convince you to talk to their multiple personalities? And they would go "lol i'm such a psycho".

(Anonymous) 2016-09-16 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. The problem with Tumblr is that it's full of self-diagnosed dipshits and otherkin; this probably wouldn't be too bad alone but they often want to make people with genuine problems believe specialists want to harm them and that they should trust their ilness instead. This is fucking bullshit, and yet a lot of folks with actual mental disorders (usually the 'tism and such, but also bipolar and schizphrenia) on that site buy into this. Nobody should "trust" their mental ilness, it's a parasite gnawing on me and taking my joy away, not a ~~quirky friend making me unique~~.
