Pretty much anything. The current system of neo-liberal capitalism seems incredibly fucked up and unnatural to me.

Like the whole system where we put kids in the care of someone else because the parents/grandparents are out working. Or that we put old people in retirement homes. It seems nuts.

Also the whole concept of bullshit jobs - i.e. jobs that contribute nothing to society than to keep the own company running...but have no no inherent values like say teching, food production, healthcare etc.

Every thing that has to do with adverting just baffles me (and more so since I don't have a TV).

Starbucks and it's clones, i.e. incredibly overpriced drinkstthat are popular by virtue of name.

etc etc

I needed to help my dad with wound care for a while. That was temporary, thank god, and I didn't have to hold down a job at the same time. If I did have to hold down a job, and if it wasn't temporary, I'd have lost my fucking mind. So retirement homes make a LOT of sense to me.

But, that's sort of my point? It seems totally twisted to me we live in a society that prioritizes "holding down a job" over taking care of your own father.

And obviously, that that care would just be on you, that's also a problem.

Seconding all of this. I love capitalism like a fat kid loves cake, but I have to admit that it has given rise to a lot fake-work jobs that contribute nothing to the organization, society, or even the individual.

Oh, and high-five for not having a tv. Not getting one of those devil machines was one of my better life choices.

And Starbucks coffee is not even that great.

I actually do have a physical TV, and I can stream the bf's Netflix or watch DVD's - but, it's honestly weird if you don't see reality shows, talk shows, commercials etc. for YEARS, it looks completely insane when you do see it.

Fake jobs are a terrible, depressing thing and might get worse still with more automatisation.

(And I never got Starbucks, but I don't like coffee. Their hot cocoa is meh)

I haven't had a TV for years, either, and when I do see commercials and stuff it's pretty wild. They're so... flickery. And so annoying. I don't know why people put up with it. I also don't get that thing where people just turn on the TV and LEAVE IT ON in the background, what the hell.

And another person agreeing on the fake jobs, here. Then again, society in general is struggling with transitioning to a time of plenty. We honestly don't need to be working nearly as much as we do, but people are so married to the idea of "you must work!!!" that they manufacture work for it. The whole thing is messed up. We could all be getting free - or almost free - produce, especially given how much produce is thrown away... and don't get me started on the produce that's trashed for not being "pretty" enough.

My bf's family do that - it'so so annoying.

And yeah, don't get me started on food waste. It makes me actively angry.

Respectfully, have you had to deal with older folks with severe illnesses?

My granddad had Alzheimers, and a retirement home with it's multitude of staff was the only way to take care of him. My grandmother couldn't have done it alone, nor even with my mom helping.

Plus, some retirement homes are actually really nice, and give the people a chance to be among others from the same era, so they have shared knowledge/history, which can be nice, because it gives them people to talk to who know what they're going through.

I have, actually.

And, I'm not saying there should not be (external) care if needed, but segregating them into old people communes seems really weird to me. I'm pretty sure that if I ever get to be old, I wouldn't want to be surrounded by old people.

nayrt but my grandma is in a home, because she is literally at constant risk of falling and breaking bones, or dying. She is not mentally capable enough to take care of herself, and we work, we don't have the time - or, for that matter, a house safe enough for her to be in (just to get inside you have to walk up stairs). I don't think you should judge the idea of putting the elderly in homes where they can be cared for by people whose job it is to care for them. I mean, we shouldn't shut up our old folks and abandon them, obviously - we see our grandma several times a week - but a nursing home is absolutely the perfect place for her to be.

I don't think I'd call it segregation, per se. The kind of homes that provide the level of medical assistance necessary are naturally going to be full of older people because surprise, that's when a lot of peoples' ability to care for themselves diminishes. What alternative would you suggest for people whose families are unable to provide the same level of 24/7 monitoring plus healthcare?

Retirement communities exist because older people with money often voluntarily wish to live in a neighborhood designed especially for them and they don't necessarily want to live near noisy families and younger people. Some of them have strict rules and minimum age limits to enforce that and again-- people CHOOSE to live there, they're not being sent there like it's a work camp.

I think the concept of "bullshit jobs" is a little bit bullshit. I don't think people - usually young, social-liberal types who don't actually understand how organizations work - have a concept of why certain jobs are necessary. You can argue against big companies, if you want, but trust me, if you are not economically useful to a company you will not have a job. And you undoubtedly benefit greatly from big companies - that is where you're getting your technology, your luxuries, not mom-and-pop shops. So if someone has a job that is to analyze data about marketing in a certain area, their work supports a company that many people choose to throw their money. Who are you to say there's no inherent value to that? Not everyone has an artisan job, that doesn't mean they aren't contributing to their product/service in a useful way.

Women used to be the primary caregivers for both children and the elderly. Tax-funded welfare freed women from the crippling responsibilities of caring for their families and allowed them to join the workforce.

If you remove daycares and old people's homes, you can say goodbye to women's lib.
